RESUMO

Aim: To evaluate and compare the shear bond strength (SBS) of Embrace WetBondTM (EWS) Pit and Fissure Sealant (PF sealants) with or without the use of a universal dental adhesive system ScotchbondTM Universal Adhesive (SBU) using different bonding and curing protocols and to assess and compare the mode of failure as determined by visualization of the fractured surfaces of the test specimens after shear testing under an optical microscope at a magnification of 20×. Materials and methods: A total of 85 samples were prepared for testing SBS on enamel on caries-free, extracted permanent human molars. The specimens were randomly divided into five groups based on different bonding and curing protocols. A knife-edge blade in a universal testing machine was used to perform the SBS test with a crosshead speed of 1 mm/minute. Then the mode of failure was assessed. Statistical analysis: Results were analyzed using a one-way analysis of variance with Tukey's post hoc test and Chi-squared test. A probability value 0.05 (p ≤ 0.01) was regarded as significant. Results: ScotchbondTM Universal Adhesive (SBU) in total-etch (TE) mode/etch-and-rinse (ER) mode with individual light curing of the sealant and adhesive showed the highest SBS to enamel (5.40 ± 2.51 MPa). A predominance of cohesive mode of failure was observed for all the test groups. Conclusion: Embrace WetBondTM (EWS) PF sealants with SBU in the ER mode of application, with either curing mode, can be used as an alternative to a conventional technique for sealant placement for improving interfacial bond strength to enhance sealant retention and efficacy. AIM: The following case report discusses the diagnostic dilemma presented by and the multidisciplinary management of a patient with chronic atypical facial pain of psychogenic origin. BACKGROUND: Though oral health care professionals are primarily concerned with the treatment of somatic disorders of the orofacial region, there remains a particularly challenging need to identify, diagnose and treat various psychological and psychosomatic symptoms. CASE DESCRIPTION: This case report describes the management of a 13-year-old male patient with the chief complaint of pain and discoloration of the skin over the right side of the face for the last 5 months, who also demonstrated symptoms of chronic anxiety and social withdrawal. As no associated soft or hard tissue abnormalities could be identified, a diagnosis of atypical/psychogenic facial pain was established. The skin discoloration was diagnosed as pityriasis versicolor and treatment for the same commenced. Following the complete resolution of the skin lesion the patient was asymptomatic, and no longer anxious. CONCLUSION: Our role as dentists is to mitigate the suffering of patients and to improve their quality of life in collaboration with specialists in psychosomatic medicine. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: This case highlights that dentists must be trained to treat not only teeth, but also attend to patient's psychosomatic symptoms. AIMS AND OBJECTIVES: The present study was conducted with the aim of evaluating the effectiveness of a Primary Preventive Dental Health Education Programme conducted for 6-12-year-old primary school children in Mysore City. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 12 schools, one each in the category of Government, Aided, and Unaided, were randomly selected per zone viz., North, South, East, and West. These 12 schools constituted the study group where the Primary Preventive School Dental Health Education Programme (PPSDHEP) was implemented. Two additional schools were selected at random from the four zones to serve as the control. A total of 926 children participated in the study. The PPSDHEP involved the second-level transfer of preventive package wherein the oral health education was imparted to the school children by schoolteachers trained by the investigator. Among the parameters for evaluating the outcome of the programme were the pre and post-programme assessment (at the baseline and at follow-up, i.e., after 6 months) of knowledge, attitude, and practice (KAP), dental caries status, oral hygiene, and gingival health status. RESULTS: The results suggest that the PPSDHEP resulted in bringing about an enhancement in the KAP towards oral health and also an improvement in dental caries, oral hygiene, and gingival health status of the school children in the study group. CONCLUSION: The present study supports the implementation of similar programmes in schools and the contention that schoolteachers are suitable personnel for imparting dental health education to school children on a regular basis.

Numerous publications have reported revascularization of necrotic immature permanent teeth, but the regenerative potential of pulp in mature teeth has rarely been considered. Platelet-rich plasma (PRP) meets many requirements of a scaffold for regenerative endodontics. To the best of our knowledge, no clinical study has evaluated PRP for endodontic regeneration in a mature avulsed tooth. The present case evaluated PRP for pulpal regeneration in an avulsed mature incisor (>8 hours extraoral dry time) of an 11-year-old boy after delayed replantation. The canal was disinfected after extraoral access cavity preparation and pulp extirpation. The root apex was enlarged, and the tooth was placed in doxycycline solution for 20 minutes. After tooth replantation and splinting, PRP was injected up to the level of the cementoenamel junction and sealed with glass ionomer cement. The 6-month follow-up revealed evidence of internal and external root resorption with periapical radiolucency and an apparent periodontal ligament space. Access was reopened; slurry of 2 antibiotics (minocycline and metronidazole) was inserted into the canal and sealed. Nine- and 12-month radiographs revealed resolution of periapical radiolucency with no further progression of internal resorption. The tooth showed a positive response to thermal and electric pulp tests. The findings observed in this case warrant further research under controlled conditions to evaluate endodontic and periodontal regeneration in a tooth that would otherwise be expected to have an unfavorable prognosis.
