RESUMO

Research at the intersection of social science and genomics, 'sociogenomics', is transforming our understanding of the interplay between genomics, individual outcomes and society. It has interesting and maybe unexpected implications for education research and policy. Here we review the growing sociogenomics literature and discuss its implications for educational researchers and policymakers. We cover key concepts and methods in genomic research into educational outcomes, how genomic data can be used to investigate social or environmental effects, the methodological strengths and limitations of genomic data relative to other observational social data, the role of intergenerational transmission and potential policy implications. The increasing availability of genomic data in studies can produce a wealth of new evidence for education research. This may provide opportunities for disentangling the environmental and genomic factors that influence educational outcomes and identifying potential mechanisms for intervention.

The surface properties of biomaterials interact directly with biological systems, influencing cellular responses, tissue integration, and biocompatibility. Surface topography plays a critical role in cardiac tissue engineering by affecting electrical conductivity, cardiomyocyte alignment, and contractile function. Current methods for controlling surface properties and topography in cardiac tissue engineering scaffolds are limited, expensive, and lack precision. This study introduces a low-cost, one-step degradation process to create scaffolds with well-defined micro-grooves from multilayered 3D printed poly(lactic acid)/thermoplastic polyurethane composites. The approach provides control over erosion rate and surface morphology, allowing easy tuning of scaffold topographical cues for tissue engineering applications. The findings reported in this study provide a library of easily tuneable scaffold topographical cues. A strong dependence of neonatal rat cardiomyocyte (NRCM) contact guidance with the multilayers' dimension and shape in partially degraded polylactic acid (PLA)/thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) samples is observed. NRCMs cultured on samples with a layer thickness of 13 ± 2 µm and depth of 4.7 ± 0.2 µm demonstrate the most regular contractions. Hence, the proposed fabrication scheme can be used to produce a new generation of biomaterials with excellent controllability determined by multilayer thickness, printing parameters, and degradation treatment duration.

Humans have undergone a long evolutionary history of violent agonistic exchanges, which would have placed selective pressures on greater body size and the psychophysical systems that detect them. The present work showed that greater body size in humans predicted increased knockout power during combative contests (Study 1a-1b: total N = 5,866; Study 2: N = 44 openweight fights). In agonistic exchanges reflective of ancestral size asymmetries, heavier combatants were 200% more likely to win against their lighter counterparts because they were 200% more likely to knock them out (Study 2). Human dominance judgments (total N = 500 MTurkers) accurately tracked the frequency with which men (N = 516) knocked out similar-sized adversaries (Study 3). Humans were able to directly perceive a man's knockout power because they were attending to cues of a man's body size. Human dominance judgments-which are important across numerous psychological domains, including attractiveness, leadership, and legal decision-making-accurately predict the likelihood with which a potential mate, ally, or rival can incapacitate their adversaries.

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Endoscopic submucosal dissection (ESD) is a technically challenging resection technique for en-bloc removal of dysplastic and early cancerous gastrointestinal (GI) lesions. We conducted a single-arm retrospective study evaluating the safety and efficacy of a new through-the-needle injection-capable electrosurgical knife used in upper and lower ESD procedures performed at 6 US academic centers. METHODS: Data were retrospectively collected on consecutive cases in which the new ESD knife was used. The primary efficacy endpoint was successful ESD (en bloc resection with negative margins). Secondary efficacy endpoints included en-bloc resection rate, curative resection rate, median ESD time, and median dissection speed. The safety endpoint was device- or procedure-related serious adverse events (SAEs). RESULTS: ESD of 581 lesions in 579 patients were reviewed, including 187 (32.2%) upper GI and 394 (67.8%) lower GI lesions. Prior treatment was reported in 283 (48.9%) patients. Successful ESD was achieved in 477 (82.1% of 581) lesions ‒ lower for patients with versus without submucosal fibrosis (73.6% versus 87.0%, respectively, P < 0.001), but similar for those with versus without previous treatment (81.7% versus 82.3%, respectively, P = 0.848). Four hundred and forty-three (76.2% of 581) lesions met criteria for curative resection. Median ESD time was 1.0 (range 0.1-4.5) hour. Median dissection speed was 17.1 (IQR 5.3-29.8) cm2/hour. Related SAEs were reported in 15 (2.6%) patients, including delayed hemorrhage (1.9%), perforation (0.5%), or postpolypectomy syndrome (0.2%). CONCLUSION: A newly developed through-the-needle injection-capable ESD knife showed a good success rate and excellent safety at US centers. (ClinicalTrials.gov number, NCT04580940).

INTRODUCTION: Increases in skeletal muscle size occur in response to prolonged exposure to resistance training that is typically ascribed to increased muscle fibre size. Whether muscle fibre number also changes remains controversial, and a paucity of data exists about myofibrillar structure. This cross-sectional study compared muscle fibre and myofibril characteristics in long-term resistance-trained (LRT) versus untrained (UNT) individuals. METHODS: The maximal anatomical cross-sectional area (ACSAmax) of the biceps brachii muscle was measured by MRI in 16 LRT (5.9 ± 3.5 years' experience) and 13 UNT males. A muscle biopsy was taken from the biceps brachii to measure muscle fibre area, myofibril area and myosin spacing. Muscle fibre number, myofibril number in total and per fibre were estimated by dividing ACSAmax by muscle fibre area or myofibril area, and muscle fibre area by myofibril area, respectively. RESULTS: Compared to UNT, LRT individuals had greater ACSAmax (+70%, P < 0.001), fibre area (+29%, P = 0.028), fibre number (+34%, P = 0.013), and myofibril number per fibre (+49%, P = 0.034) and in total (+105%, P < 0.001). LRT individuals also had smaller myosin spacing (-7%, P = 0.004; i.e. greater packing density) and a tendency towards smaller myofibril area (-16%, P = 0.074). ACSAmax was positively correlated with fibre area ( r = 0.526), fibre number ( r = 0.445) and myofibril number (in total r = 0.873 and per fibre r = 0.566), and negatively correlated with myofibril area ( r = -0.456) and myosin spacing ( r = -0.382) (all P < 0.05). CONCLUSIONS: The larger muscles of LRT individuals exhibited more fibres in cross-section and larger muscle fibres, which contained substantially more total myofibrils and more packed myofilaments than UNT participants, suggesting plasticity of muscle ultrastructure.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) is a rapidly progressive neurodegenerative disease with average lifespan of 2-5 years after diagnosis. The identification of novel prognostic and pharmacodynamic biomarkers are needed to facilitate therapeutic development. Metalloprotein human superoxide dismutase 1 (SOD1) is known to accumulate and form aggregates in patient neural tissue with familial ALS linked to mutations in their SOD1 gene. Aggregates of SOD1 have also been detected in other forms of ALS, including the sporadic form and the most common familial form linked to abnormal hexanucleotide repeat expansions in the Chromosome 9 open reading frame 72 (C9ORF72) gene. Here, we report the development of a real-time quaking-induced conversion (RT-QuIC) seed amplification assay using a recombinant human SOD1 substrate to measure SOD1 seeding activity in postmortem spinal cord and motor cortex tissue from persons with different ALS etiologies. Our SOD1 RT-QuIC assay detected SOD1 seeds in motor cortex and spinal cord dilutions down to 10-5. Importantly, we detected SOD1 seeding activity in specimens from both sporadic and familial ALS cases, with the latter having mutations in either their SOD1 or C9ORF72 genes. Analyses of RT-QuIC parameters indicated similar lag phases in spinal cords of sporadic and familial ALS patients, but higher ThT fluorescence maxima by SOD1 familial ALS specimens and sporadic ALS thoracic cord specimens. For a subset of sporadic ALS patients, motor cortex and spinal cords were examined, with seeding activity in both anatomical regions. Our results suggest SOD1 seeds are in ALS patient neural tissues not linked to SOD1 mutation, suggesting that SOD1 seeding activity may be a promising biomarker, particularly in sporadic ALS cases for whom genetic testing is uninformative.

Most herbivores must balance demands to meet nutritional requirements, maintain stable thermoregulation and avoid predation. Species-specific predator and prey characteristics determine the ability of prey to avoid predation and the ability of predators to maximize hunting success. Using GPS collar data from African wild dogs, lions, impala, tsessebes, wildebeest and zebra in the Okavango Delta, Botswana, we studied proactive predation risk avoidance by herbivores. We considered predator activity level in relation to prey movement, predator and prey habitat selection, and preferential use of areas by prey. We compared herbivore behaviour to lion and wild dog activity patterns and determined the effect of seasonal resource availability and prey body mass on anti-predator behaviour. Herbivore movement patterns were more strongly correlated with lion than wild dog activity. Habitat selection by predators was not activity level dependent and, while prey and predators differed to some extent in their habitat selection, there were also overlaps, probably caused by predators seeking habitats with high prey abundance. Areas favoured by lions were used by herbivores more when lions were less active, whereas wild dog activity level was not correlated with prey use. Prey body mass was not a strong predictor of the strength of proactive predation avoidance behaviour. Herbivores showed stronger anti-predator behaviours during the rainy season when resources were abundant. Reducing movement when top predators are most active and avoiding areas with a high likelihood of predator use during the same periods appear to be common strategies to minimize predation risk. Such valuable insights into predator-prey dynamics are only possible when using similar data from multiple sympatric species of predator and prey, an approach that should become more prevalent given the ongoing integration of technological methods into ecological studies.

Background: The combination of inadequate financial training, limited benchmarks, and mindset contribute to many physicians prioritizing revenue below quality, outcomes, and safety. This creates a challenge as hospital administrators aim to motivate clinicians to improve RVU generation and increase revenue. Recent Findings: Creating physician/administrator teams that defines and explores the gap between observed and expected financial performance in parallel with appreciating the physician's practice preferences can create new opportunities for billing. The proposed 3 phase approach emphasizes nonjudgmental communication, education and partnership. The most common and effective opportunities for improvement include billing optimization, scheduling and system infrastructure modifications. Implications for Practice: As reimbursement decrease, balancing revenue generation with physician satisfaction has become paramount. Promoting data drive bidirectional communication can lead to identifying previously unrecognized billing opportunities where change is driven by providers rather than by 1-dimensional institutional goals.

BACKGROUND: Among critically ill adults undergoing tracheal intubation, hypoxemia increases the risk of cardiac arrest and death. The effect of preoxygenation with noninvasive ventilation, as compared with preoxygenation with an oxygen mask, on the incidence of hypoxemia during tracheal intubation is uncertain. METHODS: In a multicenter, randomized trial conducted at 24 emergency departments and intensive care units in the United States, we randomly assigned critically ill adults (age, ≥18 years) undergoing tracheal intubation to receive preoxygenation with either noninvasive ventilation or an oxygen mask. The primary outcome was hypoxemia during intubation, defined by an oxygen saturation of less than 85% during the interval between induction of anesthesia and 2 minutes after tracheal intubation. RESULTS: Among the 1301 patients enrolled, hypoxemia occurred in 57 of 624 patients (9.1%) in the noninvasive-ventilation group and in 118 of 637 patients (18.5%) in the oxygen-mask group (difference, -9.4 percentage points; 95% confidence interval [CI], -13.2 to -5.6; P<0.001). Cardiac arrest occurred in 1 patient (0.2%) in the noninvasive-ventilation group and in 7 patients (1.1%) in the oxygen-mask group (difference, -0.9 percentage points; 95% CI, -1.8 to -0.1). Aspiration occurred in 6 patients (0.9%) in the noninvasive-ventilation group and in 9 patients (1.4%) in the oxygen-mask group (difference, -0.4 percentage points; 95% CI, -1.6 to 0.7). CONCLUSIONS: Among critically ill adults undergoing tracheal intubation, preoxygenation with noninvasive ventilation resulted in a lower incidence of hypoxemia during intubation than preoxygenation with an oxygen mask. Background: Varicella zoster virus (VZV) has been associated with focal cerebral arteriopathy (FCA) and arterial ischemic stroke (AIS) in childhood. The Vascular effects of Infection in Pediatric Stroke (VIPS) II study aimed to examine this relationship in the modern era when most children in North America and Australia receive VZV vaccination with live, attenuated virus. Methods: This 22-center prospective cohort study enrolled 205 children (28 days-18 years) with AIS (2017-2022), collected baseline [hyperacute (≤72 hours; n=194) and acute (4-6 days; n=181)] and convalescent (1-6 weeks; n=74) serum samples. Sites enrolled 95 stroke-free controls with single serum samples. A virology research laboratory measured VZV IgM and IgG titers by an in-house enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA). Baseline IgG seropositivity indicated prior exposure (vaccination/infection) and elevated IgM titers indicated recent reactivation. Results: Median (IQR) age was 11.6 (5.5-15.6) years for cases and 11.8 (6.8-15.3) years for controls. Baseline serologies indicated prior VZV exposure in 198 cases (97%) and all controls. Parents of cases reported VZV vaccination in 160 (78%) and remote chicken pox in three (1.4%). Twenty cases (9.8%) and three controls (3.1%) had serologic evidence of recent VZV reactivation (p=0.06); all had remote VZV exposure (vaccination in 19 cases and all controls) and all were asymptomatic. Recent VZV reactivation was seen in similar proportions in arteriopathic, cardioembolic, and idiopathic stroke. Of 32 cases of FCA, 4 (12.5%) had recent VZV reactivation, versus no cases of arterial dissection (n=10) or moyamoya (n=16). Conclusions: Serologic evidence of recent VZV reactivation (≈1-6 weeks prior to stroke) was present in one in 10 cases of childhood AIS, including those without arteriopathy. Clinically silent VZV reactivation may be a childhood stroke trigger despite widespread vaccination. These cases could represent waning immunity with reactivation of either vaccine virus or wild-type virus after an unrecognized secondary VZV infection.

Cytochrome P450 monooxygenases are an extensive and unique class of enzymes, which can regio- and stereo-selectively functionalise hydrocarbons by way of oxidation reactions. These enzymes are naturally occurring but have also been extensively applied in a synthesis context, where they are used as efficient biocatalysts. Recently, a biosynthetic pathway where a cytochrome P450 monooxygenase catalyses a critical step of the pathway was uncovered, leading to the production of a number of products that display high antitumour potency. In this work, we use computational techniques to gain insight into the factors that determine the relative yields of the different products. We use conformational search algorithms to understand the substrate stereochemistry. On a machine-learned 3D protein structure, we use molecular docking to obtain a library of favourable poses for substrate-protein interaction. With molecular dynamics, we investigate the most favourable poses for reactivity on a molecular level, allowing us to investigate which protein-substrate interactions favour a given product and thus gain insight into the product selectivity.

The transsulfuration pathway plays a key role in mammals for maintaining the balance between cysteine and homocysteine, whose concentrations are critical in several biochemical processes. Human cystathionine ß-synthase is a heme-containing, pyridoxal 5'-phosphate (PLP)-dependent enzyme found in this pathway. The heme group does not participate directly in catalysis, but has a regulatory function, whereby CO or NO binding inhibits the PLP-dependent reactions. In this study, we explore the detailed structural changes responsible for inhibition using quantum chemical calculations to validate the experimentally observed bonding patterns associated with heme CO and NO binding and molecular dynamics simulations to explore the medium-range structural changes triggered by gas binding and propagating to the PLP active site, which is more than 20 Å distant from the heme group. Our results support a previously proposed mechanical signaling model, whereby the cysteine decoordination associated with gas ligand binding leads to breaking of a hydrogen bond with an arginine residue on a neighbouring helix. In turn, this leads to a shift in position of the helix, and hence also of the PLP cofactor, ultimately disrupting a key hydrogen bond that stabilizes the PLP in its catalytically active form.

Mutations in the protein superoxide dismutase-1 (SOD1) promote its misfolding and aggregation, ultimately causing familial forms of the debilitating neurodegenerative disease amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). Currently, over 220 (mostly missense) ALS-causing mutations in the SOD1 protein have been identified, indicating that common structural features are responsible for aggregation and toxicity. Using in silico tools, we predicted amyloidogenic regions in the ALS-associated SOD1-G85R mutant, finding seven regions throughout the structure. Introduction of proline residues into ß-strands II (I18P) or III (I35P) reduced the aggregation propensity and toxicity of SOD1-G85R in cells, significantly more so than proline mutations in other amyloidogenic regions. The I18P and I35P mutations also reduced the capability of SOD1-G85R to template onto previously formed non-proline mutant SOD1 aggregates as measured by fluorescence recovery after photobleaching. Finally, we found that, while the I18P and I35P mutants are less structurally stable than SOD1-G85R, the proline mutants are less aggregation-prone during proteasome inhibition, and less toxic to cells overall. Our research highlights the importance of a previously underappreciated SOD1 amyloidogenic region in ß-strand II (15QGIINF20) to the aggregation and toxicity of SOD1 in ALS mutants, and suggests that ß-strands II and III may be good targets for the development of SOD1-associated ALS therapies.

AIMS: Transthoracic echocardiography is recommended in all patients with acute coronary syndrome but is time-consuming and lacks an evidence base. We aimed to assess the feasibility, diagnostic accuracy and time-efficiency of hand-held echocardiography in patients with acute coronary syndrome and describe the impact of echocardiography on clinical management in this setting. METHODS AND RESULTS: Patients with acute coronary syndrome underwent both hand-held and transthoracic echocardiography with agreement between key imaging parameters assessed using kappa statistics. The immediate clinical impact of hand-held echocardiography in this population was systematically evaluated.Overall, 262 patients (65±12 years, 71% male) participated. Agreement between hand-held and transthoracic echocardiography was good-to-excellent (kappa 0.60-1.00) with hand-held echocardiography having an overall negative predictive value of 95%. Hand-held echocardiography was performed rapidly (7.7±1.6 min) and completed a median of 5 [interquartile range 3-20] hours earlier than transthoracic echocardiography. Systematic hand-held echocardiography in all patients with acute coronary syndrome identified an important cardiac abnormality in 50% and the clinical management plan was changed by echocardiography in 42%. In 85% of cases, hand-held echocardiography was sufficient for patient decision-making and transthoracic echocardiography was no longer deemed necessary. CONCLUSIONS: In patients with acute coronary syndrome, hand-held echocardiography provides comparable results to transthoracic echocardiography, can be more rapidly applied and gives sufficient imaging information for decision-making in the vast majority of patients. Systematic echocardiography has clinical impact in half of patients, supporting the clinical utility of echocardiography in this population, and providing an evidence-base for current guidelines.

BACKGROUND: Thoracic epidural anesthesia (TEA) has been shown to reduce the burden of ventricular tachycardia in small case series of patients with refractory ventricular tachycardia and cardiomyopathy. However, its electrophysiological and autonomic effects in diseased hearts remain unclear, and its use after myocardial infarction is limited by concerns for potential right ventricular dysfunction. METHODS: Myocardial infarction was created in Yorkshire pigs (N=22) by left anterior descending coronary artery occlusion. Six weeks after myocardial infarction, an epidural catheter was placed at the C7-T1 vertebral level for injection of 2% lidocaine. Right and left ventricular hemodynamics were recorded using Millar pressure-conductance catheters, and ventricular activation recovery intervals (ARIs), a surrogate of action potential durations, by a 56-electrode sock and 64-electrode basket catheter. Hemodynamics and ARIs, baroreflex sensitivity and intrinsic cardiac neural activity, and ventricular effective refractory periods and slope of restitution (Smax) were assessed before and after TEA. Ventricular tachyarrhythmia inducibility was assessed by programmed electrical stimulation. RESULTS: TEA reduced inducibility of ventricular tachyarrhythmias by 70%. TEA did not affect right ventricular-systolic pressure or contractility although left ventricular-systolic pressure and contractility decreased modestly. Global and regional ventricular ARIs increased, including in scar and border zone regions post-TEA. TEA reduced ARI dispersion specifically in border zone regions. Ventricular effective refractory periods prolonged significantly at critical sites of arrhythmogenesis, and Smax was reduced. Interestingly, TEA significantly improved cardiac vagal function, as measured by both baroreflex sensitivity and intrinsic cardiac neural activity. CONCLUSIONS: TEA does not compromise right ventricular function in infarcted hearts. Its antiarrhythmic mechanisms are mediated by increases in ventricular effective refractory period and ARIs, decreases in Smax, and reductions in border zone electrophysiological heterogeneities. TEA improves parasympathetic function, which may independently underlie some of its observed antiarrhythmic mechanisms. This study provides novel insights into the antiarrhythmic mechanisms of TEA while highlighting its applicability to the clinical setting.

OBJECTIVE: To isolate the impact of subsumed surgery (a shorter procedure completed entirely during overlapping non-critical portions of a longer antecedent procedure) on patient outcomes. SUMMARY BACKGROUND DATA: The American College of Surgeons recently recommended the elimination of "concurrent surgery" with overlap during a procedure's critical portions. Guidelines for non-concurrent overlap have been established, but the safety of subsumed surgery remains to be examined. METHODS: All consecutive procedures from 2013 to 2021 within a multihospital academic medical center were included (n=871,441). Simple logistic regression was performed to compare postoperative events between patients undergoing non-overlap surgery (n=533,032) and completely subsumed surgery (n=11,319). Thereafter, coarsened exact matching was used to match patients with non-overlap and subsumed surgery 1:1 on CPT code, 18 demographic features, baseline health characteristics, and procedural variables (n=7,146). Exact-matched cases were subsequently limited to pairs performed by the same surgeon (n=5,028). Primary outcomes included 30-day readmission, ED visits, and reoperations. RESULTS: Univariate analysis suggested that subsumed surgery had a higher 30-day risk of readmission (OR 1.55, P<0.0001), ED evaluation (OR 1.19, P<0.0001), and reoperation (OR 1.98, P<0.0001). When comparison was limited to the exact same procedure and patients were matched on demographics and health characteristics, there were no outcome differences between patients with subsumed surgery and non-overlapping surgery, even when limiting analyses to the same surgeon. CONCLUSIONS: Similar surgeries for similar patients result in similar outcomes whether there is completely subsumed or no overlap. Individual surgeons performing a specific procedure have no outcome differences with subsumed and non-overlapping cases.

Importance: Acetaminophen (paracetamol) has many pharmacological effects that might be beneficial in sepsis, including inhibition of cell-free hemoglobin-induced oxidation of lipids and other substrates. Objective: To determine whether acetaminophen increases days alive and free of organ dysfunction in sepsis compared with placebo. Design, Setting, and Participants: Phase 2b randomized, double-blind, clinical trial conducted from October 2021 to April 2023 with 90-day follow-up. Adults with sepsis and respiratory or circulatory organ dysfunction were enrolled in the emergency department or intensive care unit of 40 US academic hospitals within 36 hours of presentation. Intervention: Patients were randomized to 1 g of acetaminophen intravenously every 6 hours or placebo for 5 days. Main Outcome and Measures: The primary end point was days alive and free of organ support (mechanical ventilation, vasopressors, and kidney replacement therapy) to day 28. Treatment effect modification was evaluated for acetaminophen by prerandomization plasma cell-free hemoglobin level higher than 10 mg/dL. Results: Of 447 patients enrolled (mean age, 64 [SD, 15] years, 51% female, mean Sequential Organ Failure Assessment [SOFA] score, 5.4 [SD, 2.5]), 227 were randomized to acetaminophen and 220 to placebo. Acetaminophen was safe with no difference in liver enzymes, hypotension, or fluid balance between treatment arms. Days alive and free of organ support to day 28 were not meaningfully different for acetaminophen (20.2 days; 95% CI, 18.8 to 21.6) vs placebo (19.6 days; 95% CI, 18.2 to 21.0; P = .56; difference, 0.6; 95% CI, -1.4 to 2.6). Among 15 secondary outcomes, total, respiratory, and coagulation SOFA scores were significantly lower on days 2 through 4 in the acetaminophen arm as was the rate of development of acute respiratory distress syndrome within 7 days (2.2% vs 8.5% acetaminophen vs placebo; P = .01; difference, -6.3; 95% CI, -10.8 to -1.8). There was no significant interaction between cell-free hemoglobin levels and acetaminophen. Conclusions and Relevance: Intravenous acetaminophen was safe but did not significantly improve days alive and free of organ support in critically ill sepsis patients. Canid species are highly adaptable, including to urban and peri-urban areas, where they can come into close contact with people. Understanding the mechanisms of wild canid population persistence in these areas is key to managing any negative impacts. The resource dispersion hypothesis predicts that animal density increases and home range size decreases as resource concentration increases, and may help to explain how canids are distributed in environments with an urban-natural gradient. In Australia, dingoes have adapted to human presence, sometimes living in close proximity to towns. Using a targeted camera trap survey and spatial capture-recapture models, we estimated spatial variation in the population density and detection rates of dingoes on Worimi Country in the Great Lakes region of the NSW coast. We tested whether dingo home range and population densities varied across a gradient of human population density, in a mixed-use landscape including, urban, peri-urban, and National Park environs. We found human population density to be a strong driver of dingo density (ranging from 0.025 to 0.433 dingoes/km2 across the natural-urban gradient), and to have a negative effect on dingo home range size. The spatial scale parameter changed depending on survey period, being smaller in the peak tourism period, when human population increases in the area, than in adjacent survey periods, potentially indicating reduced home range size when additional resources are available. Our study highlights the potential value of managing anthropogenic resource availability to manage carnivore densities and potential risk of human-carnivore interactions.
