RESUMO

BACKGROUND: The Israel Defense Force is the only military organisation in the world that mandatorily conscripts women since its founding. Despite legislative changes, the percentage of women serving as combat soldiers is low, and the dropout rate is high. Women in these professions experience a complex and unique adaptation process. AIMS: To characterise the experiences of female combat soldiers adjusting to combat roles in comparison with male soldiers and non-warfighter female soldiers. METHOD: A pilot study was undertaken in order to inform further research. Mental health officers in the women's units conducted group interviews. These were composed of four stages: projection, reflection, processing and formulating solutions. RESULTS: The themes apparent in the interviews conform to phenomena appearing in the literature such as tokenism, disruption of gender identity and internalisation of the superiority of male values. In addition, we identified distortion of body image and increased burnout. DISCUSSION AND CONCLUSIONS: The study points to the significance of gender aspects in the mental adaptation process of women in combat positions. Issues pertaining perceptions of inequality should not be deemed to be purely sociological, but rather as a gateway facilitating adjustment. This should be taken into account in future research and in the formulation of support strategies.

RESUMO

PURPOSE: To date, more than thirty nine genetic loci have been associated with congenital cataracts. Despite this progress, current diagnostic techniques are insufficient for unraveling the underlying genetic defect in sporadic patients and small families. In the present manuscript we demonstrate the contribution of routine laboratory tests in the search for genetic defects of childhood cataracts. METHODS: Two families with congenital cataracts and hematologic findings that included hyperferritinemia and the "ii" blood type underwent detailed ophthalmologic and clinical examinations. Mutation analysis of the ferritin light chain (FTL) and glucosaminyl (N-acetyl) transferase 2, I-branching enzyme (GCNT2) genes was performed in the two families, respectively. RESULTS: In the family with the "ii" blood group we found a novel GCNT2 mutation c.G935A (p.G312D) in the cataract patients, while in the family with hyperferritinemia cataract syndrome we identified a G→C heterozygous mutation at position +32 of FTL. CONCLUSIONS: Hematologic biomarkers may simplify the search for the underlying molecular defect in families with congenital cataract.

RESUMO

Female sexual dysfunction is a common problem among the general population. Indifferent from males is not dependent solely on the physiological function of the genital organs. Partnership, body image perception and other physiological factors play a crucial role in the evaluation and treatment of female sexual dysfunction (FSD). The following article revise the most current literature regarding common gynecological disease and its association with sexual function.

RESUMO

Children with partially treated (PT) meningitis present diagnostic and therapeutic dilemmas. Since the approach to these children is not uniform, both in the literature and in daily practice, we conducted a survey among leading Israeli pediatricians from various hospitals to learn about their opinions and practices relating to this problem. Twenty-eight of 30 senior pediatricians responded to a questionnaire encompassing the various aspects of PT meningitis. The results of the survey highlighted the confusion and lack of clear policy regarding the definition, diagnostic approach and treatment of these children. Fifty percent of the pediatricians stated that even one dose of an antimicrobial agent, regardless of the type of drug, is sufficient for the definition of PT meningitis; 43% of the responders did not require any threshold parameter in CSF findings for the definition of probable bacterial meningitis among PT children and 52% did not think that a second lumbar puncture was useful as a diagnostic aid in PT meningitis. Epidemiological circumstances played a role in the diagnostic and therapeutic approach of infectious disease specialists mainly, but less so in the other groups of pediatricians. Finally, more than half the responders did not use throat cultures to identify potential carriers among PT meningitis patients and did not consider the use of prophylactic treatment in close contacts. These data clearly indicate the need for guidelines regarding the various aspects of PT meningitis.
