RESUMO

The aim of the present study was to identify factors that are perceived by recovering psychiatric patients as contributing to their relapse. The participants were a convenient sample of out-patients at a psychiatric hospital in Mafikeng, north west South Africa. The sample consisted of 15 males and 15 females, aged 18 to 60 years (mean age = 38.7 years). The research data was collected using a questionnaire and non-structured interview. The results showed that 43 percent of the patients attributed their relapse to inability to adhere to prescribed medical intervention. Patients also attributed relapse to lack of social support (20 percent), grief following the loss of a close family member (20 percent), and lack of employment (17 percent). It is recommended that a more integrated approach aimed at providing effective social support be considered in relapse prevention.

RESUMO

This study was aimed at establishing the extent of blood donation and beliefs about donating blood among high school students in Mmabatho. A random sample of 40 Standard 10 students (20 males, 20 females; mean age = 20.8 years) was selected to participate in the study. A structured questionnaire was used to determined blood donation behaviour and accompanying beliefs. The results showed that although 80 percent of the participants believed that donating blood was important only 17.5 percent had actually ever donated blood. The data also showed that donating blood was a health risk or were uncertain if donating blood was safe. It is recommended that public appeals for blood donors should include information to dispel myths about dangers of donating blood.

RESUMO

Thirty women aged 18 to 50 years (mean age = 28) completed a questionnaire measuring attitudes and knowledge about hysterectomy. The results showed that almost 60 percent of the respondents lacked knowledge about the procedure and that educational level made no significant difference to knowledge about hysterectomy. The data also indicated that many respondents were uncertain about hysterectomy. Analysis of the reasons given for their attitudes showed that many women held unfounded fears about the procedure. It is recommended that efforts be made to change the negative perception of hysterectomy.
