RESUMO

Poliomyelitis is on the verge of eradication since the introduction of the vaccine in 1950. In developed countries, those afflicted with the disease are primarily in their sixth decade and beyond, usually with disabling complications. Due to the diminished muscle power coupled with the abnormal bony anatomy and joint contractures, patients with polio present unique surgical challenges when they sustain fragility fractures. We report an uncommon case of intertrochanteric hip fracture in a limb affected with polio and hip dysplasia, on a background of ipsilateral distal femur fracture with previous surgical fixation. We aim to outline the challenges encountered during the surgery and the preoperative planning to overcome these shortcomings.

RESUMO

The surging interest in manipulating the polarization of piezo/ferroelectric materials by means of light has driven an increasing number of studies toward their light-polarization interaction. One way to investigate such interaction is by performing piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) while/after the sample is exposed to light illumination. However, caution must be exercised when analyzing and interpreting the data, as demonstrated in this paper, because sizeable photo-response observed in the PFM amplitude image of the sample is shown to be caused by the electrostatic interaction between the photo-induced surface charge and tip. Through photo-assisted Kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM), positive surface potential is found to be developed near the sample's surface under 405 nm light illumination, whose effects on the measured PFM signal is revealed by the comparative studies on its amplitude curves that are obtained using PFM spectroscopy mode with/without illumination. This work exemplifies the need for complementary use of KPFM, PFM imaging mode, and PFM spectroscopy mode in order to distinguish real behavior from artifacts.

RESUMO

The electromagnetically induced transparency (EIT)-like effect can be generated in the metamaterial system, but most metamaterial systems are composed of complex and elaborated components (nanostructures) that cannot be removed or replaced easily. In this paper, a graphene grating is used to interact with random metal nanostructures (i.e., individual and connecting nanostructures) to induce the EIT-like effect through two destructive interference excitation pathways. Except for the new induced EIT-like mode, the overall original optical patterns (the shape and intensity of the transmission spectrum) remain unchanged as compared with the single metal nanostructure. Furthermore, due to the optical properties of graphene, the induced EIT-like effect was blueshifted as the Fermi energy of graphene increased. By depositing the graphene grating and the metal nanostructures on a gallium oxide substrate, the EIT-like effect was redshifted as the temperature of the environment increased. Through this study, the EIT-like effect induced by the graphene grating with a random metal nanostructure system was demonstrated by using a simple geometric system; further, the mechanism is easy and can be introduced to many different metamaterial systems to generate the EIT-like effect without changing other optical properties of the original metamaterial system. As such, this opens the door to broader applications for optical communication networks.

RESUMO

The concentration of acceptor carriers, depletion width, magnitude of donor level movement as well as the sensitivity factor are determined from the UV response of a heterojunction consisting of ZnO on type IIb diamond. From the comparison of the I-V measurements in dark condition and under UV illumination we show that the acceptor concentration (∼10(17) cm(-3)) can be estimated from p-n junction properties. The depletion width of the heterojunction is calculated and is shown to extend farther into the ZnO region in dark condition. Under UV illumination, the depletion width shrinks but penetrates both materials equally. The ultraviolet illumination causes the donor level to move closer to the conduction band by about 50 meV suggesting that band bending is reduced to allow more electrons to flow from the intrinsically n-type ZnO. The sensitivity factor of the device calculated from the change of threshold voltages, the ratio of dark and photocurrents and identity factor is consistent with experimental data.

RESUMO

The current-voltage characteristics of Ni contacts with the surfaces of ZnO thin films as well as single crystal (0001) ZnO substrate are investigated. The ZnO thin film shows a conversion from Ohmic to rectifying behavior when annealed at 800°C. Similar findings are also found on the Zn-polar surface of (0001) ZnO. The O-polar surface, however, only shows Ohmic behavior before and after annealing. The rectifying behavior observed on the Zn-polar and ZnO thin film surfaces is associated with the formation of nickel zinc oxide (Ni1-xZnxO, where x = 0.1, 0.2). The current-voltage characteristics suggest that a p-n junction is formed by Ni1-xZnxO (which is believed to be p-type) and ZnO (which is intrinsically n-type). The rectifying behavior for the ZnO thin film as a result of annealing suggests that its surface is Zn-terminated. Current-voltage measurements could possibly be used to determine the surface polarity of ZnO thin films.

RESUMO

The surface phonon polariton (SPhP) characteristics of hexagonal sapphire crystals with non-polar and semi-polar crystallographic planes are investigated. A formulation that considers the effects of crystal orientation is employed to calculate the SPhP dispersion curves of the samples. The SPhP dispersion curves indicate that the SPhP responses of sapphire crystals in non-polar and semi-polar orientations are directionally sensitive. Resonance frequencies and spectral strengths of the SPhP modes can be modulated simply by tuning the angular positions of the samples. The validity of the theoretical results is confirmed by the polarized infrared attenuated total reflection measurements.
