RESUMO

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of time for mating and gestation length on reproductive efficiency in dogs. Groups of eight, six and six beagle bitches were mated with a total of three sires on days 3, 5 and 7, respectively, after the luteinizing hormone (LH) surge. All the bitches whelped successfully. The gestation lengths (the intervals from the LH surge to the whelping) were 65.1 +/- 1.9, 65.5 +/- 1.9 and 68.0 +/- 1.8 days, respectively. This length of mating 7 days after the LH surge was significantly longer than that of mating 3 and 5 days after the LH surge (p < 0.05). The litter sizes were 5.5 +/- 2.2, 6.2 +/- 1.9 and 4.8 +/- 2.1, respectively and there was no significant difference between any of the groups. In conclusion, mating 3-7 days after a bitch's LH surge results in a good reproductive efficiency and the intervals from the LH surge to the whelping of mating 7 days after the LH surge shows a longer day significantly in comparison with mating 3 and 5 days after the LH surge.

RESUMO

In vitro fertilization and embryo transfer were performed for rederivation of four strains of mice harbouring mouse hepatitis virus (MHV) and/or Pasteurella pneumotropica (P. pneumotropica). Superovulated oocytes were fertilized by preincubated cauda epididymis sperm in vitro. Fertilized eggs at 2-cell stage were transferred into the oviducts of specific pathogen free (SPF) recipients. Microbial examination of sperm and/or oocyte donors verified the presence of P. pneumotropica and/or of antibodies to MHV in all strains, but neither in the recipients nor in the offspring antibodies to MHV could they be detected. The results indicate that an in vitro fertilization-embryo transfer (IVF-ET) system is an effective and simple alternative to cesarean operation in infected mice.

RESUMO

Embryo transfer was attempted in order to control disease in rabbits. Embryos were collected by flushing of the oviducts of donor rabbits on Day 2 of gestation, into small tubes containing the medium, transported within the body warmth of the person carrying the tubes and transferred into the oviducts of SPF pseudopregnant recipients. The time between embryo collection and transfer was 7-8 hours. Ten of 56 embryos derived from Bordetella bronchiseptica infected animals developed into newborns. As a result of bacteriological examination of intranasal exudate in six weanlings, no pathogens were detected. We suggest that embryo transfer is an effective and simple alternative to caesarean operation in Bordetella bronchiseptica infected rabbits.

RESUMO

1. The protein binding of disopyramide was measured in plasma obtained from nonpregnant women, pregnant women in the first, second, and third trimesters, matched pairs of mothers and neonates (cord plasma), and 1 month postpartum women (n = 6 or 8 of each). 2. Plasma samples spiked with 0.2-12.0 micrograms ml-1 of the drug were ultrafiltered and the free fractions were measured with a fluorescent polarization immunoassay. 3. The mean (+/- s.d.) percentages of free drug at a total concentration of 3.0 micrograms ml-1 observed in the third trimester (46 +/- 9%) and neonate (79 +/- 5%) groups were greater (P less than 0.05 or 0.01) than that in the non-pregnant group (34 +/- 7%). In contrast, the corresponding value observed in the postpartum group (23 +/- 8%) was less (P less than 0.05) than that in the non-pregnant group. In addition, there was a significant (P less than 0.01) difference in the mean percentage of free drug at 3.0 micrograms ml-1 in plasma from mothers (43 +/- 9%) and neonates (79 +/- 5%). 4. A multiple regression analysis indicated that alpha 1-acid glycoprotein (r = -0.88, P less than 0.01), rather than albumin (r = -0.008), dominated the binding of disopyramide within the therapeutic range of drug concentration. An analysis of the binding parameters of disopyramide suggested that alterations in binding were attributable to changes in the capacity rather than the affinity of binding.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)
