RESUMO

We experimentally and theoretically investigate the scattering of a photonic quantum field from another stored in a strongly interacting atomic Rydberg ensemble. Considering the many-body limit of this problem, we derive an exact solution to the scattering-induced spatial decoherence of multiple stored photons, allowing for a rigorous understanding of the underlying dissipative quantum dynamics. Combined with our experiments, this analysis reveals a correlated coherence-protection process in which the scattering from one excitation can shield all others from spatial decoherence. We discuss how this effect can be used to manipulate light at the quantum level, providing a robust mechanism for single-photon subtraction, and experimentally demonstrate this capability.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: To determine the clinical utility of the midbrain-to-pons (M/P) ratio as a clinical biomarker of progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) in patients with non-fluent primary progressive aphasia syndromes. METHODS: Patients with PSP, progressive non-fluent aphasia (PNFA) and logopenic progressive aphasia (LPA) were recruited. Patients were diagnosed clinically, but pathological confirmation was available in a proportion of patients. Midbrain and pons areas were measured using Osirix Lite, a free DICOM viewer. The M/P ratio and Magnetic Resonance Parkinsonism Index were calculated and their diagnostic utility compared. RESULTS: A total of 72 participants were included (16 PSP, 18 PNFA, 16 LPA and 22 controls). Patients with PSP had motor features typical of the syndrome. Both the M/P ratio and Magnetic Resonance Parkinsonism Index differed significantly in PSP compared with controls. The M/P ratio was disproportionately reduced in PSP compared with PNFA and LPA (PSP, 0.182 ± 0.043; PNFA, 0.255 ± 0.034; LPA, 0.258 ± 0.033; controls, 0.292 ± 0.031; P < 0.001). An M/P ratio of ≤0.215 produced a positive predictive value of 77.8% for the diagnosis of PSP syndrome. Pathological examination revealed Alzheimer's disease in three cases (all LPA), pathological PSP in two cases (one clinical PSP and one PNFA) and corticobasal degeneration in one case (PNFA). The M/P ratio was ≤0.215 in both pathological cases of PSP. CONCLUSIONS: The M/P ratio was disproportionately reduced in PSP, suggesting its potential as a clinical marker of the PSP syndrome. Larger studies of pathologically confirmed cases are needed to establish the M/P ratio as a biomarker of PSP pathology.

We develop a theoretical framework to characterize the decoherence dynamics due to multi-photon scattering in an all-optical switch based on Rydberg atom induced nonlinearities. By incorporating the knowledge of this decoherence process into optimal photon storage and retrieval strategies, we establish optimized switching protocols for experimentally relevant conditions, and evaluate the corresponding limits in the achievable fidelities. Based on these results we work out a simplified description that reproduces recent experiments (Nat. Commun. 7 12480) and provides a new interpretation in terms of many-body decoherence involving multiple incident photons and multiple gate excitations forming the switch. Aside from offering insights into the operational capacity of realistic photon switching capabilities, our work provides a complete description of spin wave decoherence in a Rydberg quantum optics setting, and has immediate relevance to a number of further applications employing photon storage in Rydberg media.

We have investigated the projection patterns of peptidergic small-diameter primary afferent fibers to the cat sacrocaudal spinal cord, a region associated with midline structures of the lower urogenital system and of the tail. Calcitonin gene-related peptide (CGRP)-immunoreactive (CGRP-IR) primary afferent fibers were observed within the superficial laminae, rostrally as the typical inverted U-shaped band that capped the separate dorsal horns (S1 to rostral S2) and caudally as a broad band that spanned the entire mediolateral extent of the fused dorsal horns (caudal S2 and caudal). Within the dorsal gray commissure, labeling was seen as a periodic vertical, midline band. CGRP-IR labeling was prevalent in an extensive mediolateral distribution at the base of the dorsal horn, originating from both lateral and medial collateral bundles that extend from the superficial dorsal horn. Some bundles, in part traveling within the dorsal commissure, conspicuously crossed the midline. In addition to the robust projection to the superficial dorsal horn, there was a more extensive distribution of CGRP-IR fibers within the deeper portions of the cat sacrocaudal dorsal horn than has been reported for other regions of the cat spinal cord. Presumably, these deep projections convey visceral information to projection or segmental neurons at the neck of the dorsal horn and in the region of the central canal. This deep distribution overlaps the reported projections of the pelvic and pudendal nerves. In addition, the contralateral projections of CGRP-IR fibers may form an anatomical substrate of the bilateral receptive fields for selective dorsal horn neurons. The density and variety of CGRP-IR projection patterns is a reflection of the functional attributes of the innervated structures.

Neurokinin (NK) peptides such as substance P (SP) may modulate epithelial ion transport in the small intestine. The present study was undertaken to examine the pharmacological mechanisms by which SP and its endogenous homologs NKA and NKB affect active electrolyte transport in the mucosa of porcine jejunum. Neurokinins and NK agonist analogs increased short circuit current, a measure of active ion transport, across sheets of jejunal mucosa-submucosa with the order of potency: SP greater than [beta-Ala8]NKA4-10 greater than or equal to [Sar9,Met(O2)11]SP greater than NKA = Arg-NKB greater than NKB after their addition to the serosal aspect of tissues (SP EC50 = 11 nM). Epithelial responses to SP or NKA underwent rapid autotachyphylaxis and unidirectional cross-tachyphylaxis after repeated peptide administration. The neuronal conduction blocker tetrodotoxin significantly reduced NK efficacy. SP activity was significantly reduced in tissues pretreated with the muscarinic cholinoceptor blocker atropine or the eicosanoid synthesis inhibitor eicosa-5,8,11,14-tetraynoic acid. NK peptides increased contractility in longitudinally oriented strips of jejunal smooth muscle with an order of potency: [Sar9,Met(O2)11]SP greater than SP greater than Arg-NKB = [beta-Ala8]NKA4-10 greater than or equal to NKB = NKA (SP EC50 = 11 nM). SP-induced contractions were reduced by 70 to 80% in tissues pretreated with atropine or the neuronal Ca++ channel blocker, omega-conotoxin. [125I]Bolton-Hunter-substance P (BHSP) bound specifically to a single population of sites in slide-mounted sections of mucosa-submucosa and smooth muscle with Kd = 0.3 and 0.1 nM and Bmax = 18 and 31 fmol/mg protein, respectively.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

We have investigated the organizational and morphological features of motoneurons from cat sacrocaudal spinal cord, the portion of the neuraxis that innervates the tail. This information is pertinent for development of a new model of spinal cord injury. An understanding of sacrocaudal circuitry is essential for physiological and behavioral assessment of the effects of sacrocaudal lesions. Observations from Nissl-stained sections corroborated Rexed's cytoarchitectural scheme. Putative motoneurons were located within two regions of the ventral horn: the ventromedial nucleus (lamina IX) and the nucleus commissuralis. To map motoneuron pools, cholera toxin-horseradish peroxidase conjugate was injected into each dorsal tail muscle. The dorsomedial muscle was innervated by ipsilateral nucleus commissuralis motoneurons. The dorsolateral and intertransversarius muscles were innervated by ipsilateral lamina IX and nucleus commissuralis motoneurons. Cell bodies of retrogradely labeled sacrocaudal motoneurons ranged from 22 to 82 microns in diameter; the unimodal distributions peaked between 45 and 50 microns. Dendritic trees of motoneurons, revealed by retrograde labeling or by intracellular injection with horseradish peroxidase, were extensive. Five to eight primary dendrites originated from the cell body. Dendritic branches extended throughout the ipsilateral ventral gray matter, with processes spreading into the surrounding white matter and the base of the dorsal horn. Dendrites from motoneurons with their soma in the lateral portion of lamina IX formed a longitudinal plexus at the gray/white border. Medial dendrites from motoneurons in the nucleus commissuralis formed bundles in the ventral gray commissure and spread throughout the contralateral ventral horn. It is speculated that contralateral dendrites subserve synchronized co-contraction of medial muscles from both sides of the tail.

A case controlled study of 96 cases of sarcoidosis has been carried out in the Isle of Man. Age and sex matched controls were selected at random from the pathology and radiology records, which cover 85% of the resident population, and a second control group was drawn from a tuberculosis register. Special efforts were made to achieve a high level of ascertainment. In this study most cases occurred in young adults. It affected the sexes equally and occurred more frequently in the indigenous Manx population. Thirty eight cases (39.6%) had been in contact with the disease before diagnosis, compared with two (1.2%) of the combined controls. These contacts included members of the same household, colleagues at work, and close friends. A bias may have been introduced as patients would inevitably be more aware of the disease and be more likely to mention previous contact than the controls. Nevertheless, the evidence is considered to support the view that sarcoidosis is a communicable disease.

The incidence of sarcoidosis in a clearly defined island community has been determined in a seven year study. Special efforts were made to identify all cases, including those presenting to their general practitioners with only minor symptoms. A mean incidence of 14.7 per 100 000 per annum has been found in the years 1977-83 compared with an annual incidence of 3.5 per 100 000 in the preceding 15 years, when no specific attempts were made to identify sufferers from sarcoidosis. The lower figure is similar to the reported incidence in the United Kingdom and the difference is considered to be due to increased detection of cases during the study period. These findings suggest that a large proportion of cases of sarcoidosis in a general population may not be recorded in a registration system.
