RESUMO

This study aimed to define the CT features of colorectal tumors in dogs and assess CT's role in tumor staging. It was a retrospective, multicenter, descriptive study involving dogs with a cyto-histopathological diagnosis of colorectal tumors and high-quality pre- and post-contrast CT scans of the abdomen. CT successfully identified colorectal lesions in all cases, showing variations such as wall thickening, presence of masses, and luminal stenosis. It also detected lymph node involvement. Overall, this study helps us to understand the CT features of both epithelial and mesenchymal colorectal tumors, emphasizing CT's importance in staging and surgical planning for affected dogs. Larger studies are needed to identify specific CT findings for different colorectal neoplasms.

RESUMO

Susceptibility-weighted imaging (SWI) is a gradient echo (GE) MRI sequence. Intravenous administration of gadolinium (Gd) may affect GE images, but its effect on SWI has not been investigated in veterinary medicine. This cross-sectional prospective study evaluated the effects of Gd on SWI. Seventy-one dogs that underwent brain MRI were included and distributed in two groups. Susceptibility-weighted imaging was performed pre- and postcontrast, obtained immediately after Gd administration (Group A: n = 35) or delayed (Group B: n = 36; median delay 19.9 min). Pre- and post-Gd SWI were analyzed for signal intensity changes in the lentiform nuclei of gray matter (GM), in the centrum semiovale of white matter (WM), and in brain lesions. No difference in GM signal intensity was identified in either group between pre- and postcontrast images (Group A, P = .395; Group B, P = .895). In group A, WM signal intensity was lower in pre- than post-Gd sequences (P = .019). Brain lesions were identified in 30/71 (41%) cases; the signal intensity of intracranial lesions was significantly lower in pre- than post-Gd images in both groups (P < .001); the number of lesions influenced the difference in signal intensity in group B (P = .043). Susceptibility artifacts did not change in appearance between pre- and postcontrast images in either the normal brain or in parenchymal lesions. In conclusion, Gd may modify the signal intensity of WM and brain lesions but does not affect the susceptibility artifacts and does not interfere with SWI interpretation.

RESUMO

The reaction of ethylene in condensed phases under high pressure has been investigated by ab initio molecular dynamics. Both disordered and crystalline samples have been simulated, and some insights on the reaction mechanism have been obtained. System size effects have been investigated for the disordered samples. A polymerization reaction occurs by an ionic mechanism. In both the disordered and the crystal phases, the reaction products obtained (linear chains in the disordered systems and branched chains in the crystal) are in qualitative agreement with the experiments.

RESUMO

The reactivity of propene under high pressure has been investigated in the framework of Car-Parrinello molecular dynamics. Changes in structural and electronic properties due to pressure have been analyzed in systems with a density ranging from 0.855 to 2.151 g/cm(3). A ionic collective mechanism which leads to the formation of oligomers has been found by both spin restricted and spin polarized formalism. The maximally localized Wannier centers analysis has allowed us to characterize the addition scheme and to identify a Wannier center with a high spread value involved in the formation of the principal reaction products.
