RESUMO

A 23-week-old female intact American Bulldog was presented for a two-week history of progressive circling to the right, twitching, and altered mentation. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed a non-contrast enhancing hemorrhagic mass centered in the right thalamus with concurrent subdural and intraventricular hemorrhage. Post-mortem histologic examination of the brain confirmed a mass centered on the thalamus with histomorphologic features consistent with a high-grade astrocytoma with pilocytic morphology. To the authors' knowledge, the present case is the first to report clinical and imaging characteristics of a high-grade astrocytoma with pilocytic morphology in a young dog.

Background: Diuresis following relief of urethral obstruction is a potentially life-threatening complication of feline urethral obstruction. Evidence regarding the incidence of post-obstructive diuresis (POD) in cats is scarce. Establishing historical, physical examination, and initial clinicopathologic variables associated with risk for developing POD may better enable clinicians to direct treatment for this common feline emergency and to educate clients regarding financial expectations. Objectives: To report the incidence of POD in a large group of cats with urethral obstruction and determine whether select presenting physical examination or initial clinicopathologic variables may predict the onset or severity of POD. Methods: The records of 260 cats that were admitted to the University of California, Davis, Veterinary Medical Teaching Hospital for urethral obstruction were reviewed. Urine output after urethral catherization was categorized into no POD (urine output ≤ 2 mL/kg/h), mild-moderate POD (urine output > 2 but <5 mL/kg/h) and severe POD (urine output ≥ 5 mL/kg/h). Select presentation physical examination, venous acid-base, electrolyte, serum biochemistry, and urinalysis results were compared among the groups. Results: 67.7% of cats experienced POD, and in 35% of cats it was categorized as severe. Evaluated historical and physical examination variables correlated with development of POD were lower body weight and, for severe POD, hypovolemia. Clinicopathologic variables associated with development of POD included acidemia, azotemia, hyperphosphatemia, hyperkalemia, hyponatremia, hypochloremia, hypocalcemia, hypermagnesemia, and hypoalbuminemia. Cats with severe POD were hospitalized a median of 1 day longer than those without POD. Conclusions: Results of the present study indicate that there are presentation variables associated with onset and severity of POD following relief of feline urethral obstruction.

Herbicide use has increased dramatically since 2001, particularly Roundup®. Effective in agricultural practice, Roundup® adversely affects non-target organisms, including reproductive and endocrine systems. We exposed fruit flies, Drosophila melanogaster, to either Roundup® Ready to Use, containing pelargonic acid and glyphosate, or Roundup® Super Concentrate, that includes glyphosate and POEA, at sublethal concentrations. Both Roundup® formulations reduced ovary volume with fewer mature oocytes, most adversely at the highest concentration tested. Flies exposed within 2 h of eclosion were affected more than at 4 h, suggesting a critical period of increased ovarian sensitivity. These results support multi-species evidence that glyphosate-based herbicides interfere with normal development of the reproductive systems of non-target organisms.

Genetically modified foods have become pervasive in diets of people living in the US. By far the most common genetically modified foods either tolerate herbicide application (HT) or produce endogenous insecticide (Bt). To determine whether these toxicological effects result from genetic modification per se, or from the increase in herbicide or insecticide residues present on the food, we exposed fruit flies, Drosophila melanogaster, to food containing HT corn that had been sprayed with the glyphosate-based herbicide Roundup®, HT corn that had not been sprayed with Roundup®, or Roundup® in a variety of known glyphosate concentrations and formulations. While neither lifespan nor reproductive behaviors were affected by HT corn, addition of Roundup® increased mortality with an LC50 of 7.1 g/L for males and 11.4 g/L for females after 2 days of exposure. Given the many genetic tools available, Drosophila are an excellent model system for future studies about genetic and biochemical mechanisms of glyphosate toxicity.

BACKGROUND: Patients with end-stage renal disease and aortoiliac stenosis are often considered ineligible for kidney transplantation, although kidney transplantation has been acknowledged as the best therapy for end-stage renal disease. The clinical outcomes of kidney transplantation in patients with aortoiliac stenosis are not well-studied. This study aimed to assess the impact of aortoiliac stenosis on graft and patient survival. METHODS: This retrospective, single-center study included kidney transplant recipients transplanted between January 1, 2000, and December 31, 2016, who received contrast-enhanced imaging. Patients with aortoiliac stenosis were classified using the Trans-Atlantic Inter-Society Consensus (TASC) II classification and categorized as having TASC II A/B lesions or having TASC II C/D lesions. Patients without aortoiliac stenosis were functioning as controls. RESULTS: A total number of 374 patients was included in this study (n = 88 with TASC II lesions, n = 286 as controls). Death-censored graft survival was similar to the controls. Patient and uncensored graft survival was decreased in patients with TASC II C/D lesions (log-rank test P < 0.001). Patients with TASC II C/D lesions had a higher risk of 90-day mortality (hazard ratio, 3.96; 95% confidence interval, 1.12-14.04). In multivariable analysis, having a TASC II C/D lesion was an independent risk factor for mortality (hazard ratio, 3.25; 95% confidence interval, 1.87-5.67; P < 0.001). Having any TASC II lesion was not a risk factor for graft loss (overall P = 0.282). CONCLUSIONS: Kidney transplantation in patients with TASC II A/B is feasible and safe without increased risk of perioperative mortality. TASC II C/D decreases patient survival. Death-censored graft survival is unaffected.
