[An outbreak of cholera (El Tor) in Samarkand Province, Uzbekistan in 1990]. / Vspyshka kholery (El'-Tor) v Samarkandskoi oblasti Uzbekistana v 1990 g.

A group outbreak of cholera caused by Vibrio eltor in the Samarkand Province++ in 1990 is analyzed. The retrospective analysis of the isolation of V. cholerae from water of surface reservoirs has been made. The study points out that since the cholera epidemic of 1985 V. cholerae avirulent strains, serogroup O1, have been periodically isolated in the Samarkand Province. The conclusion has been made that the isolation of even avirulent strains only from environmental objects is indicative of the unfavorable epidemiological situation in this area and of the necessity to take measures for improving epidemiological surveillance.

[Optimization of bacteriologic studies of cholera]. / Optimizatsiia bakteriologicheskogo issledovaniia na kholeru.

A colored medium is described, consisting of dry nutrient agar, 1 percent mannose, and 0.02 percent bromothymol blue. Use of this medium helps accelerate the process of vibrio growth and differentiate mannose-positive vibrios from mannose-negative ones. The described medium is simple to make and use, thus recommending it for bacteriologic laboratories.

[2 cases of tabetic arthropathy]. / Dva sluchaia tabeticheskoi artropatii.

Two cases of tabetic arthropathy are described. Surgical treatment administered to both patients has been ineffective. Analysis of the case histories, clinical features, x-ray and serological findings has helped diagnose tabetic arthropathy of the right knee joint. Tabetic arthropathy is a rare disease, and its clinical picture is not known to physicians of a general profile; this explains the diagnostic errors in the described cases.

[Serovars of nonagglutinating vibrios isolated on the territory of the Uzbek SSR and their role in the development of acute intestinal diseases]. / O serovarakh neaggliutiniruiushchikhsia vobrionov, vydelennykh na territorii Uzbekskoi SSR, i ikh roli v razvitii ostrykh kishechnykh zabolevanii.

As the result of the serotyping of 1,223 NAG vibrio strains isolated in the Uzbek SSR from the environment and 659 strains isolated from gastroenteritis patients and from vibriocarriers, the serovars of 563 strains (46%) and 420 strains (63%), respectively, were determined. The prevailing serovars were 08, 06, 09, 014, 05, 039, 041, 013, 019 among the strains isolated from the environment and 08, 041, 037, 05, 039, 024, 06 among the strains isolated from humans. The strains belonging to serovars 05, 06, 08, 024, 037, 039, 041 were isolated both from the environment and from humans. The possible role of these strains in the development of acute gastroenteritis and in the formation of vibriocarriership in humans is pointed out.

[Comparative features of methos of inducing auxotrophic mutants of cholera and nonagglutinating vibrios]. / Sravnitel'naia kharakteristika metodov induktsii auksotrofnykh mutantov kholernykh i neaggliutiniruiushchikhsia vibrionov.

The effect of chemical mutagens (EI, NEU, NMU, NMG) on six El-Tor strains and eight NAG-vibryos was studied in order to obtain auxotrophic mutatns. The methods used showed the advantage of A. Adelberg and D. Mayers's method in the Yu. G. Suchkov's modification. It enables to get a greater number of mutants, and it differs from other methods in the simplicity in organization of experiments. The mutants obtained of El-Tor and NAC-vibryos differed from each other and from initial strains in their biochemical properties, agglutinability, phagolisability and culture requirements.
