RESUMO

Most supercooled non-polymeric glass-forming melts exhibit a shear thinning phenomenon, i.e., viscosity decreases with increasing the strain rate. On compressing borosilicate glasses at high temperature, however, we discovered an interesting oscillatory viscous flow and identified it as a typical relaxation oscillation caused by the peculiar structure of borosilicate glass. Specifically, the micro-structure of borosilicate glass can be divided into borate network and silicate network. Under loading, deformation is mainly localized in the borate network via a transformation from the three coordinated planar boron to trigonal boron that could serve as a precursor for the subsequent formation of a BO4 tetrahedron, while the surrounding silicate network is acting as a stabilization/relaxation agent. The formation of stress oscillation was further described and explained by a new physics-based constitutive model.

RESUMO

This paper explores the evolution mechanisms of metastable phases during the nanoindentation on monocrystalline silicon. Both the molecular dynamics (MD) and the in situ scanning spreading resistance microscopy (SSRM) analyses were carried out on Si(100) orientation, and for the first time, experimental verification was achieved quantitatively at the same nanoscopic scale. It was found that under equivalent indentation loads, the MD prediction agrees extremely well with the result experimentally measured using SSRM, in terms of the depth of the residual indentation marks and the onset, evolution and dimension variation of the metastable phases, such as beta-Sn. A new six-coordinated silicon phase, Si-XIII, transformed directly from Si-I was discovered. The investigation showed that there is a critical size of contact between the indenter and silicon, beyond which a crystal particle of distorted diamond structure will emerge in between the indenter and the amorphous phase upon unloading.

RESUMO

Li, Yeh, and Taube in 1993 (J. Am. Chem. Soc. 1993, 115, 10384) synthesized a number of complexes which can be formally regarded as protonated Os(II) species. Some of these were paramagnetic, in contrast to the diamagnetism of the closed shell 5d(6) Os(II) ions. This intriguing phenomenon is investigated theoretically using density functional theory. The geometries, stabilities, and electronic structures of a series of six- and seven-coordinate osmium complexes were studied in gas phase and aqueous solution using the B3P86 functional, in conjunction with the isodensity-polarized continuum model of solvation. The general formula for these complexes is [Os(NH(3))(4)H(L(1)(x)())(m)()(L(2)(y)())(n)()](()(x)()(+)(y)()(+3)+), where L(1) and L(2) = H(2)O, NH(3), CH(3)OH, CH(3)CN, Cl(-), and CN(-), which could be regarded as protonated Os(II) species or hydrides of Os(IV), although according to this work the osmium-hydrogen interaction is best described as a covalent Os(III)-H bond, in which the hydrogen is near-neutral. The ground states are generally found to be singlets, with low-lying triplet excited states. Solvation tends to favor the singlet states by as much as approximately 18 kcal mol(-)(1) in the 3+ ions, an effect which is proportional to the corresponding difference in molecular volumes. To have realistic estimates of the importance of spin-orbit coupling in these systems, the spin-orbit energy corrections were computed for triplet [Os(NH(3))(4)](2+), [Os(NH(3))(4)H](3+), and [Os(NH(3))(4)H(H(2)O)](3+), along with gas-phase Os and its ions as well as [Os(H(2)O)(6)](3+). The seven-coordinate triplet-state complex [Os(NH(3))(5)H(CH(3)OH)](3+), which had been successfully isolated by Li, Yeh, and Taube, is predicted to be a stable six-coordinate complex which strongly binds to a methanol molecule in the second coordination shell. The calculations further suggest that the singlet-triplet splitting would be very small, a few kilocalories per mole at most. The geometries and the electronic structures of the complexes are interpreted and rationalized in terms of Pauling's hybridization model in conjunction with conventional ligand field theory that effectively precludes the existence of true seven-coordinate triplet-state complexes of the above formula.

RESUMO

The signal processing used in an ultrasonic high-rangeability gas flow meter using times of flight is presented. The flow meter under discussion uses a combination of continuous wave and chirp signals to measure at low flow velocities, below 20 m/s, and chirp signals alone to measure high flow velocities, above 20 m/s. Because of the need for a pulse compression technique in the signal waveform design the technique of pulse compression and the choice of signal waveforms are discussed. The advantages and disadvantages of amplitude weighting vis-a-vis frequency domain manipulations of the waveforms are also discussed. To eliminate spurious times of flight, a special filtering technique is used, based on assessing the gradient of ascendingly ordered time series of time-of-flight measurements. A summary of user experience with high-rangeability gas flow meters in use on different offshore platforms and in refineries is given. Long-term tests that examined the accuracy of the high-rangeability flow meter are also described.

RESUMO

14C triolein breath tests are highly sensitive in detecting fat malabsorption in adults, but experience in the elderly is sparse. We have evaluated 48 'normal' subjects over the age of 65 years and compared the results with those of 46 normal subjects under 65 from a previous study. Results were calculated as eight hour cumulative values and expressed as percentages of the administered dose. Reference ranges have been calculated separately for the following age groups: 65 years or less (201 to 460), 66 to 75 (182 to 405) and over 75 (141 to 336). A clear age related decline in eight hour cumulative values was noted. The values fell by 23% between the ages of 17 and 65 years and by 25% between the ages of 65 and 87 years. Pancreatic insufficiency or bacterial colonisation of the small bowel is unlikely, but delayed intestinal absorption or the effects of slower metabolic rate cannot be excluded. This test is simple and practicable in the elderly and the study emphasises the importance of age in the interpretation of results.

RESUMO

A transit-time ultrasonic gas flowmeter for high-rangeability requirements, such as those encountered in flare-gas flow-metering, is presented. The concept of ray rescue angle for the orientation of the ultrasonic transducers in single-beam transit-time ultrasonic flowmeters is introduced to overcome the problem of ultrasonic beam drift in high-velocity flows. To overcome problems associated with noise at high velocities, a chirp signal is used. To preserve the accuracy of the meter at low velocities near zero flow, a combination of chirp and continuous-wave signals is used to interrogate the flow. Overall system performance is presented, based on results from extensive wind-tunnel tests.

RESUMO

The absorption of 14C triolein in a standard fat meal was measured in 60 controls and 66 patients with gastrointestinal disorders by 14CO2 breath sampling. A reference range based upon cumulative eight hour values of the controls was independent of height, weight, and sex. The range was of log normal distribution and declined with age (p less than 0.05). Acceptable 'within-day' and 'between-day' reproducibility was found. All patients tested with untreated coeliac disease, pancreatic insufficiency and most with symptomatic small intestinal Crohn's disease had subnormal values. Twenty per cent of those with irritable bowel syndrome had subnormal values. Patients with ulcerative colitis were all normal. The reagents used and the breath samples after collection were stable. In our experience the 14C triolein test is simple, inexpensive, and helpful in the detection of diseases associated with fat malabsorption. It is of value in monitoring the response to treatment of individual patients with coeliac disease.
