RESUMO

Infectious scleritis is rare and most commonly herpetic in origin. We report an unusual bilateral subacute presentation of scleritis with uveitis and glaucoma which responded to treatment with acyclovir. A 47-year-old male coast guard personnel presented with 2 months history of bilateral red eye. He was initially managed elsewhere as conjunctivitis, and on examination had bilateral diffuse redness of the eyes persisting with phenylephrine, with scleral edema and mild globe tenderness. Investigations for underlying autoimmune systemic illness were normal. He showed inadequate response to topical steroids and cycloplegics and developed uveitis and glaucoma while on steroids. He was then given tablet acyclovir with antiglaucoma topical medications with which he showed rapid response and complete resolution. The case is being reported for highlighting this unusual bilateral presentation of scleritis with uveitis and glaucoma with possible viral etiology.

RESUMO

A study was conducted in the Muttom-Mandaikadu coastal region, which is among the profitable coastal sectors in Tamil Nadu, to find the groundwater potential as well as its quality by an integrated geospatial, geophysical and geochemical approach. The GIS-based weighted overlay analysis was used to merge five thematic layers to create the groundwater potential zone map. The geophysical resistivity survey was performed in the study area at 26 stations by applying Schlumberger vertical electrical sounding technique. The observed data were inverted to develop a subsurface lithology model and its electrical properties using one-dimensional software AGI Earth Imager. The combined vertical electrical sounding result and remote sensing thematic maps have exposed the potential zone of groundwater in the study area. From the inferred results, it was observed that 20.8% of the area has ample groundwater potential and 7.7% of the area has scanty groundwater potential. The saltwater intrusion zone had been predicted by validating aquifer resistivity with Dar-Zarrouck (D-Z) parameter. From the geophysical and geochemical interpreted results, it was found that aquifers in 34.6% of the study area are vulnerable to saline contamination. The 4-D model with integrated groundwater quantity and quality suggests that the study area's Western part falls under excellent-to-good groundwater potential zone and excellent water quality.

RESUMO

In this present study, a hybrid Chi-Fe3O4 was prepared, characterised and evaluated for its antibacterial and antibiofilm potential against Staphylococcus aureus and Staphylococcus marcescens bacterial pathogens. Intense peak around 260 nm in the ultraviolet-visible spectrum specify the formation of magnetite nanoparticles. Spherical-shaped particles with less agglomeration and particle size distribution of 3.78-46.40 nm were observed using transmission electron microscopy analysis and strong interaction of chitosan with the surface of magnetite nanoparticles was studied using field emission scanning microscopy (FESEM). X-ray diffraction analysis exhibited the polycrystalline and spinel structure configuration of the nanocomposite. Presence of Fe and O, C and Cl elements were confirmed using energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopic analysis showed the reduction and formation of Chi-Fe3O4 nanocomposite. The antibacterial activity by deformation of the bacterial cell walls on treatment with Chi-Fe3O4 nanocomposite and its interaction was visualised using FESEM and the antibiofilm activity was determined using antibiofilm assay. In conclusion, this present study shows the green synthesis of Chi-Fe3O4 nanocomposite and evaluation of its antibacterial and antibiofilm potential, proving its significance in medical and biological applications.

RESUMO

The present study was carried out to assess the drinking water quality and aquifer characteristics of the Valliyar river basin in Kanyakumari district. 71 groundwater samples were collected and analyzed to understand the quality of water based on the index parameters. 23 vertical electrical soundings (VES) were conducted to understand the subsurface characteristics and their impact on the quality of water. The VES data suggested that the subsurface lithology consist of three distinct layers. The water quality index (WQI) showed that 25% of the samples falling under excellent water and 51% of the samples were classified as good water and another 24% belong in the poor water category.
