RESUMO

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a crucial impact on lifestyle worldwide. In this way, many studies have been presented, leading to continuous revaluation and questioning of conducts and concepts. Such is the case of the Chinese study suggesting that the new coronavirus has the potential to code anomalous nonstructural proteins capable of dissociating the iron atom from the porphyrin structure, contributing significantly to the characteristic hypoxemia conditions of the disease. Considering the potential impacts of those findings, the current study aims to evaluate and measure the dissociation curve of oxy-hemoglobin in COVID-19 patients. The project consists of a retrospective cohort study with data regarding oximetry and hemoglobin levels collected from digital patients records. The correlation between the measures and estimated values by Spearmen test was 0.843 (P < .001). A multiple linear regression model was applied using measured SO2 as a predicted variable and hemoglobin, PO2, and pH levels as predictors. The coefficients were pH 0.16-0.31 (P < .001); PO2 0.52-0.66 (P < .001) and Hb 0.088-0.059 (P = .706). Despite its limitations, the present study suggests that, at least in situations of clinical severity, the proposed mechanism does not appear to be universal or to have a significant clinical impact.

BACKGROUND: Rotavirus vaccines created the opportunity to control diarrhea in children. We describe the rotavirus genotypes before and after the rotavirus vaccine introduction in Brazil. METHODS: We reviewed the distribution of rotavirus genotypes in Brazil before and after vaccine introduction by searching publication. RESULTS: Eighty-six studies reported 6884 (15.2%) rotavirus episodes among 45,305 children. Rotavirus caused 22.4% and 11.6% of cases before and after vaccine introduction. G1P[8], G9P[8] and G2P[4] heterotypic strains were most common before and after vaccine introduction. CONCLUSIONS: The vaccines may have selected heterotypic strains in this highly vaccinated population.

INTRODUCTION: Some viruses of the Herpesviridae family are frequently the etiologic agents of oral lesions associated with HIV. The aim of this study was to identify the presence of herpes simplex virus types 1 and 2 (HSV-1, HSV-2), Varicella Zoster virus (VZV), Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), human cytomegalovirus (HCMV), human herpesvirus type 6, type 7 and type 8 (HHV-6, HHV-7 and HHV-8) in the oral cavity of HIV-infected children/adolescents and verify the association between viral subtypes and clinical factors. METHODS: The cells of oral mucosa were collected from 50 HIV infected children/adolescents, 3-13 years old (mean age 8.66). The majority (66%) of selected were girls, and they were all outpatients at the pediatric AIDS clinic of a public hospital in Rio de Janeiro. Nested-PCR was used to identify the viral types. RESULTS: Absence of immunosuppression was observed in 66% of the children. Highly active antiretroviral therapy (HAART) was used by 72.1% of selected and moderate viral load was observed in 56% of the children/adolescents. Viral types were found in 86% of the children and the subtypes were: HSV-1 (4%), HSV-2 (2%), VZV (4%), EBV (0%), HCMV (24%), HHV6 (18%), HHV-7 (68%), HHV8 (0%). CONCLUSIONS: The use of HAART has helped to reduce oral lesions, especially with herpes virus infections. The health professionals who work with these patients should be aware of such lesions because of their predictive value and the herpes virus can be found circulating in the oral cavity without causing lesions.

Iodine incorporation into thyroglobulin is dependent on the activities of both thyroperoxidase (TPO) and thyroid dual oxidase 2 (DuOx2). Although TPO expression is decreased in some thyroid nodular lesions, DuOx1 and 2 mRNA expressions are maintained, but DuOx H2O2-generating activity has never been evaluated in such tumors. Our goal was to determine DuOx activity in hypofunctioning lesions of the thyroid. We evaluated H2O2 generation by DuOx in 12 paranodular to cold nodule samples, 17 non-toxic multinodular goiters (MNG; 33 samples), 3 papillary carcinomas (PC; 4 samples), 3 follicular carcinomas (FC; 4 samples), and 10 follicular adenomas. DuOx activity was detected in all paranodular tissues (121+/-23 nmol H2O2/h per mg protein), but was undetectable (<1 nmol H2O2 generated) in all PC, two out of four FC samples and seven out of ten adenomas. In 11 MNG at least two different areas of the goiter have been evaluated, and in 5 of these goiters one of the samples had DuOx activity below the limit of detection. The coefficient of variation in MNG samples ranged from 11.3 to 57.2%. Interestingly, in all the adenomas studied, TPO activity (486+/-142 U/g protein, n=8) was well within the range found in paranodular tissues (414+/-116 U/g protein, n=3). We found a significant negative correlation between DuOx and TPO activities, suggesting that these enzymes are regulated in opposite directions, at least in thyroid tumors.
