Groundwater is one of the most important sources of drinking and irrigation water in arid and semi-arid areas. This study aimed to investigate the chemical quality of groundwater for drinking and irrigation, assess the non-carcinogenic risk factors resulting from the concentration of fluoride and nitrate ions, and analyze the sensitivity among children, teenagers, and adults using Monte Carlo method. A total of 171 samples were obtained from confined groundwater in Arsanjan. Among other hydrological parameters of water, EC had the highest average (1135.97). TDS ranged from 67.90 to 1878.30 mg/L, with the lowest and highest total hardness values being 2.90 and 680.8, respectively. The water quality index (WQI) results indicated that 33% of the samples were at the poor water level and the irrigation (IWQI) was less than 25 in 96.36% of the samples, which were categorized as excellent. Thus, the majority of the samples were suitable for irrigation purposes. Additionally, the oral and dermal health risks of fluoride and nitrate were less than 1 in all age groups. Concentration factor was the main indicator in the assessment of the non-carcinogenic risk factors of nitrate and fluoride. The results of sensitivity analysis revealed a reverse relationship with body weight. Further, the results of principal component analysis (PCA) showed a negative relationship between fluoride concentration and pH. Hierarchical cluster analysis also showed that the study variables belonged to three main clusters. Some elements in C1 were also found in the first factor in PCA. The elements in C2 were among the dominant compounds of the groundwater resources of the study area, which may be caused by earth cations or human activities. C3 variables may also be one of the consequences of fertilizer use in areas around groundwater sources.

BACKGROUND: Autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is gaining increasing use as a wound healing promoter in a variety of clinical settings, including dentistry. Fresh PRP is often used, necessitating daily draws. The present study investigates the possibility of using stored PRP without having to freeze it by storing PRP under variable conditions and assessing growth factor release as a surrogate marker of continued viability. METHODS: Freshly drawn PRP was stored in oxygen permeable and non-oxygen permeable containers under conditions of constant agitation with or without added prostaglandin, intermittent agitation and no agitation, over an 8-day period. Serial platelet counts, mean platelet volume, platelet distribution width and platelet-large cell ratio, and collagen-induced aggregometry were undertaken. Once collagen-induced aggregation had gone to completion, the plasma was centrifuged to pellet platelet material and the supernatants separated and frozen for batched analysis of released platelet-derived growth factor-BB (PDGF-BB). RESULTS: As would be anticipated, platelet counts, percentage aggregation and PDGF-BB levels all reduced over time. Platelet parameters suggested that platelets were more stable in the non-oxygen permeable containers, possibly due to pH drift and a degree of microaggregate formation in the oxygen permeable containers. CONCLUSION: Although platelet integrity and PDGF-BB fell over time, the intermittently agitated non-oxygen permeable container appeared to retain better platelet integrity and function, and PDGF-BB release, than other storage conditions, with potential for clinical use for 5-8 days.

Cornus mas L. (CM) fruits are rich in anthocyanins and possess both antiinflammatory and antioxidant activities. The current study was conducted to investigate whether supplementation with CM could ameliorate lipid profile and vascular inflammation in dyslipidemic children and adolescents. In this randomized clinical trial, 40 dyslipidemic children and adolescents ages 9 to 16 years were assigned to receive 50 g of CM twice a day after lunch and dinner (n = 20, case group) or to continue their normal diet (n = 20, control group). The serum levels of total cholesterol (TC), low-density lipoprotein cholesterol (LDL-C), high-density lipoprotein cholesterol (HDL-C), triglycerides (TG), apo A-I, apo B, intracellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1), vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1), C-reactive protein (CRP), and anthropometric indices were determined at baseline and then after weeks 3 and 6 of the trial. After week 6 of the trial, the TC, TG, LDL-C, apo B, ICAM-1, and VCAM-1 levels in the CM group were significantly lower and the HDL-C and apo A-I levels higher than at baseline. After week 6 of the trial, none of these parameters in the control group, except for ICAM-1, was significantly altered from baseline. However, between-group comparison showed a significant difference only for apo A-I (p = 0.016) and a borderline significant difference for ICAM-1 (p = 0.076). No significant difference in body mass index, waist-to-hip ratio, or C-reactive protein was observed between the studied groups. The present findings revealed a trend toward amelioration of lipid profile and vascular inflammation following addition of CM to the daily diet of dyslipidemic children and adolescents but this needs to be verified by larger scale trials.
