RESUMO

Spirurids, specifically the Rictularia, Chitwoodspirura, Streptopharagus, and Protospirura genera, have been reported to parasitize all nonhuman primate taxa. Spirurid pathogenesis in nonhuman primates has not been reported frequently; however, Protospirura muricola has been associated with serious gastric pathologies, including gastric perforation. This study was a retrospective study of 38 vervet monkey (Chlorocebus pygerythrus) necropsies performed in a primate sanctuary that houses captive orphaned or injured wild-born vervet monkeys. Individuals were categorized according to their age, sex, and body condition score to investigate the relationships between these factors and parasite presence. This study identified P. muricola in 47.37% of the necropsied carcasses. Regarding individual factors associated with P. muricola infection, no significant differences between males and females were observed; however, relationships between parasite presence and poor body condition and advanced host age were observed. Furthermore, one monkey death was potentially directly related to spirurid pathogenic action, because the individual showed gastric perforation.

Vervet monkeys (Chlorocebus pygerythrus), considered a species of "least concern" by the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), are widely maintained at primate sanctuaries in South Africa. Permanent surgical contraception is a necessary method for the management of this species in captivity. In this study, a new vasectomy technique was evaluated and involves a prescrotal approach with only one surgical incision, aiming to excise a piece of vas deferens, leaving open the testicular side, and creating a loop on the prostatic side to avoid future recanalization. The birth rate was studied to assess the success of the technique. This technique significantly reduced breeding in the study population from 33 births in the first year to four births during the last year of the study. These results show that this type of vasectomy is a fast, simple, and safe technique for controlling monkey populations in sanctuaries.

BACKGROUND: Internal temperature data are essential for clinical evaluation in veterinary medicine. During the last decade, new thermometry devices have been developed. Identification microchips with a temperature sensor offer double utility to clinicians by satisfying animal identification regulations and providing a non-invasive method for temperature measurement. METHODS: During this study, 26 healthy vervet monkeys (Chlorocebus pygerythrus) were implanted with a subcutaneous temperature transponding microchip. For each monkey, internal temperature measurements from the microchip and from an anaesthetic monitor (rectal sensor) were recorded every 5 minutes during an anaesthetic procedure. RESULTS: In this study, there were 83 paired samples obtained under normothermic conditions and another 72 paired samples obtained under hypothermic conditions, with interclass correlation coefficients of 0.79 and 0.69, respectively, between the two temperature measurement approaches. CONCLUSION: Measurements obtained using the examined microchip thermal sensor exhibited good and excellent correlation with rectal temperature measurements under hypothermic and normothermic conditions, respectively.
