Context: Nano-calcium hydroxide (NCH) has been proven to have several advantages over normal calcium hydroxide, supporting in its possible use as an intracanal medicament. Aim: The aim is to evaluate and compare calcium ion release and pH change using NCH with different vehicles as intracanal medicament. Subjects and Methods: Sixty freshly extracted premolars were decoronated at the cementoenamel junction level and the length was standardized. Canals were enlarged to F3 size using protaper rotary system. The samples were divided into three groups (n = 20), namely NCH + distilled water (Group 1), NCH + propylene glycol (Group 2), and NCH + chitosan (CT) (Group 3). Each sample was suspended in 6 ml of distilled water using silicone putty with only the apical third of the roots immersed. The pH and calcium ions were assessed at 24 h, 7 days, 15 days, and 30 days using a pH meter and ultraviolet spectrophotometer, respectively. Statistical Analysis: Comparison of mean calcium release and pH change was made using Kruskal-Wallis ANOVA with post-hoc Dunn's test. The level of significance was set at 5%. Results: A significant difference was seen in the calcium ion release and pH change among the three groups at 24 h, 7 days, 15 days, and 30 days. Conclusions: NCH mixed with propylene glycol showed alkaline pH and adequate release of calcium ions till 30 days. NCH mixed with CT exhibited a high pH at the end of 30 days. Both combinations proved their efficacy as intracanal medicaments.

Background: Discoloration of tooth-colored restorations due to various factors is one of the principal causes behind the failure of aesthetics. There has been an surge in the consumption of herbal beverages in recent times and the dietary factors play a potential role in the discoloration tooth-coloured restorations. This study was done to juxtapose the staining ability of green tea (GT), moringa tea (MT), and hibiscus tea (HT) on a nano-filled composite restorative material. Methods: The study was conducted in-vitro on composite samples prepared using moulds. 112 discs were prepared from Filtek TM Z350XT composite using a brass mould lined with mylar strips. Samples were divided into GT, MT, HT, and artificial saliva (AS) groups and immersed in freshly prepared beverages for 15 minutes each day for 45 days. Digital reflectance spectrophotometer was utilized to record color at baseline, 30, and 45 days. Repeated-measures ANOVA with a post-hoc Bonferroni test was used to compare groups within each group. ANOVA with a post-hoc Games Howell test was used to compare mean differences in ΔE among the groups. Results: Maximum discoloration was observed in the GT, followed by HT and MT, with the least being in the AS group at the end of 30 and 45 days (P<0.001 and P<0.001) respectively. Conclusions: The universal nano-filled composite material showed clinically detectable discoloration when exposed to Green Tea, Hibiscus Tea, and Moringa Tea which increased with time. Herbal beverages have the potential to cause discoloration of the composite resin which is often the choice of material for anterior aesthetic restorations.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the color stability of the newer glass ionomer cements (GIC) when exposed to "Green tea" (GT), "Tulsi tea" (TT), and "Areca tea" (AT) using spectrophotometric analysis. MATERIALS AND METHODS: We selected commercially available GC Fuji IX GP EXTRA and Ketac Universal for this study. Eighty disc-shaped samples were made using a mold, which were immersed in the freshly prepared test solutions (distilled water, GT, TT, and AT) for 15 minutes per day for 60 days. The color estimation was done using a spectrophotometer. RESULTS: GC Fuji IX samples had a significantly higher mean difference in ΔE value than Ketac Universal when immersed in GT, AT, and control (P<0.001, 0.018, and <0.001), respectively. With GC Fuji IX, GT and AT stained more than TT and control solutions. Samples of Ketac Universal showed a significantly higher mean difference in ΔE values when immersed in AT, followed by GT, TT, and control. CONCLUSION: Within the study's limitations, we conclude that both the GICs exhibited staining over time on exposure to all the test solutions. Ketac Universal demonstrated lower staining potential than GIC Fuji IX GP Extra for GT and AT.

OBJECTIVE: To compare the effect of Green, Tulsi, and Areca teas on the color stability of two composite materials on the 30th and 60th days. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Two light cure composite restorative materials, Brilliant EverGlow (Group 1) and Brilliant NG, (Group 2) with different resin and filler characteristics were selected. The test solutions selected were Green tea, Tulsi tea, Areca tea, and artificial saliva (control group). In total, 104-disc shaped specimens were fabricated using a custom made brass mold as per the manufacturer instructions. All specimens were put in storage for rehydration and complete polymerization at 37°C in distilled water for 24 hours. Specimens of each composite material were randomly divided into four subgroups of 13 samples. Tea solutions were freshly prepared, and specimens were immersed in the respective solutions every day for 15 minutes for 60 days. Specimens were stored in artificial saliva after the immersion regimen. The color evaluation was done before immersion, on the 30th and 60th day, using a digital reflectance spectrophotometer. RESULTS: At 30 days, Group 1 specimens immersed in Areca and Green teas showed significantly higher mean values than those in control and Tulsi tea. At 60 days in Group 1, specimens in Areca tea showed significantly higher mean value, followed by Green tea, Tulsi tea, and control. At 30 and 60 days in group 2, specimens in control had significantly lower mean values than other tea preparations. Group 1 showed a higher mean difference in ΔE than Group 2 specimens immersed in Green and Areca teas at 30 days (P=0.001 and 0.001) and 60 days (P=0.001 and <0.001), respectively. CONCLUSION: All herbal tea preparations exhibited staining potential, which increased over time, and Areca tea showed the highest staining potential. Understanding the staining potential of newer tea preparations on recent composite materials helps the clinician to choose the right restorative materials.

RESUMO

Endodontically treated teeth with the loss of coronal tooth structure when left untreated for a long period may cause supraeruption, drifting, tipping, and rotation of adjacent and opposing teeth. This may be challenging to the clinician, when fabricating a crown because of inadequate interocclusal space. This case report describes a simple technique to restore an endodontically treated maxillary first premolar with the loss of coronal tooth structure and lack of interocclusal space. The maxillary first premolar had a single root canal and was endodontically treated. The lower premolar had supraerupted reducing the interocclusal space. A minimally invasive and esthetic technique was used to restore the tooth with limited interocclusal clearance. The tooth was restored with a Richmond crown, which had the morphology of a canine instead of a premolar. Thus, the tooth was salvaged by changing the morphology of the crown and the desired functional and esthetic results were obtained.

RESUMO

The mesiobuccal root of the maxillary molars is well known to pose a hindrance during endodontic therapy. Presented here is a case of a maxillary left second molar where three canals were located in its mesiobuccal root with the use of visual and diagnostic aids. Difficulties encountered during the process of unveiling the tooth's internal anatomy were discussed. The dilemmas encountered pertained to the root canal configuration, the nomenclature of the extra canals, and the justification for the presence of a third canal. The root canal configuration of 3-2-1 was confirmed for the mesiobuccal root using information gained from clinical, radiographic, and multi-detector computed tomography (MDCT) scan findings. This case demonstrates the need for efforts to locate extra canals in the mesiobuccal root of the maxillary molars as their internal anatomy remains a mystery.

RESUMO

Gemination, a relatively uncommon dental anomaly, is characterized by its peculiar representation as a tooth with a bifid crown and a common root and root canal. It usually occurs in primary dentition. To come across gemination in a supernumerary tooth is a rare phenomenon. The purpose of this paper is to present a unique case of hyperdontia wherein gemination in an impacted supernumerary tooth resulted in a trifid crown unlike the usual bifid crown. The role of conventional radiographs as well as computed tomography, to accurately determine the morphology and spatial location, and to arrive at a diagnosis, is also emphasized in this paper.

RESUMO

Multiple idiopathic cervical resorption is an uncommon condition, the etiology of which remains unknown. The case of a 36-year-old woman with idiopathic resorption in the cervical areas of multiple teeth is presented. Her medical history was noncontributory, but her dental history was valuable in reaching a diagnosis. Hematologic and endocrinal investigations were unremarkable, but a computed tomography scan revealed relevant information. The progression of the lesion and involvement of multiple teeth without any pattern or chronology are challenges faced when diagnosing and treating this condition.
