RESUMO

A TiO2-modified carbon (C-TiO2) has been employed as a catalyst support of Pd3Co alloy for electroduction of oxygen. Due to the strong interaction between highly dispersed TiO2 and Pd3Co alloy, the C-TiO2 support was shown to be effective for a fine dispersion of Pd3Co alloys. The degree of sintering of Pd3Co on C-TiO2 could largely decrease during heat-treatment for reduction compared to that on unmodified carbon support (C). In oxygen reduction reaction (ORR), the reduced catalysts (Pd3Co/C-X and Pd3Co/C-TiO2-X; X represents reduction temperature) showed higher catalytic performance than their as-prepared catalysts. The catalytic activities of Pd3Co/C-TiO2-X were largely enhanced compared to those of Pd3Co/C-X. The ORR activity was measured to be the highest on Pd3Co/C-TiO2-300, which was 9 times enhanced activity (at 0.85 V) relative to the best-performed catalyst supported on carbon (Pd3Co/C-400). A positive role of TiO2 for the metal dispersion, the retardation of metal growth during heat-treatment, and the modification of electronic structure of Pd3Co was responsible for the enhanced ORR performance on Pd3Co/C-TiO2-X.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to test the null hypothesis that there is no difference in the alveolar bone thickness, bone loss or incidence of fenestrations between upper and lower incisors in skeletal Class I bidentoalveolar protrusive patients before orthodontic treatment. METHODS: Three-dimensional (3D) cone beam CT (CBCT) images were taken of 24 patients from the Republic of Korea (17 females and 7 males). Reformatted CBCT images were used to measure labial and lingual alveolar bone thickness (ABT) of the 4 upper incisors and 4 lower incisors of the 24 patients (total n = 192 incisors) at every 1/10 of root length (Level 0, cementoenamel junction (CEJ) area; Level 10, root apex area) as well as alveolar bone area (ABA) and alveolar bone loss (%BL) rate to dental root length. The numbers of fenestration teeth were also tallied. RESULTS: All anterior teeth were supported by <1 mm of ABT on the labial surfaces up to root length Level 8. ABA was statistically greater on the lingual aspect than the labial aspect in lower incisors. The %BL was 26.98% in the lower labial region, 19.27% in upper labial aspect and most severe on the lower lingual plate 31.25% compared with the labial plate. There were no significant differences in %BL between subgroups when categorized by sex or age. Fenestrations were 1.37 times more frequent on lower incisors (37) than upper incisors (27). CONCLUSION: The null hypothesis was rejected, confirming that incisor periodontal support is poor and alveolar bone loss is severe even prior to the start of orthodontic treatment. Careful diagnosis using 3D CBCT images is needed to avoid iatrogenic degeneration of periodontal support around anterior teeth, particularly in the lower lingual bone plate region.

RESUMO

This summary focuses on reducing nitrogen (N) and ammonia emissions from poultry manure through the use of improved amino acid digestibilities and enzyme supplementation. Proper feed processing techniques, phase feeding, and the minimization of feed and water waste can contribute to additional minor reductions in these emissions. Reductions in environmental pollution can be achieved through improved diet formulation based on available nutrients in the ingredients, reducing crude protein (CP) levels and adding synthetic amino acids. Use of amino acid and CP digestibilities can reduce N excretion up to 40% and a 25% increase in N digestibility can be achieved with enzyme supplementation in broiler diets. Digestibilities can be measured by two methods: the excreta and ileal amino acid digestibilities. Both methods allow amino acid levels to be reduced by 10% or more. Enzyme supplementation decreases intestinal viscosity, improves metabolizable energy levels, and increases amino acid digestibilities. Many feed manufacturers still use total amino acid content to formulate feeds. To meet amino acid requirements, crystalline amino acids are needed. The use of feather, meat and bone meal must not be overestimated or underestimated and the limiting amino acids such as cystine, tryptophan, and threonine must be carefully analyzed.

RESUMO

The expression of human complement regulatory proteins (CRP) and H-transferase (HT) in porcine cells is one of the strategies for suppression of hyperacute rejection (HAR) of xenotransplants in human recipients. In this study, we investigated the inhibitory effect of combined expression of human complement regulators and HT on human serum-mediated cytolysis in porcine embryonic fibroblasts. For the combinated expression of human CRPs in transformed pig cells, cDNAs of human DAF, MCP, and CD59 were cloned into the same insertional plasmid under the control of pCMV IE and LTR. The double combination of CRPs, hDAF-hMCP, and hMCP-hCD59 survived over 50% in the presence of 50% human serum, compared to the control. Moreover, the cell viability was increased more than 65% and 80% in the combination of human DAF-CD59 and DAF-MCP-CD59, respectively. In addition, the combination of HT gene to hDAF-hCD59 vector increased the viability close to 80%, similar to the triple combination of CRPs. These observations suggest that the combined expression of human CRPs and HT in the same insertional vector may be more effective in protecting porcine cells from human complement-mediated cytolysis.

RESUMO

The effects of 6 different litter amendments on broiler performance, level of atmospheric ammonia (NH3) concentration, and soluble reactive phosphorus (SRP) in litter was determined. Through 3 experiments conducted on 2 different commercial farms, one chemical amendment was added to the litter and then was compared with a control. Broiler performance was not affected by any of the amendments except the ferrous sulfate amendment for which mortality was 25.5%. Application of aluminum chloride (AlCl3 x 6H2O) to the litter lowered atmospheric ammonia concentrations at 42 d by 97.2%, whereas ferrous sulfate (FeSO4 x 7H2O) lowered it by 90.77%. Ammonia concentrations were reduced by 86.18, 78.66, 75.52, and 69.00% by aluminum sulfate [alum or Al2(SO4)3 x 14H2O)], alum + CaCO3, aluminum chloride + CaCO3, and potassium permanganate (KMnO4), respectively, when compared with each control at 42 d. Each amendment except KMnO4 significantly reduced SRP contents. Alum and aluminum chloride were the effective compounds evaluated on the commercial farms with respect to reducing ammonia contents, phosphorus solubility, and mortality.

RESUMO

The medical history, in combination with the physical examination and a 12-lead electrocardiogram, plays a key role in the diagnosis and risk stratification of patients with syncope. However, diagnostic clinical criteria are not uniformly applied. In older studies, the diagnostic criteria for vasovagal or reflex syncope often included typical precipitating events and warning symptoms. More recent studies have documented that a variety of unrecognized stressors can trigger reflex syncope and that warning signs and symptoms may be minimal. A characteristic medical history (a trigger and/or prodromi) is enough to diagnose reflex syncope if the risk for a cardiac cause of syncope is low (e. g. patients < 65 yrs, without a history of heart disease and no ECG abnormalities). In elderly subjects with a higher risk of cardiac syncope, the yield of the medical history is lower. However, a prospective study of the value of the medical history for the diagnosis of syncope with long-term follow-up has not been performed.

RESUMO

Cost-effective diagnostic approaches to reflex syncope require knowledge of its frequency and causes in different age groups. For this purpose we reviewed the available literature dealing with the epidemiology of reflex syncope. The incidence pattern of reflex syncope in the general population and general practice is bimodal with peaks in teenagers and in the elderly. In the young almost all cases of transient loss of consciousness are due to reflex syncope. The life-time cumulative incidence in young females ( congruent with 50 %) is about twice as high as in males ( congruent with 25 %). In the elderly, cardiac causes, orthostatic and postprandial hypotension, and the effects of medications are common, whereas typical vasovagal syncope is less frequent. In emergency departments, cardiac causes and orthostatic hypotension are more frequent especially in elderly subjects. Reflex syncope, however, remains the most common cause of syncope, but all-cause mortality in subjects with reflex syncope is not higher than in the general population. This knowledge about the epidemiology of reflex syncope can serve as a benchmark to develop cost-effective diagnostic approaches.

RESUMO

The effects of several vanadates (ie, orthovanadate, pervanadate, and two stable peroxovanadium compounds) on basal and insulin-stimulated 2-DG transport in insulin target and nontarget cell lines are reported, herein. In nontarget cells, exposure to vanadates (5 x 10(-6) to 10(-4) mol/L) resulted in 2-DG transport stimulatory responses similar to those observed in 2-DG transport post exposure to 667 nmol/L insulin alone, or insulin in combination with vanadates. In 3T3-L1 adipocytes and L6 myotubes, exposure to a vanadate compound or 67 nmol/L insulin, stimulated 2-DG transport dramatically. Again, this effect on stimulated transport was similar to 2-DG transport post-treatment with the effective vanadates in combination with insulin. While pervanadate or stable peroxovanadates stimulated 2-DG transport at 10(-5) to 10(-6) mol/L, orthovanadate up to 10(-4) mol/L was not effective in stimulating 2-DG transport in any of the cell lines tested. The data indicate that the various peroxovanadates are clearly superior insulin mimetics while a more limited insulin mimesis is observed with orthovanadate over a wide variety of cell types.

RESUMO

A total of 150 ostrich eggs was collected from two commercial ostrich farms. The eggs were brushed to remove soil and placed into one storage area (15.51 to 15.56 C without controlling humidity) for different periods of time (up to 19 d) before being incubated. After storage, the eggs were kept for 12 h at room temperature, and then washed, disinfected, and dried before being placed into a commercial incubator to determine the effect of length of storage on hatchability. The two supply farms varied by 11.1% in hatchability. The weight of eggs stored for the same lengths of time was not significantly different (P > or = 0.05) between hatched and unhatched eggs. Hatchabilities of ostrich eggs were not affected by days of storage up to 19 d at 15.51 to 15.56 C without controlling the humidity level but, rather, by the amount of weight loss during incubation.

RESUMO

We report the effects of added acid in the reaction of singlet oxygen with trans-4-propenylanisole (1). We provide evidence that solvent acidity modifies the behavior of the transient intermediates. Relative to reactions in aprotic solvent, enhanced dioxetane concentrations are observed in MeOH and in nonprotic solvents with acid. We suggest a new mechanism that invokes a proton transfer from MeOH and benzoic acid to perepoxide (2) and zwitterion (3) intermediates.

RESUMO

1. The effect of caecectomy on nitrogen utilisation and excretion was examined in growing chicks fed on a commercial diet. 2. Caecectomy had no significant effect on food intake or body weight gain. 3. Caecectomy caused significantly higher moisture content in excreta (P<0.01). 4. Gastrointestinal passage time of digesta was significantly shorter in caecectomised chicks than in control chicks (P<0.05). 5. Caecectomy tended to improve nitrogen utilisation rate in growing chicks. 6. The treatment significantly decreased uric acid excretion (P<0.01) and excretory uric acid-N/total nitrogen excretion (P<0.01). 7. It is concluded that the effects of caecectomy on nitrogen metabolism in growing chicks are similar to those in adult chickens.

RESUMO

A series of novel cephalosporin compounds which have 3-[(aminopyrimidiniumyl)thio]methyl substituents was synthesized. They show high antimicrobial activity against various bacterial species including Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Structure-activity relationships with various thiopyrimidines, thiopyrimidiniums, bicyclic thiotriazolopyrimidiniums, and bicyclic thioimidazolopyrimidiniums as 3'-substituents were also studied; cephalosporins with quarternized pyrimidinium moieties have better antimicrobial activities than neuteral pyrimidine cephalosporins, and stabilization of the positive charge on the pyrimidinium moieties is essential for better activity. According to semiempirical PM3 calculations, amino and alkylthio substituents on the pyrimidinium rings play a major role in charge stabilization and delocalization.

RESUMO

Three models have been developed to describe light scattering from a sphere in contact with a mirror. With two of the models the mirror was replaced with an image sphere. Light scattering from each sphere is assumed to follow the Mie theory: no further interaction between the sphere and mirror is assumed. The models differ in their consideration of the interaction of scattered fields from the spheres. The results of the models are compared to experimental values obtained for polystyrene spheres, 0.984 microm in diameter, with incident radiation lambda= 0.6328 and 0.4416 microm. The comparison indicates that a best fit can be obtained by assuming that the real sphere and its image sphere are coherent light sources with a phase difference of pi.

RESUMO

Studies were conducted to evaluate the effects of cellulase from Trichoderma viride in a diet for broilers containing high levels of wheat bran. Broiler-type, mixed-sex chicks were fed from 3 to 8 weeks of age. Wheat bran was added at 0, 10, and 20% levels. A fourth group received the 20% wheat bran plus the cellulase enzyme added at the level of .008%. A portion of the chicks was used in a digestibility study with chromic oxide as an indicator. The summarized data showed that cellulose treatment had a significant effect on reducing feed consumption (P less than .01) and an apparent effect in improving feed-to-gain ratio. Cellulase supplementation significantly improved the digestibility of cell wall components (P less than .01). Calcium, phosphorus, iron, zinc, and copper associated with cell walls were solubilized by cellulase. Iron balance was negative in the groups without cellulase; however, iron, which is bound by the bran, apparently was made available for absorption by cellulase.

RESUMO

The effects of primycin on mitochondrial respiration, volume changes, ATPase activity and the acidification following ATP hydrolysis were studied. Primycin in concentrations below 2--3 nmoles/mg mitochondrial protein reacts only with energized mitochondria rendering their inner membrane permeable to K+, Na+, Tris+ but not to TEA+. Above this concentration primycin interacts both with energized and deenergized mitochondria and the inner membrane also becomes permeable for H+, Cl- but not for ATP. In this case mitochondria very probably lose Mg2+. It is concluded that primycin up to concentrations of 2--3 nmoles/mg mitochondrial protein acts like an ionophore, while at higher concentrations it changes the permeability properties of the mitochondrial inner membrane without a drastic alteration of the membrane itself.
