RESUMO

AI has become ubiquitous in our society, accelerated by the speed of the development of machine learning algorithms and voice and facial recognition technologies used in our everyday lives. Furthermore, AI-enhanced technologies and tools are no strangers in the field of education. It is more evident that it is important to prepare K-12 population of students for their future professions as well as citizens capable of understanding and utilizing AI-enhanced technologies in the future. In response to such needs, the authors started a collaborative project aiming to provide a K-12 AI curriculum for Japanese students. However, the authors soon realized that it is important to contextualize the learning experience for the targeted K-12 students. The paper aims at introducing the idea of contextualizing AI education and learning experience of K-12 students with examples and tips using the work-in-progress version of the contextualized curriculum using culturally responsive approaches to promote the awareness and understanding of AI ethics among middle school students.

Previous claims of the number of color categories and corresponding basic color terms in modern Mandarin Chinese remain irreconcilable, mainly due to the shortage in objectively evaluating the basicness of color terms with statistical significance. Therefore the present study applied k-means cluster analysis to investigate native Mandarin Chinese speakers' color naming data of 330 color chips similar to those used in World Color Survey. Results confirmed that there are 11 basic color categories among modern Mandarin speakers in Taiwan, one corresponding to each basic color term. Results also showed that observers overwhelmingly agreed in their use of Mandarin color terms, including those that had yielded ambiguous results in previous studies (gray, brown, pink, and orange). There is significant cross-language similarity when comparing the distribution of color categories in the World Color Survey chart with American English and Japanese data. The motif analysis and group mutual information analysis suggest that Mandarin color terms used in Taiwan describe very similar categories and are, hence, similarly precise in communicating color information as those in Japanese and American English. These results show that three languages of fundamentally different cultures and histories have very similar basic color terms.

This study develops an information-input interface in which a visual stimulus targeted by a user's eye gaze is identified based on the pupillary light reflex to periodic luminance modulations of the object. Experiment 1 examines how pupil size changes in response to periodic luminance modulation of visual stimuli, and the results are used to develop an algorithm for information input. Experiment 2a examines the effectiveness of interfaces with two objects. The results demonstrate that 98% accurate identification of the gaze targeted object is possible if the luminance modulation frequencies of two objects differ by at least 0.12 Hz. Experiment 2b examines the accuracy of a gaze directed information input method based on a keyboard configuration with twelve responses. The results reveal that keyboard input is possible with an average accuracy of 85% for luminance modulation frequencies from 0.75 to 2.75 Hz. The proposed pupillometry based information-input interface offers several advantages, such as low burden on users, minimal invasiveness, no need for training or experience, high theoretical validity, and no need for calibration. Thus, the pupillometry method presented herein has advantages for practical use without requiring the eye's position to be calibrated. Additionally, this method has a potential for the design of interfaces that allow patients with severely limited motor function to communicate with others.

Despite numerous prior studies, important questions about the Japanese color lexicon persist, particularly about the number of Japanese basic color terms and their deployment across color space. Here, 57 native Japanese speakers provided monolexemic terms for 320 chromatic and 10 achromatic Munsell color samples. Through k-means cluster analysis we revealed 16 statistically distinct Japanese chromatic categories. These included eight chromatic basic color terms (aka/red, ki/yellow, midori/green, ao/blue, pink, orange, cha/brown, and murasaki/purple) plus eight additional terms: mizu ("water")/light blue, hada ("skin tone")/peach, kon ("indigo")/dark blue, matcha ("green tea")/yellow-green, enji/maroon, oudo ("sand or mud")/mustard, yamabuki ("globeflower")/gold, and cream. Of these additional terms, mizu was used by 98% of informants, and emerged as a strong candidate for a 12th Japanese basic color term. Japanese and American English color-naming systems were broadly similar, except for color categories in one language (mizu, kon, teal, lavender, magenta, lime) that had no equivalent in the other. Our analysis revealed two statistically distinct Japanese motifs (or color-naming systems), which differed mainly in the extension of mizu across our color palette. Comparison of the present data with an earlier study by Uchikawa & Boynton (1987) suggests that some changes in the Japanese color lexicon have occurred over the last 30 years.

BACKGROUND: Patients with rosacea have increased amounts of cathelicidin and protease activity but their usefulness as disease biomarkers is unclear. OBJECTIVE: We sought to evaluate the effect of doxycycline treatment on cathelicidin expression, protease activity, and clinical response in rosacea. METHODS: In all, 170 adults with papulopustular rosacea were treated for 12 weeks with doxycycline 40-mg modified-release capsules or placebo in a multicenter, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study. Clinical response was compared with cathelicidin and protease activity in stratum corneum samples obtained by tape strip and in skin biopsy specimens obtained from a random subset of patients. RESULTS: Treatment with doxycycline significantly reduced inflammatory lesions and improved investigator global assessment scores compared with placebo. Cathelicidin expression and protein levels decreased over the course of 12 weeks in patients treated with doxycycline. Low levels of protease activity and cathelicidin expression at 12 weeks correlated with treatment success. Low protease activity at baseline was a predictor of clinical response in the doxycycline treatment group. LIMITATIONS: Healthy control subjects were not studied. CONCLUSIONS: Improved clinical outcome correlated with reduced cathelicidin and protease activity, supporting both the mechanism of doxycycline and the potential of these molecules as biomarkers for rosacea.

Katakori is a Japanese word, and there is no clear English translation. Katakori consists of two terms, Kata means neck and shoulder, kori means stiffness. Consequently, Katakori is defined as neck and shoulder discomfort or dull pain. Katakori is a major somatic complaint and has a large impact on workers. To examine the association between onset of severe Katakori and potential risk factors in Japanese workers, a prospective cohort study, entitled "Cultural and Psychosocial Influence on Disability (CUPID)", was conducted. Self-administered questionnaires were distributed twice: at baseline and 1 year after baseline. Logistic regression was used to explore the risk factors of onset of severe Katakori. Of those 1,398, the incidence of severe Katakori onset after 1 year was 3.0% (42 workers). Being female (adjusted odds ratio: 2.39, 95% confidence interval: 1.18-4.86), short sleep duration (adjusted odds ratio: 2.86, 95% confidence interval: 1.20-6.82) and depressed mood with some issues at work (adjusted odds ratio: 3.11, 95% confidence interval: 1.38-7.03) were significantly associated with onset of severe Katakori. Psychosocial factors as well as gender difference were associated with onset of severe Katakori. We suggest that mental health support at the workplace is important to prevent severe Katakori.

Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin disease whose pathophysiological mechanism is still unclear. However, it is known that mast cell (MC) numbers are increased in the dermis of rosacea patients. MC proteases not only recruit other immune cells, which amplify the inflammatory response, but also cause vasodilation and angiogenesis. MCs are also one of the primary sources of cathelicidin LL-37 (Cath LL-37), an antimicrobial peptide that has been shown to be an enabler of rosacea pathogenesis. Here, we demonstrate that MCs are key mediators of cathelicidin-initiated skin inflammation. After Cath LL-37 injection into the dermis, MC-deficient B6.Cg-Kit(W-sh)/HNihrJaeBsmJ (KitW-sh) mice did not develop rosacea-like features. Conversely, chymase (P<0.001), tryptase, and Mmp9 (P<0.01) mRNA levels were significantly higher in C57BL/6 wild-type (WT) mice. Treating WT mice with an MC stabilizer significantly decreased the expressions of Mmp9 and Cxcl2 (P<0.01). Our data were confirmed on erythematotelangiectatic rosacea subjects who showed a decrease in matrix metalloproteinase activity (P<0.05), after 8 weeks of topical cromolyn treatment. We conclude that MCs have a central role in the development of inflammation subsequent to Cath LL-37 activation and that downregulation of activated MCs may be a therapy for rosacea treatment.
