This study evaluates induced allelopathy in a rye-pigweed model driven by rye's (Secale cereale L.) allelopathic potential as a cover crop and pigweed's (Amaranthus retroflexus L.) notoriety as a weed. The response of rye towards pigweed's presence in terms of benzoxazinoids (BXs) provides valuable insight into induced allelopathy for crop improvement. In the 2 week plant stage, pigweed experiences a significant reduction in growth in rye's presence, implying allelopathic effects. Rye exhibits increased seedling length and BXs upsurge in response to pigweed presence. These trends persist in the 4 week plant stage, emphasizing robust allelopathic effects and the importance of different co-culture arrangements. Germination experiments show rye's ability to germinate in the presence of pigweed, while pigweed exhibits reduced germination with rye. High-performance liquid chromatography with diode-array detection (HPLC-DAD) analysis identifies allelopathic compounds (BXs), 2,4-dihydroxy-1,4-benzoxazin-3-one (DIBOA) and 2,4-dihydroxy-7-methoxy-1,4-benzoxazin-3-one (DIMBOA) in rye. Rye significantly increases BX production in response to pigweed, age-dependently. Furthermore, pigweed plants are screened for possible BX uptake from the rhizosphere. Results suggest that allelopathy in rye-pigweed co-cultures is influenced by seed timing, and age-dependent dynamics of plants' allelopathic compounds, providing a foundation for further investigations into chemical and ecological processes in crop-weed interactions.

Population increase, poverty, environmental degradation, and the use of synthetic herbicides are interdependent and closely linked and hence influence global food safety and stability of world agriculture. On the one hand, varied weeds, insects, and other pests have caused a tremendous loss in agricultural crop productivity annually. On the other hand, the use of synthetic insecticides, herbicides, fungicides, and other pesticides significantly disturbed the ecology of biotic communities in agricultural and natural ecosystems. Eventually, it destroyed the ecological balance in food chains. Interestingly, natural products released by the plants (allelochemicals) are secondary metabolites involved in ecological interactions and could be an important source of alternative agrochemicals. Mainly released by the plants as an outcome of acquaintances with other plants in their vicinity, these allelochemicals can also be used as eco-friendly substitutes for synthetic herbicides and other pesticides. Despite these facts, agrochemicals are either preferred over allelochemicals or the latter are not known in the direction of their use in achieving sustainability in agriculture. Given this, considering recent reports, this paper aims to: (1) emphasize allelochemicals; (2) overview the major biochemistry of allelochemicals; (3) critically discuss the role of allelopathy (and underlying major mechanisms) in the management of noxious weeds, insect pests, and major plant pathogens; and (4) enlighten the significant aspects so far not or least explored in the current context.

Cancer is the major challenge across world and the adenocarcinoma of prostate malignancy is the second most prevalent male cancer. Various medicinal plants are used for the treatment and management of various cancers. Matricaria chamomilla L., is one of the extensively used Unani medicament for the treatment of various type of diseases. In the current study we evaluated most of the parameters prescribed for drug standardization using pharmacognostic approaches. The 2,2 Diphenyl-1-picryl hydrazyl (DPPH) method was utilized for the analysis of antioxidant activity in the flower extracts of M. chamomilla. Moreover, we analyzed the antioxidant and cytotoxic activity of M. chamomilla (Gul-e Babuna) through in-vitro method. DPPH (2,2-diphenyl-1-picryl-hydrazl-hydrate) method was utilized for the analysis of antioxidant activity in the flower extracts of M. chamomilla. CFU and wound healing assay were performed to determine the anti-cancer activity. The results demonstrated that various extracts of M. chamomilla fulfilled most of the parameters of drug standardization and contained good antioxidant and anticancer activities. The ethyl acetate showed higher anticancer activity followed by aqueous, hydroalcoholic, petroleum benzene and methanol by CFU method. Also, the wound healing assay demonstrated that ethyl acetate extract has more significant effect followed by methanol and petroleum benzene extract on prostate cancer cell line (C4-2). The current study concluded that the extract of M. chamomilla flowers could act as good source of natural anti-cancer compounds.

Nanotechnology uses biological and non-biological materials to create new systems at the nanoscale level. In recent years, the use of silver nanomaterials has attracted worldwide attention thanks to their wide range of applications as catalysts in several environmental processes including the degradation of organic pollutants and medicinal biotechnology. This study reports the synthesis of silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) through different methods including the biogenic methods based on leaf extract of Conocarpus erectus and a bacterial strain Pseudomonas sp. as well as chemically based abiotic method and comparison of their dye degradation potential. The synthesis of AgNPs in all samples was confirmed by UV-visible spectroscopy peaks at 418-420 nm. Using scanning electrom microscopy (SEM), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR), X-ray differaction (XRD), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), the biologically synthesized AgNPs were characterized as spherical shape of material with capping proteins that were involved in the stabilization of nanoparticles (NPs). The biologically synthesized AgNPs showed higher degradation (< 90%) of dyes as compared to chemically synthesized NPs. A prominent reduction of total dissolved solids (TDS), electrical conductivity (EC), pH, and chemical oxygen demand (COD) in textile wastewater spiked with reactive black 5 and reactive red 120 was observed by biologically synthesized AgNPs. AgNPs synthesized by Conocarpus erectus and Pseudomonas sp. also showed better characteristic anticancer and antidiabetic activities as compared to chemically synthesized ones. The results of this study suggested that C. erectus and Pseudomonas sp. based AgNPs can be exploited as an eco-friendly and cost-efficient materials to treat the wastewater and potential other polluted environments as well as to serve the medicinal field.

The stress induced by allelochemicals present in stem aqueous extract (SAE) of Nicotiana plumbaginifolia on alterations in growth, ultrastructure on Cassia tora L., and mitotic changes on Allium cepa L. were inspected. Application of SAE at different concentrations (0.5, 1, 2, and 4%) expressively reduced the growth of C. tora in terms of seedling length and dry biomass. Moreover, the ultrastructural variations induced in the epidermis of Cassia leaf (adaxial and abaxial surface) of 15-day-old saplings were analyzed through scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The variations noticed are rupturing and shrinking of cells along epidermis; damaged margins, extensively curled leaf apex along with the appearance of puff-like structures, grooves, and thread-like structures on the leaf surface. The epidermal cells of samples exposed to treatment no longer appear smooth relative to control, besides showing necrosis as well. Upon exposure to different concentrations of extract, A. cepa root tip cells showed aberrations in chromosome arrangement and disparity in the shape of the interphase and prophase nuclei along various phases of mitotic cycle as compared to control. The mitotic index (MI) showed a concentration-dependent decline in onion root tips exposed to SAE. The aberrations appearing frequently were formation of multinucleated cells, sticky metaphase and anaphase with bridges, sticky telophase, disturbed polarity, etc. The results also show the induction of elongated cells, giant cells, and cells with membrane damage by extract treatment. To our knowledge, this is the first gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) analysis of the methanolic extract of N. plumbaginifolia stem. Overall, 62 compounds were reported, covering 99.61% of the entire constituents, which can be considered responsible for the allelopathic suppression of C. tora. The chief component was 4-tert-butylcalix[4]arene with the highest composition of 19.89%, followed by palmitic acid (12.25%), palmitoleic acid (8.23%), precocene 2 (7.53%), isophytyl acetate (4.01%), and betastigmasterol (3.95%).
