RESUMO

A new species of the genus Parhyale, Stebbing 1897 was collected from the intertidal region of Chilika Lagoon associated with the seaweed Gracilaria sp. Parhyale odian sp. nov. differs from other species of the genus by having a stout robust seta on the surface of the propodus near to dactyl hinge of male gnathopod 1. With the new description of P. odian sp. nov., the global species number in the genus rises to 16.

RESUMO

In coastal regions, Talitrids are found among decaying material in the supralittoral zone of sandy beach, mangroves and delta regions. Five genus and five species of the family Talitridae have been reported so far from Indian coastal waters. A new species of the amphipod genus Talorchestia Dana, 1852, Talorchestia buensis sp. nov. was collected from Kadirabad Char, West Bengal, east coast of India. The species was collected from a sandy beach, beneath dead leaves. The new species can be distinguished from other described species of the genus by the presence of a double rows of setae on the endopod of uropod 2, the presence of more than 10 robust setae in each lobe of the telson, antenna 2 reaching more than half the body length, pereopod 7 longer than pereopod 6 and by the absence of a distal protuberance on the palm of male gnathopod 2. The present article increases the total number of world species in the genus to 26.

RESUMO

A new species of the amphipod genus Quadrivisio Stebbing, 1907, Quadrivisio chilikensis sp. nov. was collected from the Chilika Lagoon, east coast of India. The species was collected from seaweed Chaetomorpha sp.. The new species can be distinguished from other described species of the genus by the presence of a carina on pleonites and urosome, by the flagellum of antenna 2 being twice the length of peduncle article 5 and by pereopods 6 and 7 being equal in length.

RESUMO

The amphipod genus Orchestia is revised. It now includes 10 species of which three are new: O. forchuensis sp. nov. from north-eastern North America and Iceland., O. perezi sp. nov. from Chile and O. tabladoi sp. nov. from Argentina. Orchestia inaequalipes (K.H. Barnard 1951) is reinstated. The type species of the genus, O. gammarellus is redescribed based on material from Fountainstown, Ireland and a neotype is established to stabilize the species. The species was originally described from a garden in Leiden, far from the sea. Its true identity is unknown and no type material exists. Orchestia gammarellus (Pallas, 1776) is shown to be a sibling species group with members in both hemispheres of the temperate Atlantic as well along the Pacific coast of South America. A hypothesis for the establishment of the current distribution of Orchestia species is presented that extends back to the Cretaceous.

RESUMO

Material collected by the Norwegian Scientific Expedition to Tristan Da Cunha in the South Atlantic Ocean in the years 1937-1938 and later attributed by Stephensen, 1949 to Orchestia scutigerula Dana, 1852 has been re-examined and is described as a new genus and species, Gondwanorchestia tristanensis sp. nov. Orchestia scutigerula Dana, 1852 is transferred to Gondwanorchestia gen nov. and compared with G. tristanensis sp. nov.

RESUMO

Two species of the beach-hopper genus Talorchestia Dana, 1853 were collected at Cheriyam Island in the union territory of Lakshadweep in south western India. One species was identified as T. affinis Maccagno, 1936, known previously from the Red Sea, Somalia and East Africa and recorded for the first time from India, the other proved to be a new species, T. lakshadweepensis sp. nov.

RESUMO

A recent comprehensive review of the generic-level classification of the amphipod family Talitridae established 37 new genera (Lowry Myers 2019). Among the 37 genus-group names, however, four names-Fleuria Lowry Myers, 2019, Hurleyella Lowry Myers, 2019, Tasmanella Lowry Myers, 2019 and Wairua Lowry Myers, 2019-are respectively preoccupied by the dipteran Fleuria Kieffer, 1924, the dipteran Hurleyella Runyon Robinson, 2010, the brachiopod Tasmanella Laurie, 1991, and the arachnid Wairua Forster in Forster et al., 1990. Accordingly, new replacement names for each of the talitrid genus-group names are proposed herein. Additionally, the authorship of the superfamily Talitroidea cited in Lowry Myers (2019) as Bulycheva, 1957, should be cited as Rafinesque, 1815.

RESUMO

A new monotypic genus of aorid amphipod Propejanice gen. nov. is described and figured from material collected in Brazil. The single species, P. lagamarensis sp. nov. was collected from artificial plates suspended in the sea in Paraná and Sao Paulo States, Brazil. The new genus appears to be morphologically closest to the genus Janice Griffiths, 1973 from Moçambique, from which it differs in the carpochelate male gnathopod 1. Both genera are phylogenetically close to the genus Grandidierella Coutière, 1904.

RESUMO

A new species of Grandidierella Coutière, 1904, G. nioensis is described from the east coast of India. It is close to G. mahafalensis Coutière, 1904, from Madagascar and G. halophilus Wongkamhaeng, Pholpunthin Azman, 2012 from Thailand. A key is provided to facilitate the identification of species in the Grandidierella mahafalensis Coutière, 1904 species-complex.

RESUMO

A new species of amphipod, Elasmopus sivaprakasami sp. nov., is described from India. It is found to be conspecific with material described from southern India nearly fifty years previously, but attributed at that time to a species described from Japan.

RESUMO

A response is given to criticisms in a recent paper of the validity of the amphipod suborder Senticaudata. The tacitly assumed status of truth implied in some molecular higher phylogenies is called in to question.

RESUMO

Fourteen species of amphipod are recorded as endocommensal with the sponges Coelocarteria singaporensis, Coscinoderma mathewsi and Ircinia microconulosa on the Great Barrier Reef. The genus Leucothoe is represented by three new species, one specific to each of the three sponges. Hyperadult males of Aoroides parvus Myers are also described.

RESUMO

12 species of amphipod in 5 families, collected from shallow reefs in Palau by S. DeGrave during 2002, are reported here. Of these, five species are new to science and Microdeutopus tridens Schellenberg (1938) is redescribed and transferred to the genus Bemlos Shoemaker (1925). The collection included several additional species in the genera Amphilochus Bate, 1862, Ampithoe Leach (1814), Bemlos, Byblis Boeck (1871), Colomastix Grube (1861) and Notopoma Lowry & Berents (1996), that were either incomplete or juvenile and could therefore not adequately be described. In addition, two new species of Plumithoe Barnard & Karaman (1991) are erected from the literature. Other families collected in Palau will be considered in later contributions.
