RESUMO

We have evaluated the performance of the Bayer Immuno 1 serum HER-2/neu assay. The precision is excellent and varied between 1.7% and 2.1% at values of HER-2/neu ranging from 16.8 ng/mL to 108.6 ng/mL. In normal women who were followed on a monthly basis the average deviation was 6%. The concentration (mean +/- SD) in normal women was 8.7 +/- 3.2 ng/mL. There was no difference between pre and postmenopausal women. The normal/abnormal cutoff was defined as greater than 15 ng/mL. In normal women and those with benign disease the specificity varied between 95% and 100%. In women with breast cancer the sensitivity was 1.7% in stage I disease, 3.0% in stage II, 16.7 in stage III and 35.5% in stage IV. There were 56 elevations (14.7%) in the total group of 285 women with breast cancer. There was an excellent correlation with a microtitre plate method (r=0.9944). Longitudinal studies showed clearly that women who expressed HER-2/neu in their tissue had elevated serum levels and these levels reflected the clinical course of the patient. More extensive control studies are required to establish the role of HER-2/neu assays in the management of women with breast cancer.

RESUMO

180 patients with scoliosis (aged 12-29 years) were subjected to the correction of deformation by means of the Harringtone type distractors and spondylodesis with utilization of osseous transplants. In 24 of them (13,3%) the distractor has been broken in different terms after the operation. The danger of the break increases with the age of the patients and abruptly increases in case of scoliosis of the V degree (in excess of 90 degrees) and in case of necessity to bend the distractor to correct the kyphoscoliosis. The distractor break is associated not with the material structure but with the rod design.

RESUMO

A series of tumors of the nose & paranasal sinuses in children and adolescents was studied at the Hospital Infantil de Mexico, from 1958 to 1979, obtaining the charts of 70 boys and 30 girls. The tumors were considered, according to a clinical-histological classification, as benign, intermediate and malignant neoplasias. This study included the important signs and symptoms, involved areas. diagnostic means, type of therapy (surgery or combined). The surgical technique and results were followed for at least a sufficient time, to observe a 42% recovery rate, 13% of relapses, 8% of mortality and 37% lost to follow-up, or without sufficient time to determine results. The objectives of the present paper were: to determine the importance of an early diagnosis, types of combined therapy, and present surgical techniques.
