RESUMO

Silk fibers (SF) reeled from silkworms are constituted by natural proteins, and their characteristic structural features render them applicable as materials for textiles and packaging. Modification of SF with functional materials can facilitate their applications in additional areas. In this work, the preparation of functional SF embedded with carbon dots (CD) is reported through the direct feeding of a CD-modified diet to silkworms. Fluorescent and mechanically robust SF are obtained from silkworms (Bombyx mori) that are fed on CDs synthesized from the Morus rubra variant of mulberry leaves (MB-CDs). MB-CDs are introduced to silkworms from the third instar by spraying them on the silkworm feed, the mulberry leaves. MB-CDs are synthesized hydrothermally without adding surface passivating agents and are observed to have a quantum yield of 22%. With sizes of ≈4 nm, MB-CDs exhibited blue fluorescence, and they can be used as efficient fluorophores to detect Dopamine (DA) up to the limit of 4.39 nM. The nanostructures and physical characteristics of SF weren't altered when the SF are infused with MB-CDs. Also, a novel DA sensing application based on fluorescence with the MB-CD incorporated SF is demonstrated.

RESUMO

In order to meet the agricultural requirement for the expanding population, pesticides have been used regularly even with their severe threat. The uncontrolled use of these pesticides can cause irreparable damage to both soil and plant-associated microbiome. Therefore, an environment friendly alternative to enhance plant productivity and yield is highly important. Here comes the importance of endophytic microorganisms with multi-plant beneficial mechanisms to protect plants from the biotic and abiotic stress factors. However, their performance can be negatively affected under pesticide exposure. Hence the present study was conducted to analyse the tolerating ability of a Bacillus sp. Fcl1 which was originally isolated from the rhizome of Curcuma longa towards the pesticide quinalphos and also its ability to reduce the quinalphos-induced toxicity in Vigna unguiculata. The results revealed that the viability of endophytic Bacillus sp. Fcl1 depended on the concentration of quinalphos used for the study. Further, Fcl1 supplementation was found to alleviate the quinalphos-induced toxicity in Vigna unguiculata seedlings. The study is environmentally significant due to the pesticide tolerating and alleviating effect of Bacillus sp. Fcl1 in quinalphos-induced plant toxicity. This could suggest the application of microbes of endophytic origin as an efficient bioinoculant for field application even in the presence of pesticide residues.

RESUMO

In spite of newer innovations and process improvements, catheter related infections still pose serious threat to hospitalized patients. Silver nanoparticles (AgNPs) are well demonstrated to have antibacterial properties and also have been implemented for surface fabrication of many indwelling medical devices. So, herein we sought to compare the performance of AgNPs generated through biogenic routes using bacteria and plant extract for their antibacterial and antibiofilm potential against biofilm forming Staphylococcus aureus. The biosynthesized AgNPs were characterized by UV- Visible spectroscopy, HR-TEM and EDS analysis. The antibacterial efficiency of the nanoparticles was detected by Disc diffusion assay, MIC and MBC analysis. The antibiofilm properties of the nanoparticles were also investigated. The antibacterial mode of interaction of both nanoparticles on the bacterium was analyzed by HR-TEM. Insight into mode of interaction and mechanism of antibacterial activity of both AgNPs showed them to have promises for surface fabrication of central venous catheters. No study has been conducted so far to compare the efficiency of two different biogenic AgNPs and this highlights the novelty of the current work. Though both AgNPs were observed to exhibit comparable activity in terms of bactericidal and antibiofilm, the mode of bacterial interaction and degree of damage caused was entirely different.
