RESUMO

Near-infrared (NIR) luminescent CuInS2-ZnS alloyed nanocrystals (CIZS-NCs) for highly fluorescence bioimaging have received considerable interest in recent years. Owing, they became a desirable alternative to heavy-metal based-NCs and organic dyes with unique optical properties and low-toxicity for bioimaging and optoelectronic applications. In the present study, bright and robust CIZS-NCs have been synthesized within 5 min, as-high-as 230 °C without requiring any inert-gas atmosphere via microwave-solvothermal (MW-ST) method. Subsequently, the in vitro and in vivo nano-xenotoxicity and cellular uptake of the MUA-functionalized CIZS-NCs were investigated in L929, Vero, MCF7 cell lines and zebrafish-embryos. We observed minimal toxicity and acute teratogenic consequences upto 62.5 µg/ml of the CIZS-NCs in zebrafish-embryos. We also observed spontaneous uptake of the MUA-functionalized CIZS-NCs by 3 dpf older zebrafish-embryos that are evident through bright red fluorescence-emission at a low concentration of 7.8 µg/mL. Hence, we propose that the rapid, low-cost, large-scale "sustainable" MW-ST synthesis of CIZS-NCs, is an ideal bio-nanoprobe with good temporal and spatial resolution for rapid labeling, long-term in vivo tracking and intravital-fluorescence-bioimaging (IVBI).

RESUMO

Pt-encapsulated Pd(x)Co(100-x) nanoalloy electrocatalysts supported on carbon have been synthesized by a rapid microwave-assisted solvothermal (MW-ST) method within 15 min at as low as 300 degrees C. Subsequently, the samples have been heat treated at 900 degrees C in a reducing gas atmosphere to obtain Pt-Pd-Co nanoalloys. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis of the as-synthesized and 900 degrees C heat-treated samples reveals interesting changes in phase compositions and degree of alloying with Co and Pt contents and heat treatment. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) data of the as-synthesized samples confirm Pt enrichment on the surface of the Pd-Co nanoparticles. Rotating disk electrode (RDE) and single cell proton exchange membrane fuel cell measurements reveal that the as-synthesized Pt-encapsulated Pd(80)Co(20) (i.e., 75 wt % Pd(80)Co(20) + 25 wt % Pt) with 20 wt % total metal loading on carbon or 5 wt % Pt exhibit higher catalytic activity for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) compared to Pt with 20 wt % Pt loading on carbon. Significant changes in the catalytic activity for ORR occur on heat treatment at 900 degrees C as a result of changes in the phase composition and increase in particle size. This study demonstrates that the encapsulation of Pd-Co alloys with Pt offers a significant enhancement in activity for ORR per unit mass of Pt, offering a significant cost savings.

RESUMO

A simple procedure to prepare nanocrystalline mesoporous titania (meso-TiO2) is reported without any templating agent and it possesses a high BET surface area and a large pore wall thickness (11.3 nm) than that of meso-TiO2 prepared by other methods. Nanocrystalline meso-TiO, also has been synthesized with hexadecylamine template for comparison through known procedure. The meso-TiO2 materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction, FT-IR, UV-Vis absorbance spectra, thermal analysis, SEM, HRTEM and textural properties through N2 adsorption-desorption isotherms. Spherical shape particles in a range of few hundred nanometers are obtained in the template free method. Above systematic characterization provides direct indications toward the mechanism of formation of meso-TiO2 in the template free method. A comparison of the physical and textural properties indicates a possibility of coarse-tuning of the textural characteristics of mesoporous TiO2 by adopting different preparation methods.
