RESUMO

Sea cucumbers have high economic value, and in most forms of trade, their body wall is typically the only part that is harvested and sold. The organs of the sea cucumber, collectively known as the viscera, are frequently discarded, contributing to land and water pollution. However, discarded sea cucumber viscera contain various nutrients that can be used in many applications. Therefore, this review highlights the biological and economic aspects of sea cucumbers, followed by a critical discussion of the nutritional value of their internal organs and possible applications, including as functional feed additives in the aquaculture industry, sources of natural testosterone for application in sex reversal and production of monosex population, of neuroprotective agents against central nervous system disorders and of cosmetic ingredients, especially for skin whitening and anti-ageing products. The review further highlights the valorisation potential of viscera to maximize their economic potential, thus providing an enormous prospect for reusing sea cucumber waste, thereby reducing the negative impact of the sea cucumber fishery sector on the environment.

RESUMO

House Building Tips is the title of a classic text containing historical information on early house construction in Malay communities. These tips were written by a scholar with knowledge of house construction through observation of the surrounding environment. In Malaysia, written sources or records of house construction are scarce and underexposed. As such, this research was conducted to guarantee the written legacy of the construction of Malay houses. The purpose of this paper is to introduce a statistical data source of house building tips that is laden with Malay ingenuity and identity. The wordlists generated from this study can become a source of reference for the field of Malay architecture. Accordingly, this study utilises the quantitative method by applying the Linguistic Corpus Statistical Approach; these data utilise specific corpus development procedures, beginning with text collection, scanning and cleaning processes, text annotation, and data storing in plain text. Next, the data analysis procedure utilises a corpus software, LancsBox, to generate specialised wordlists. The bubble graphs are developed based on these wordlists through the Tableau software, and illustrate the most used lexical items with the raw and relative frequency values. This facilitates searches for, and the reading of, architectural words and architectural word references. These data represent written sources that need to be preserved and become points of reference concerning Malay architectural ingenuity and identity.

RESUMO

Healthcare systems are evolving to meet the demands of an ageing population whereby the provision of health care services in the community has increased to alleviate the burden faced by acute care health facilities. As the result, the number of community nurses are expected to increase in order to meet the demand. Several studies have identified the unique challenges faced by the growing responsibilities of community nurses. However, fewer studies focused on the experiences of nurses transitioning to become community nurses as they rise to meet the unique challenges of working in the community. This study aimed to explore the experiences of nurses' transitions into community care while gaining insight into the transition process. The study adopted the exploratory qualitative approach. Data collection was performed through semi-structured interviews with 14 community nurses in Singapore. Interview sessions were digitally recorded and transcribed into verbatim, and the thematic analysis approach was used for data analysis. Three major themes and nine subthemes were developed from the data of 14 interviews. The three major themes are: 'Changes in Dynamics in a Nurse-Patient Relationship', 'To Live Up to Expectations', and 'Negotiating the Landscape in the Community'. New community nurses are experiencing stress and struggling to adapt with performing nursing care in uncontrolled environments. Additionally, higher expectations have been set on them even when they are still in transition. It is important to provide support for nurses, including in-service talks, courses and formal orientation programs. The study findings highlighted the importance of adequately preparing new community nurses and provided insights on developing a customised formal orientation program. This study also contributed to the limited body of knowledge with respect to nurses' transition experiences into community care.

RESUMO

Rice tungro disease (RTD) is a serious constraint to rice production in South and Southeast Asia. RTD is caused by Rice tungro spherical virus (RTSV) and Rice tungro bacilliform virus. Rice cv. Utri Merah is resistant to RTSV. To identify the gene or genes involved in RTSV resistance, the association of genotypic and phenotypic variations for RTSV resistance was examined in backcross populations derived from Utri Merah and rice germplasm with known RTSV resistance. Genetic analysis revealed that resistance to RTSV in Utri Merah was controlled by a single recessive gene (tsv1) mapped within an approximately 200-kb region between 22.05 and 22.25 Mb of chromosome 7. A gene for putative translation initiation factor 4G (eIF4G(tsv1)) was found in the tsv1 region. Comparison of eIF4G(tsv1) gene sequences among susceptible and resistant plants suggested the association of RTSV resistance with one of the single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) sites found in exon 9 of the gene. Examination of the SNP site in the eIF4G(tsv1) gene among various rice plants resistant and susceptible to RTSV corroborated the association of SNP or deletions in codons for Val(1060-1061) of the predicted eIF4G(tsv1) with RTSV resistance in rice.
