RESUMO

Extracellular vesicles (EVs) are defined as subcellular structures limited by a bilayer lipid membrane that function as important intercellular communication by transporting active biomolecules, such as proteins, amino acids, metabolites, and nucleic acids, including long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs). These cargos can effectively be delivered to target cells and induce a highly variable response. LncRNAs are functional RNAs composed of at least 200 nucleotides that do not code for proteins. Nowadays, lncRNAs and circRNAs are known to play crucial roles in many biological processes, including a plethora of diseases including cancer. Growing evidence shows an active presence of lnc- and circRNAs in EVs, generating downstream responses that ultimately affect cancer progression by many mechanisms, including angiogenesis. Moreover, many studies have revealed that some tumor cells promote angiogenesis by secreting EVs, which endothelial cells can take up to induce new vessel formation. In this review, we aim to summarize the bioactive roles of EVs with lnc- and circRNAs as cargo and their effect on cancer angiogenesis. Also, we discuss future clinical strategies for cancer treatment based on current knowledge of circ- and lncRNA-EVs.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To identify the teaching-learning process characteristics of Oral Pathology and Medicine (OP&M) related to oral potentially malignant disorders (OPMDs) and oral cancer (OC), in the dental schools' curricula in Mexico, to analyze the approach given to this topic worldwide, and to provide the possible solution strategies. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Questionnaires were sent to OP&M deans and professors from public Mexican Universities to explore the curriculum and academic profile of the dental schools. The recommendations gathered from a workshop with expert professors on the challenges in OPMD/OC teaching were reported. RESULTS: Twenty-two dental schools participated (22 deans, 30 professors). The most widely used strategies were clinical-case resolving (86%) and presentations (73%). Although 77.3% of the programs included maxillofacial lesions, only 40.9% contemplated OPMD/OC. Only 45% of the programs developed community activities for early OC detection. The workshop recommendations were (i) multidisciplinary approach to OPMD/OC teaching, involving OP&M professors in other dental and nondental courses; (ii) implementation of the most effective teaching techniques (currently, problem-based learning and clinical-case presentation) in OP&M curricula; (iii) education of OP&M professors on teaching-learning processes. CONCLUSIONS: These recommendations from the Mexican context, integrated with similar experiences from other countries could contribute to develop a unique, internationally acknowledged OP&M curriculum.

RESUMO

Cancer is responsible for more than 10 million deaths every year. Metastasis and drug resistance lead to a poor survival rate and are a major therapeutic challenge. Substantial evidence demonstrates that an increasing number of long non-coding RNAs are dysregulated in cancer, including the long intergenic non-coding RNA, regulator of reprogramming (linc-ROR), which mostly exerts its role as an onco-lncRNA acting as a competing endogenous RNA that sequesters micro RNAs. Although the properties of linc-ROR in relation to some cancers have been reviewed in the past, active research appends evidence constantly to a better comprehension of the role of linc-ROR in different stages of cancer. Moreover, the molecular details and some recent papers have been omitted or partially reported, thus the importance of this review aimed to contribute to the up-to-date understanding of linc-ROR and its implication in cancer tumorigenesis, progression, metastasis, and chemoresistance. As the involvement of linc-ROR in cancer is elucidated, an improvement in diagnostic and prognostic tools could promote and advance in targeted and specific therapies in precision oncology.

RESUMO

Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) originates in the squamous cell lining the mucosal surfaces of the head and neck region, including the oral cavity, nasopharynx, tonsils, oropharynx, larynx, and hypopharynx. The heterogeneity, anatomical, and functional characteristics of the patient make the HNSCC a complex and difficult-to-treat disease, leading to a poor survival rate and a decreased quality of life due to the loss of important physiologic functions and aggressive surgical injury. Alteration of driver-oncogenic and tumor-suppressing lncRNAs has recently been recently in HNSCC to obtain possible biomarkers for diagnostic, prognostic, and therapeutic approaches. This review provides current knowledge about the implication of lncRNAs in drug resistance mechanisms in HNSCC. Chemotherapy resistance is a major therapeutic challenge in HNSCC in which lncRNAs are implicated. Lately, it has been shown that lncRNAs involved in autophagy induced by chemotherapy and epithelial-mesenchymal transition (EMT) can act as mechanisms of resistance to anticancer drugs. Conversely, lncRNAs involved in mesenchymal-epithelial transition (MET) are related to chemosensitivity and inhibition of invasiveness of drug-resistant cells. In this regard, long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) play a pivotal role in both processes and are important for cancer detection, progression, diagnosis, therapy response, and prognostic values. As the involvement of more lncRNAs is elucidated in chemoresistance mechanisms, an improvement in diagnostic and prognostic tools could promote an advance in targeted and specific therapies in precision oncology.

The FAERS, FDA Adverse Event Reporting System, has reported certain adverse reactions to vaccines that may occur uncommonly, with neurological symptoms being the most frequent of this group, manifesting as dizziness, pain headache, neuralgia, muscle spasms, myalgia, and paraesthesia. CoronaVac-Sinovac® is a chemically inactive whole virus vaccine for COVID-19, created from African green monkey kidney cells that have been inoculated with the SARS-CoV-2 CZ02 strain. 90 young volunteer students between 20 and 30 years old received the immunization schedule in two doses 50 days apart, in the present study the symptoms secondary to the first and second dose were observed, using an instrument for collecting information regarding the health status before and after the administration of the first and second dose of vaccination, focused on side effects. The results showed as the most frequent symptoms: Insomnia, tiredness, joint pain, drowsiness and localized pain in the puncture area, the latter being the most frequent, a close association was also observed with sex, age, and body mass index. Studies with a larger number of observed populations are necessary to establish conclusive results (AU)

ABSTRACT: The central giant cell lesion (CGCL) is a benign osteolytic lesion which in some cases presents an aggressive behavior with recurrence and poor prognosis. Ki67 is a nuclear protein whose general function is the regulation of cell proliferation. This marker is used to identify proliferating cells and as a prognostic tool in the diagnosis of neoplasms. The aim of this study was to quantify the immune expression of Ki-67 in the different cell populations of CGCL and analyze its association with clinical, demographic and radiographic characteristics. The Ki-67 immune expression of 17 cases of LCCG was evaluated in two cell populations: multinucleated giant cells (CGM) and stromal mesenchymal cells (SMC). The statistical analysis was carried out with SAS 9.0 and SPSS version 23.0, with an alpha tax level of P <0.05. The CME showed average immune expression of 9.4 % and the CGM of 0.65 %. No statistically significant relationship was found between the clinical, demographic and radiographic characteristics of the CGCL and the immune expression of Ki-67. The expression of Ki-67 in CME suggests that this population is in constant cellular activity, and that the CGCL are dynamic lesions in a continuous differentiation process.

Abstract: Odontoma is the most commonly found odontogenic tumor (3576%). Odontoma is a benign tumor originating from an alteration of differentiated mesenchymal and epithelial odontogenic cells; it has the capacity of forming enamel, dentin and cement. They are classifi ed into compound and complex, in a 2:1 relationship, the difference between both being dental tissue organization. Etiology is still unknown but relation to infections, hereditary anomalies, odontoblastic hyperactivity and trauma has been explored. Since these tumors are asymptomatic, 75% of all cases are diagnosed before the second decade of life, due to a delay in eruption of permanent teeth. Treatment of choice for these tumors is enucleation, attempting to preserve the tooth; relapse is very uncommon.
