RESUMO
The aim of this study was to assess the impact of genotype-environment interaction (GEI) on the manifestation of traits such as age at first calving (AFC), age at first service (AFS), and calving interval (CI) through the application of the reaction norm model in Holstein cattle raised in Paraná state, Brazil. Utilizing data from the milk testing service of the Paraná Association of Holstein Cattle Breeders (APCBRH), this study analyzed records from 179,492 animals undergoing their first, second, and third lactations from the years 2012 to 2022. These animals were part of 513 herds spread across 72 municipalities in Paraná. The environmental gradient was established by normalizing contemporary group solutions, derived from the animal model, with the 305-day-corrected milk yield serving as the dependent variable. Subsequently, reaction norms were determined utilizing a Random Regression Model. Spearman's correlation was then applied to compare the estimates of breeding values across different environmental gradients for the studied traits. The highest EG (+ 4) indicates the least challenging environments, where animals experience better environmental conditions. Conversely, lower EG (-4) values represent the most challenging environments, where animals endure worse conditions. The only trait that exhibited a moderate heritability magnitude was AFC (0.23) in the least challenging environmental condition. The other traits were classified as having low heritability magnitudes regardless of the evaluated environmental gradient. While minimal evidence was found for the influence of GEI on CI, a clear GEI effect was observed for AFC and AFS across all environmental gradients examined. A reversal in genotype ranking occurred under extreme environmental conditions. The findings suggest that the best-performing genotype under one environmental gradient may not necessarily excel under another.

Fetal programming suggests that maternal stimulation and nutrition during the period of fetal development can program the progeny. Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA), an isomer of linoleic acid, has been characterized in several aspects, but few studies have been performed on its involvement in reproduction and fetal programming. The aim of this study was to evaluate the F1, F2 and F3 progeny of female mice supplemented with CLA during the pregestational and gestational periods with respect to biometric and reproductive parameters, as well as ovarian morphophysiology. The F1 progeny of mothers supplemented with CLA exhibited stable weight gain, while the F2 progeny showed no effects (P=0.0187 and P=0.0245, respectively). A reduction in Lee's Index was observed in both generations at the second post-weaning evaluation week in the animals treated with CLA (P=0.0100 and P=0.0078, respectively). The F2 generation showed an increase in the anogenital index in both sexes of the animals treated with CLA (P= 0.0114 and P<0.0001, female and male respectively). CLA administration to mothers did not affect any of the following in their progeny: ovarian follicle mobilization (P>0.05), follicle number (P>0.05) and the integrated density of the lipid content of oocytes included in antral follicles (P>0.05). This study evaluated the use of CLA in mothers and found that it did not affect the progeny regarding murine reproductive performance, suggesting that this supplement can be used safely.
RESUMO
PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Remote monitoring (RM) is the standard of care for patients with cardiac implantable electronic devices (CIEDs), particularly pacemakers. However, the long-term outcomes of RM versus conventional monitoring (CM) of pacemakers and its effectiveness in reducing in-office (IO) visits for device reprogramming require elucidation. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to compare the RM and CM of pacemakers over a long-term follow-up. RECENT FINDINGS: We systematically searched the PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, Cochrane, and ClinicalTrials.gov databases for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) comparing RM and CM of pacemakers with at least 12 months of follow-up. Binary endpoints were pooled with risk ratios (RRs), whereas continuous outcomes were computed using mean differences (MDs) or standardized MDs (SMDs). Heterogeneity was assessed using I2 statistics. Among the eight included RCTs, 2159 (48.9%) of 4063 patients underwent RM. Follow-up periods ranged from 12 to 24 months. There were no significant between-group differences in all-cause mortality (RR = 1.19; 95% confidence interval [CI], 0.90-1.57; p = 0.22; I2 = 0%), stroke (RR = 0.90; 95% CI, 0.43-1.91; p = 0.79; I2 = 23%), hospitalizations for cardiovascular and/or device-related adverse events (RR = 0.95; 95% CI, 0.75-1.21; p = 0.70; I2 = 0%), and quality of life (SMD = - 0.06; 95% CI, - 0.22 to 0.10; p = 0.473; I2 = 0%). RM was associated with fewer IO visits/patient/year (MD = 0.98; 95% CI, - 1.64 to - 0.33; p = 0.08; I2 = 98%) and higher rates of atrial tachyarrhythmia (ATA) detection (RR = 1.22; 95% CI, 1.01-1.48; p = 0.04; I2 = 0%) than was CM. This meta-analysis suggests that RM of pacemakers leads to higher rates of ATA detection and fewer IO visits/patient/year, without compromising patient safety.

Electrocoagulation with electrical polarity inversion was used to treat oil in water emulsions (145 ± 5 mg dm-3) using a cylindrical 4.8 dm3 reactor in continuous mode. The effects of spatial time and time between polarity inversion were explored using a three-level full factorial design (32), followed by Spearman correlation (ps), which has shown that the aluminum concentration in the treated effluent is not directly dependent on the mass of aluminum released by the electrodes. Nonetheless, the loss of mass of the electrodes is correlated (ps = 0.6970) to oil removal and to less electric power consumption (ps = -0.6909). Surface response analysis revealed that increasing the number of inversion cycles reduces electrode degradation. The treatment reduced the effluent's chemical oxygen demand by over 92.8%. Regarding environmental impact, there is an inverse statistical correlation between aluminum in the treated effluent and oil removal (ps = -0.7426), indicating that removing more oil with less environmental impact is possible. The better condition, considering oil removal and lower electrode consumption, was obtained with a spatial time of 36 min and a polarity inversion time of 10 s; for this condition, oil removal reached 87.0% with an energy expenditure of about 7.21 kW h.m-3.

AIM: To evaluate the association between sociodemographic factors and screen exposure during meals with the consumption of dietary markers in children treated at a university hospital in Rio de Janeiro. METHODS: Cross-sectional study with children of both sexes between 2 and 9 years of age. Food consumption and screen exposure were assessed using specific forms. The socio-demographic data evaluated were age, maternal education, household composition, receipt of government benefits, and household food and nutrition security. The statistical analysis included simple and multivariate logistic regression with a confidence interval of 95%. RESULTS: Among the 129 children evaluated, most of them were of preschool age (57.4%), 71.3% received some type of government benefit, and 69.8% ate meals in front of screens. Among the markers of a healthy diet, beans (86.0%) and fresh fruits (69.8%) were the most consumed, while among the markers of an unhealthy diet, the most common components were sweetened beverages (61.7%) and cookies, candies, or other sweets (54.7%). There was a higher consumption of sweetened beverages among the children whose families received a government benefit (OR 2.63; 95% CI: 1.13-6.13) and who were exposed to a screen during meals (2.27; 95% CI: 1.01-5, 14). CONCLUSION: This study showed that in view of the high frequency of consumption of unhealthy foods and screen exposure during meals, it is imperative that food and nutrition education actions are taken to promote an adequate and healthy food environment in childhood.
RESUMO
Ovarian cryopreservation is an alternative for the preservation of fertility, and the subcutaneous transplantation site is considered one of the most promising. Studies evaluating the follicular growth and its relationship with gene expression and vascular perfusion are essential for improving this technique and its clinical application. Thus, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of subcutaneous autotransplantation and vitrification on follicular growth and atresia and their relationship with vascular perfusion and gene expression. Therefore, female mice were ovariectomized, and the ovaries were divided in two experimental groups (1) vitrified (treatment, n = 97) and (2) not vitrified (control, n = 97) and subsequently were transplanted. Then grafts, from both groups, were recovered after 1, 12, or 23 days (D1, D12, D23) and subjected to follicular quantification, morphometry, and qPCR. Non-transplanted ovaries (D0) were also used. The estrous cycle and vascular perfusion were monitored throughout the experiment. On D9, 100% of the animals had reestablished their estrous cycles (p > 0.05). Blood perfusion at the transplant site was similar for both treatments (p > 0.05), with greater perfusion at the site of vitrified transplants only on D1 (p < 0.05). A drastic reduction in the number of antral follicles and an increased number of atretic follicles were observed on D1 (p < 0.0001), associated with upregulation of Casp3, Fshr, and Igf1r; and downregulation of Bax, Acvr1, Egfr, and Lhcgr (p < 0.05). Our findings indicate that the first day after subcutaneous transplantation is a critical period for follicular survival, with intense follicular atresia independent of Bax upregulation.

RESUMO
Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) is a mixture of positional isomers of linoleic acid found in ruminant products and meat. The diet supplementing with CLA is an emerging area, requiring studies to elucidate its effects on animals and human reproduction, as well as its side effects. Therefore, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of CLA gastric administration, during the pregestational and gestational period in biometric and reproductive parameters, as well as in ovarian morphophysiology. Animals were distributed in three groups: (1) control (n = 10); (2) fish oil (n = 10); and (3) CLA (n = 10), that daily received, by gavage, phosphate-buffered saline, fish oil and CLA, respectively, carried out over 50 days (before mating, mating and pregnancy). There was an increment in the nasoanal distance and Lee index of the CLA and fish oil-treated groups during the first weeks (P > 0.05). CLA administration did not affect the ovarian follicle mobilization (P > 0.05), the number of follicles (P > 0.05) and the integrated density of lipid content of oocytes included in antral follicles (P > 0.05). There was no effect of CLA administration on the litter weight (P > 0.05; F2 and F3), however, an increment (P < 0.05) in the number of pups per litter (F2) was observed. Overall, this study demonstrated the absence of side effects of the CLA gastric administration on mice reproductive performance and suggests that this treatment would transgenerationally enhance fertility in this species.

The aim of this study was to evaluate the genotype x environment interaction (GxE) for scrotal circumference (SC) measured at different ages using pedigree-based (A-1) and pedigree and genomic-based (H-1) relationship matrices. Data from 1,515 Brahman bulls, from the Cooperative Research Centre for Beef Genetic Technologies (Beef CRC) experimental dataset, were used in this study. SC was adjusted to age and body weight measured at 6 mo (SC6), 12 mo (SC12), 18 mo (SC18), and 24 mo of age (SC24). Body weight (BW) measured at 6 mo (BW6), 12 mo (BW12), 18 mo (BW18), and 24 mo of age (BW24) was used as criteria to describe the environment for SC in each age. All the animals measured were genotyped using medium-density SNP chips ("50k" or "70k" SNP) and their genotype were imputed using a reference panel with 729,068 SNP. The environment gradient (EG) was obtained by standardizing the solutions of the contemporary groups obtained by Animal Model with BW as the dependent variable. Then, the reaction norms (RN) were determined through a Random Regression Model. The breeding values (EBV) were estimated using either A-1 or H-1. The rank correlation was obtained using Spearman's correlation among the EBV estimated for the traits in analysis. For SC6 and SC24, higher estimates of heritability (h²) were obtained using A-1, when compared with those observed with H-1. In those ages, the improvement of the environment decreases the h² coefficient. On the other hand, the h² for SC12 and SC18 increased as the environment became more favorable, regardless of the matrix used. The RN for SC6 and SC24 estimated using A-1 and H-1 showed a decrease of variance from the worst to the best environment, an indication of existence of GxE. On the other hand, for SC12 and SC18, there were no significant differences between the EBV estimated in the lower and in the higher environments, regardless of the kinship matrix used, suggesting absence of GxE on those ages. Spearman's correlation among EBV estimated using A-1 and H-1 in different EG was practically equal to unity for all traits evaluated. In our study, there was weak evidence of GxE effect on SC in ages suitable for selection for sexual precocity. So, the absence of GxE at 12 and 18 mo means that these ages are advantageous for measuring SC to selection for sexual precocity. The advantage is that no changes in classification were observed when the sires were evaluated in different environments.
Beef production systems rely on efficient cow-calf operations, that is, farms where the cow herd has a high level of fertility and pregnancies are common. Bull fertility also plays an important role in terms of pregnancy rates. To increase herd fertility, cattle breeders and genetic selection programs use some indicator traits that are related to fertility. A common indicator trait used is scrotal circumference (SC), which like most reproduction traits are influenced by the animal's genetics and its environment. For some traits, when the environment has a large effect and it interacts with the genetics of the animals, selection might be less successful. Therefore, it is important to investigate genotype by environment interactions and their effect on reproduction traits used for selection. In this study, SC was measured at four different ages in Brahman cattle. We found weak evidence of genotype by environment effect on SC measured at 12 and 18 mo. In short, SC measured at these ages can be a good indicator of sexual precocity. No changes in sire rankings were observed when SC was measured at those ages, meaning that selecting the best sire is more straightforward than if the environment was playing a bigger role.

OBJECTIVES: To evaluate the effect of vitamin D supplementation on glycemic control in children and adolescents with T1DM. CONTENT: A systematic search was conducted of the Medline/PubMed, Web of Science, Embase, BVS/Lilacs, Cochrane Library, Scopus, Cinahl, Food Science, and FSTA databases. Two reviewers independently extracted article data and assessed quality. SUMMARY: A total of 1,613 eligible articles were retrieved, ten of which met the selection criteria: eight clinical trials, one retrospective cohort study, and one cross-sectional study. Regarding the cutoff points used to classify vitamin D status, most of the studies set deficiency at 25-hydroxyvitamin D <20 ng/mL, sufficiency at ≥30 ng/mL, and insufficiency as the interval between these values. Regarding intervention strategies, most used cholecalciferol for supplementation, but there was great variation in the dose and supplementation time. When evaluating the effect of vitamin D supplementation on HbA1c, a significant improvement in glycemic control was observed in 50% of the studies. However, only one of these studies was classified as being of positive methodological quality, with three having their quality classified as neutral and one as negative. OUTLOOK: There is yet no consistent evidence on the effect of vitamin D supplementation on glycemic control as an adjuvant in the treatment of children and adolescents with T1DM.

BACKGROUND: Methods for assessing nutritional status in children and adolescents with cancer is a difficult in clinical practice. The study aimed to evaluate the performance of Subjective Global Nutritional Assessment (SGNA) in predicting clinical outcomes in children and adolescents with cancer in Brazil. METHODS: This was a prospective cohort multicenter study. It was included 723 children and adolescents with cancer aged 2-18 years between March 2018 and August 2019. Nutritional assessment was performed according to World Health Organization recommendations and using SGNA within 48h of hospitalization. Unplanned readmission, length of hospital stay, and post-discharge death were analyzed. Cohen's kappa coefficient was used to ascertain the agreement between body mass index for age (BMI/A) and SGNA. The sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive values, and accuracy of SGNA were estimated. Odds ratios (ORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were evaluated using multiple logistic regression. RESULTS: The mean patient age was 9.4 ± 4.9 years. SGNA showed that 29.7% (n = 215) and 6.5% (n = 47) patients had moderate and severe malnutrition, respectively. Considering the concurrent validity criterion, SGNA had an OR (95% CI) of 6.8 (3.1-14.9) for predicting low and very low weight for age at admission, with a sensitivity and specificity of 72.4% (59%-82.1%) and 72% (64.2%-78.9%), respectively. SGNA could predict death in children with severe/moderate malnutrition, with an accuracy of 63.8% (63%-65.1%). Logistic multivariate analysis showed that the adjusted effect of death; hematological tumor; living in the northeast, southeast, and midwest regions of Brazil; and older age was associated with malnutrition according to SGNA. CONCLUSION: Based on concurrent validity between SGNA and anthropometry, SGNA performed well and had a good ability to predict death in Brazilian children with cancer.

The cryopreservation of murine ovarian tissue and its transplantation can be a promising technique for the preservation of fertility and an alternative for the future reconstitution of scientific valuable strains of mice. Accordingly, the aim of this study was to describe the entire surgical procedure for ovariectomy and dorsal subcutaneous autotransplantation in mice, and also some data about the efficiency of this procedure. Female C57Bl/6J mice (n = 18) were anaesthetised and bilaterally ovariectomized. After surgery, ovaries were autotransplanted in small subcutaneous pouches in the dorsal region of the forelimbs. The animals were inspected daily and, 23 days after transplantation, euthanasia and recovery of ovarian tissues were performed. Postoperative recovery, oestrous cyclicity, and folliculogenesis progression were evaluated. At 23 days after transplantation, the recovery of the ovaries was feasible, all classes (primordial to antral) of follicles were observed. Additionally, satisfactory efficiency rates were obtained, with 100% of anaesthesia survival rate, survival, graft recovery, folliculogenesis progression and oestrous cyclicity. In general, this short article describes ovarian ectopic autologous transplantation as an effective technique for maintaining rodent oogenesis and endocrine ovarian function. Even more broadly, we can still assume that the application of this technique may reduce the number of breeding matrices and experimental animals in the near future.

OBJECTIVES: Colostrum is the first secretion produced by the mammary glands and is present through the seventh day after birth. Colostrum has important immunomodulatory components and protective factors that contribute to the protection and development of newborns. The oropharyngeal administration of colostrum (OAC) has been proposed as a potential nutritional option for very low-birth-weight (VLBW) newborns (<1500 g). This study aimed to analyze the clinical outcomes of VLBW infants receiving OAC. METHODS: This is a retrospective longitudinal study with nonprobability sampling of VLBW infants on the OAC protocol. VLBW infants for whom no OAC data were available, who received no dose, or who died within the first 7 d of life were excluded. The Mann-Whitney test was used to compare quantitative variables and the Wilcoxon test to assess the evolution of anthropometric values with a significance level of 5% (P < 0.05). RESULTS: Enteral nutritional therapy was commenced after 1 d (median: 1 d; interquartile range [IQR], 1-1 d). Full enteral feeding was achieved after 11 d (median: 11.0 d; IQR, 9.0-16.0 d). Birth weight was recovered after 11 d (median: 11 d; IQR, 7.0-14.0 d). OAC was commenced at 3 d of life, and 32.5 doses (IQR, 21.0-44.0 d) were given in total. There were significant differences in the evolution of anthropometric characteristics during hospitalization, with a tendency to recover birth weight more quickly the higher the number of doses administered (P = 0.07). Time to full enteral feeding was significantly longer and time to recovery of birth weight significantly shorter when OAC was commenced ≤3 d after birth (P = 0.023). CONCLUSIONS: OAC was associated with a shorter time to recover birth weight and time to full enteral feeding.

Ovarian tissue cryopreservation is emerging as a promising alternative for fertility preservation of cancer survivors. To date, more than a hundred couples have successfully had babies using this procedure, although it is still considered experimental and demands further investigation. In this work, we evaluated the effects of vitrification, warming and autotransplantation procedures on the morphology and gene expression of murine ovaries. Ovaries were removed from adult female C57BL6 mice (n = 15), vitrified, warmed and autotransplanted (vitrified group), additionally, ovaries were autotransplanted without vitrification (control group, n = 15). After twenty days, grafted ovaries were harvested and used for histological and ultrastructural analysis, germinal vesicle (GV) oocyte collection, RNA sequencing, and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). All classes of follicles and GV were observed in both control and vitrified/warmed transplanted ovaries, and the numbers of primordial, antral and atretic follicles were not different (p > 0.05). Using RNA-seq, we detected 16,602 vs 13,527 expressed genes in vitrified and control ovaries, respectively; and 623 significantly dysregulated genes (fold change >1.5; 332 up-regulated and 291 down-regulated). Cellular membranes, cytoskeletons, and extracellular matrices were found as the main functions of the differentially expressed genes. Moreover, vitrified samples also presented ultrastructural alterations in the cytoskeleton, cell junctions, and endoplasmic reticulum. Taken together, this work showed for the first time that ovarian cells might trigger a compensatory gene regulation mechanism to maintain cellular structure and folliculogenesis progression after vitrification and autotransplantation.

The objective of this study was to estimate adjustment factors of scrotal circumference for growth traits in Nellore cattle. Measurement at post-yearling of scrotal circumference from 100,107 Nellore was adjusted for six traits: age (A), body weight (BW), hip height (HH), conformation (C), precocity (P), musculature (M), and simultaneously for age and the other five traits (A-BW, A-HH, A-C, A-P, A-M), body weight and the other four traits (BW-HH, BW-C, BW-P, BW-M), and hip height and the other three traits (HH-C, HH-P, HH-M). Standard values were 500 days, 300 kg, 135 cm, and 3, for age, body weight, hip height, and visual scores, respectively. Amplitudes of adjustment factor of scrotal circumference for age, body weight, and hip height were 0.6028, 0.4869, and 0.1572, respectively. Scrotal circumference is expected to grow, on average, 8.71 cm per 100 days of age, 6.51 cm per 100 kg of body weight, and 4.81 cm per 10 cm of hip height. The results showed higher amplitude in the adjustment factor of scrotal circumference for age and body weight (0.3429) compared with age and hip height and body weight and hip height (0.1271 and 0.0443, respectively). The amplitude observed in adjustment factor of scrotal circumference for conformation, precocity, and musculature were 0.1328, 0.1175, and 0.1160, respectively. Considering different adjustment factors of scrotal circumference can be useful for identifying better selection criteria for growth and/or sexual precocity in Nellore.(AU)

AIM: To evaluate the predictive factors of glycemic control in children and adolescents with type 1 diabetes mellitus (T1DM). METHODS: Cross-sectional study at a referral service in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Sociodemographic, anthropometric, clinical, and dietary factors were evaluated. Food consumption was evaluated by 24â¯h dietary recall and the NOVA system was adopted for classifying the foods according to the extent and purpose of industrial processing. The predictive factors were evaluated by multivariate linear regression, adopting pâ¯<â¯0.05. RESULTS: One hundred and twenty children and adolescents participated, with a mean age of 11.74â¯years (±2.88) and HbA1c of 8.13% (±1.26). The mean diabetes duration was 6.68â¯years (±3.33) and the insulin used was 1.05 units per kilogram of ideal weight (IU/kg of ideal weight; ±0.46) About 80% (nâ¯=â¯96) used carbohydrate counting and it was verified that 24.27% (±17.89) of the participants' total calories came from ultraprocessed foods. For each year of diagnosis with T1DM and for each IU/kg of weight used, HbA1c increased by 0.087% (ßâ¯=â¯0.087, pâ¯=â¯0.007) and 0.651%, respectively (ßâ¯=â¯0.651; pâ¯=â¯<0.001). Use of carbohydrate counting was associated with a 1.058% reduction in HbA1c (ßâ¯=â¯-1.058; pâ¯=â¯0.001). CONCLUSION: Disease duration and insulin dose were directly reflected in HbA1c concentrations, while carbohydrate counting showed an inverse association.

Abstract Objective: To identify the prevalence of persistence of the arterial canal (PAC) in newborns in a public hospital. Methodology: This is a quantitative, observational and descriptive study. Data from 313 compendiums of newborns were collected, noting the occurrence of the diagnosis of PAC in a sample of inmate newborns at a public hospital in the north of Minas Gerais, Brazil, in the period between August 2015 and August 2016, up to the 7th day of life. The following variables were analyzed: gestational age, birth weight, Apgar 1' and 5', respiratory discomfort, use of ventilation support equipment and use of medication for respiratory function. The collected data were statistically processed through the Minitab program. Results: The incidence of the PAC is higher in premature infants, where the relationship of gestational age and birth weight are inversely proportional to the PAC. The prevalence in this study was 2,6 % of newborns with heart disease, and it was observed respiratory discomfort in 43 % of them. Conclusion: The prevalence of arterial canal in the sample was relatively low; among the factors associated with the occurrence of heart disease, alterations in the fifth minute of Apgar were statistically significant. Being so, identifying the occurrence of the diagnosis of PAC and knowing the respiratory impact can aid in the programming of assistance and, in particular, favor the improvement of the conduct of nursing.
