RESUMO

This article examines the definition of personality disorders (PDs) from a functional analytical framework and discusses the potential utility of such a framework to account for behavioral tendencies associated with PD pathology. Also reviewed are specific behavioral assessment methods that can be employed in the assessment of PDs, and how information derived from these assessments may be linked to specific intervention strategies.

RESUMO

In this reply to Bissett and Hayes (this issue) and Staats (this issue) we address critical comments in response to our initial proposal and highlight points of agreement. The overall thesis of our reply is that classification schemes based on nomothetic response covariation, such as DSM, complement, but do not substitute for, an idiographically-based functional analysis and behavioral assessment. In the context of our reply, we address the following primary concerns raised by Bissett, Hayes, and Staats: (a) we are essentially proposing the melding of two theoretically incongruent approaches, and that such a melding is inherently not viable or useful; (b) the behavior analytic approach cannot account for personality or psychological constructs; and (c) that categories based on topography do not have demonstrated treatment utility. We also discuss points of agreement with our respondents: (d) a theoretically-based descriptive classification system is required to ultimately advance clinical science, (e) the DSM personality disorder classification system, to remain viable, needs a stronger empirical base; and (f) that alternatives to DSM classification that more strongly emphasize behavioral principles are in need of development.

RESUMO

This study examined the predictability of dysfunctional job behaviors among law enforcement officers using 3 scales (Responsibility, Socialization, and Self-Control) of the California Psychological Inventory (H. G. Gough, 1995) that were hypothesized to assess the construct of conscientiousness, and 3 construct-oriented life history indices (drug use, criminal, work). Law enforcement officers were classified into disciplinary and control groups (n = 109 each), using a matched-case control study design. Mean differences between the 2 criterion groups on the 6 predictor variables were all statistically significant and in the hypothesized direction. The results are discussed in the context of conscientiousness as an explanatory construct, the relationship between life history and personality constructs, and methodological concerns in the development of construct-oriented life history indices.

RESUMO

This study examined the responsivity of depressives' behavior to contingent social feedback within the framework of Coyne's and Lewinsohn's models of depression. Subjects included 10 depressed inpatients, 8 nondepressed psychiatric inpatients, and 10 nondepressed individuals. Each subject participated in two structured interactions with an experimenter in baseline phases and phases in which ongoing contingent feedback was provided by a pair of observers. The results revealed that the behavior of all three subject groups was responsive to the feedback in both interactions. The results are consistent with past research demonstrating social skills problems among depressed individuals but do not support the notion of a social skill deficit in depression. The results are consistent with Coyne's model of depression and suggest that the problematic social behavior often associated with depression may be modifiable by immediate veridical feedback from others.

RESUMO

This commentary addresses the use of psychometric theory and methodology in the development of the 4th edition of the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-IV). Reliability issues include interdiagnostician reliability, temporally consistent diagnoses, and the relations of diagnostic criteria within categories. Validity issues include content validity of the diagnostic criteria, criterion-related validity (the relation between different criterion sets or their algorithms and alternative diagnostic criteria), and construct validity (the relation between diagnostic categories and external validators). Specific questions and methodology to investigate its utility vary with the different uses proposed for the diagnostic system. Specific psychometric methodologies that may be useful in developing the DSM-IV are noted, as are the limitations of psychometrics and their applicability to DSM-IV.

RESUMO

The three purposes of this study were: (a) to determine if treatment that is matched to a depressed subject's problematic behavioral response class (irrational cognitions, social skills problems, few pleasant events) is more effective in alleviating depression than is mismatched treatment; (b) to determine if a package treatment is as effective as or more effective than a matched treatment and more effective than a mismatched treatment in alleviating depression; and (c) to determine if a specific treatment produces more changes in its logically-related response class than in logically-unrelated response classes. Nine depressed women were assigned to one of three multiple baseline designs across subjects; subjects in each design received, respectively, matched, mismatched, or a package treatment. Results strengthened two hypotheses, that matched treatment and package treatment are both effective in alleviating depression. Specific treatments did not, however, differentially affect their logically-related response classes.

RESUMO

It has been proposed that dysmenorrheic women have a heightened pain sensitivity compared to nondysmenorrheic women, although previous studies investigating this hypothesis have yielded conflicting results. This study investigated the pain sensitivity of nondysmenorrheic women and of women suffering from spasmodic, congestive, and combined dysmenorrhea, across three phases of the menstrual cycle: premenstrual, menstrual, and intermenstrual. No interaction between type of dysmenorrhea and menstrual phase was found for either pain threshold or pain tolerance, using three procedures of experimentally induced pain. On a self-report measure of pain, however, the congestive and combined dysmenorrheics reported the highest degree of pain and distress, especially during the premenstrual and menstrual phases; nonsufferers reported the lowest degree and were stable across phases.
