RESUMO

Aims Our aim was to determine the number of cases of aneuploidy which were prenatally diagnosed in our tertiary referral unit from 2005-2015 and to analyse the subsequent outcomes of Trisomies 13, 18 and 21(T13, T18 and T21). Methods This was a retrospective observational study. We firstly determined the total number of prenatally diagnosed aneuploidies. We then analysed their subsequent outcomes including average gestation at miscarriage or IUD, mode of delivery and neonatal outcome. Results 402 cases of T13, T18 or T21 were identified of which 40% opted for expectant management. T18 was the most likely diagnosis to result in miscarriage, IUD or intrapartum death. The highest caesarean delivery rate was in T21. Conclusion With regards to T13 and T18, live birth rates show that some parents may achieve the goal of spending time with their baby in the immediate postpartum period. This information will act as a valuable resource in our counselling.

RESUMO

In cuprate superconductors, high magnetic fields have been used extensively to suppress superconductivity and expose the underlying normal state. Early measurements revealed insulatinglike behavior in underdoped material versus temperature T, in which resistivity increases on cooling with a puzzling log(1/T) form. We instead use microwave measurements of flux-flow resistivity in YBa_{2}Cu_{3}O_{6+y} and Tl_{2}Ba_{2}CuO_{6+δ} to study charge transport deep inside the superconducting phase, in the low-temperature and low-field regime. Here, the transition from metallic low-temperature resistivity (dρ/dT>0) to a log(1/T) upturn persists throughout the superconducting doping range, including a regime at high carrier dopings in which the field-revealed normal-state resistivity is Fermi-liquid-like. The log(1/T) form is thus likely a signature of d-wave superconducting order, and the field-revealed normal state's log(1/T) resistivity may indicate the free-flux-flow regime of a phase-disordered d-wave superconductor.

RESUMO

CeCoIn5 is a heavy fermion superconductor with strong similarities to the high-Tc cuprates, including quasi-two-dimensionality, proximity to antiferromagnetism and probable d-wave pairing arising from a non-Fermi-liquid normal state. Experiments allowing detailed comparisons of their electronic properties are of particular interest, but in most cases are difficult to realize, due to their very different transition temperatures. Here we use low-temperature microwave spectroscopy to study the charge dynamics of the CeCoIn5 superconducting state. The similarities to cuprates, in particular to ultra-clean YBa2Cu3O(y), are striking: the frequency and temperature dependence of the quasiparticle conductivity are instantly recognizable, a consequence of rapid suppression of quasiparticle scattering below T(c); and penetration-depth data, when properly treated, reveal a clean, linear temperature dependence of the quasiparticle contribution to superfluid density. The measurements also expose key differences, including prominent multiband effects and a temperature-dependent renormalization of the quasiparticle mass.

RESUMO

Identification of a biomarker of prognosis and response to therapy that can be assessed preoperatively would significantly improve overall outcomes for patients with pancreatic cancer. In this study, patients whose tumours exhibited high LMO4 expression had a significant survival advantage following operative resection, whereas the survival of those patients whose tumours had low or no LMO4 expression was not significantly different when resection was compared with operative biopsy alone.

RESUMO

An experimental apparatus consisting of a metal framework, a strain gauge, and a Wheatstone bridge was used to measure the retraction force delivered to the mandibular incisors by a contraction utility arch wire (0.016 by 0.016 inch blue Elgiloy). The contraction utility arch wire was activated 1 mm. and retraction forces were recorded as the deflection of a point image on an oscilloscope. The results indicated that the retraction forces at the incisor positions were reasonably within an optimal force range to move teeth quickly with minimal tissue damage and discomfort. However, the lateral incisor positions in both ovoid and narrow arch forms received significantly more force than the central incisor positions, and the narrow tapered arch form delivered more retraction force than the ovoid arch form.

RESUMO

Six nonstressful personality instruments were concurrently validated using respondent and close friend ratings on specific scale dimensions. Tests were administered to 203 predominantly Caucasian college students. Prior to testing, the individual and a close friend through self-ratings and ratings of the respondents had estimated the strengths of the tested personality Variables on a seven-point scale. The definitions of the various personality dimensions were taken from publisher's manuals. An estimated whole test validity was obtained by an average of the individual scale validities using a conversion of Pearson's r to z'. Significant differences among and between subtest validities were found by ANOVA. All "self-rating" validities were significant (.001), with two of these self-rating validities significantly different (.01) than the other four tests. Only two "other-rating" validities were significant. All six tests appeared to be valid for college population use From preliminary analysis, counselees could rate themselves accurately on most test measures. In some cases self-ratings might be used in lieu of giving the test.

RESUMO

Clinicians who recommend the use of antifungal agents for angular cheilitis may be treating the symptoms and not the predisposing cause of the disease. Iron deficiency should be considered as part of the differential diagnosis whenever angular cheilitis is encountered, especially in women of child-bearing age.
