[Prevention and treatment with cefoperazone of postoperative suppurative complications in heart surgery]. / Profilaktika i terapiia cefoperazonom posleoperatsionnykh gnoinykh oslozhnenii v kardiokhirurgii.

Clinical trials of cefoperazone (cefobid, Pfizer, USA) were carried out in 49 patients with cardiovascular diseases who had undergone surgical operations. The pathogens of infectious complications were investigated bacteriologically. Good results of the treatment were observed in 43 patients. Allergic reaction developed in 1 patient. Cefoperazone was shown advantageous in treatment of pulmonary complications in the operated patients. It was found possible to use cefoperazone in combination with aminoglycosides. Cefoperazone was found to be one of the drugs of choice in the treatment of aerobic and anaerobic bacteriemia, as well as sepsis after surgical operations on the heart and great vessels. The results on the use of cefoperazone for short-term "perioperative" prophylaxis in cardiosurgery (in accordance with the WHO instructions) are also presented.

[Diagnosis and treatment of pleural empyema of traumatic etiology]. / Diagnostika i lechenie émpiemy plevry travmaticheskogo proiskhozhdeniia.

Closed active sanitation of the pleural cavity with the local application of proteolytic enzymes and antibiotics in rational general therapy allowed to cure more than half of the patients with pleural empyema of a traumatic origin. An insufficient effect of drainage results in wide thoracotomy being necessary. The most adequate operation is pleurectomy and decortication contributing to complete expansion of the lung and preservation of its functional capacities.

[Features of the current stage in the study of surgical infection]. / Osobennosti sovremennogo étapa izucheniia khirurgicheskoi infektsii.

The article analyzes scientific problems for studying infection. Attention is paid to another role than that attributed by surgeons to staphylococci, gram-negative bacillus flora and anaerobes. A revision of the routinely used classification of surgical infections is shown to be necessary since their traditional division into purulent, putrifactive, anaerobic and specific ones is not up to the present state of science. It is noted that anaerobes take part in the appearance of 87% of postoperative complications and similar hospital infections.

[Heterologous antistaphylococcal gamma-globulin in the treatment of staphylococcal sepsis]. / Geterologichnyi protivostafilokokkovyi gamma-globulin v lechenii stafilokokkovogo sepsisa.

The first experience with the immunotherapy of staphylococcal sepsis with heterologous anti-staphylococcal gamma-globulin (cozym) with a high antitoxin titer--above 200 A. E./ml--is generalized in the article. The results of the anti-staphylococcal gamma-globulin use in 19 patients are analysed. A comparative evaluation of the drug related to the donor preparation is set forth. The advantages of heterologous anti-staphylococcal gamma-globulin are grounded.
