RESUMO

Ewing sarcoma (EwS), a malignancy primarily affecting adolescents and young adults, encompasses various types such as bone, extraskeletal, chest wall, and soft tissue-based tumors, all of which share a common genetic origin. A small portion of them are extraosseous, impacting diverse anatomical sites. Characterized by a specific translocation, this rare cancer rarely involves the vagina, with very few documented cases. This report details the unique case of a middle-aged woman diagnosed with extraosseous vaginal EwS, a rarity in this age group and gender. With no established guidelines, a multidisciplinary approach is crucial, emphasizing the need for further case reporting to enhance understanding and management strategies.

With the emergence of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) variants, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) authorized the third dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech (BNT162b2) vaccine with the rationale for prolonged elevation of anti-SARS-CoV-2 antibody titers and protection against the SARS-CoV-2 virus. To better understand how administration of the third dose of the Pfizer/BioNTech coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccine affects the incidence and severity of SARS-CoV-2 infections, we administered the third dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech (BNT162b2) to 189 participants. Blood samples were collected from participants during each of their scheduled visits (baseline, week two, week 12, and week 24) and tested for semi-quantitative anti-SARS-CoV-2 immunoglobulin G (IgG) titers. Our results showed that administration of the third dose of the Pfizer-BioNTech (BNT162b2) vaccine elicited elevated anti-SARS-CoV-2 IgG antibodies for the 24-week duration of the study. IgG antibody titers were greatest in week two, and progressively decreased by week 12 and week 24, with statistically significant differences between the IgG antibody titers for each collection date.

RESUMO

The most common malignant laryngeal tumors are squamous cell carcinomas (SCCs), and other types such as sarcomas are rare. Osteosarcomas of the larynx are extremely rare within the subset of sarcomas, with very few cases reported in the literature. This cancer has a predilection for elderly males, in the sixth to eighth decades of life. Associated symptoms include hoarseness, stridor, and dyspnea. It is known to spread early and has a high rate of recurrence. We present the case of a 73-year-old male, a former smoker, who presented to the clinic with severe dyspnea and progressive hoarseness and was found to have a large exophytic mass arising from the epiglottis. A biopsy of the mass showed a poorly differentiated cancer with osteoid and new bone formation. He then underwent surgical removal of the mass, followed by radiation, and achieved clinical remission. However, a surveillance positron emission tomography (PET) scan 14 months later showed a hypermetabolic lesion in the left lung. Biopsy revealed metastatic osteosarcoma, and unfortunately, this cancer also spread to the brain. In this report, we will focus on the histological features of this rare malignancy and treatment options.

RESUMO

Prostate cancer is the second-most common cause of male cancer-related death among US men. The American Cancer Society estimates that in 2014 there will be about 233,000 new cases of prostate cancer and about 29,500 deaths due to prostate cancer. Sixty percent of cases are diagnosed in men aged 65 years or older. Localized prostate cancers are managed with active surveillance or external beam radiation therapy or radical prostatectomy after risk stratification. Advanced prostate cancers are managed with hormonal therapy for castrate sensitive prostate cancer and with novel androgen blocking therapies, chemotherapy, or radio-immunotherapy for castrate resistant prostate cancers. Prostate-specific antigen (PSA) flare is characterized by a rise in the PSA level, followed by a decline to below baseline values after starting therapies such as androgen deprivation therapy, systemic chemotherapy, or local therapies such as brachytherapy or cryotherapy.
