RESUMO

PURPOSE: The aim of this manuscript is to embolden nurses to engage in policy that promotes diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging to advance health equity. BACKGROUND: It uses the Future of Nursing Report 2020-2030 to acknowledge the impact of structural racism and the need for a more equitable, just, and fair society. DISCUSSION: It also recognizes that nurses must harness their power and political will, to change and strengthen policies, so all nurses can practice to the full extent of their education and license. CONCLUSION: A case study of the response to COVID-19 in one underserved community is included to illustrate policy in action.

RESUMO

AIM: The aim was to develop an instrument to assess undergraduate nursing students' experience of service-learning to reveal benefits and identify service-learning as a professional value that leads to civic and social responsibility. BACKGROUND: Service-learning is a teaching and learning approach that integrates academic learning with experiential community-centered foci. It provides structured opportunities for reflection on broader social and cultural dimensions of health. There is no valid and reliable instrument to measure service-learning experience of nursing students. METHOD: A psychometric evaluation was conducted through item analysis, validity, and reliability. RESULTS: Face validity agreement was 80 percent; the content validity index was adjusted until 1 was achieved for each item. Two factors explained 58.64 percent of the total variance. Cronbach's α was .940 for the skills subscale and .932 for the personal insight subscale. CONCLUSION: The inventory demonstrated strong psychometric properties. Future research should focus on replication on diverse populations.

RESUMO

Safe nurse staffing is undeniably linked to patient safety and satisfaction, workforce satisfaction and safety, and cost savings. A nationwide mandate must be driven toward the use of electronic staffing and scheduling systems that take into consideration the patient's real-time specific needs This system must be matched to the most appropriate nurse with the ability to provide care safely for all the patients in his or her total assignments. These patient care assignments should be designed in partnership with managers and staff RNs. Only then will we reverse the trend of staffing-related patient deaths and injury in U.S. hospitals.

RESUMO

The purpose of the current study was to present a framework to determine potential usability of health websites by older adults. Review of the literature showed paucity of nursing theory related to the use of technology and usability, particularly in older adults. The Roy Adaptation Model, a widely used nursing theory, was chosen to provide framework for the new model. Technology constructs from the Technology Acceptance Model and United Theory of Acceptance and Use of Technology and behavioral control construct from the Theory of Planned Behavior were integrated into the construction of the derived model. The Use of Technology for Adaptation by Older Adults and/or Those With Limited Literacy (U.S.A.B.I.L.I.T.Y.) Model was constructed from the integration of diverse theoretical/conceptual perspectives. The four determinants of usability in the conceptual model include (a) efficiency, (b) learnability, (c) perceived user experience, and (d) perceived control. Because of the lack of well-validated survey questionnaires to measure these determinants, a U.S.A.B.I.L.I.T.Y. Survey was developed. A panel of experts evaluated face and content validity of the new instrument. Internal consistency of the new instrument was 0.96. Usability is key to accepting technology. The derived U.S.A.B.I.L.I.T.Y. framework could serve as a guide for nurses in formative evaluation of technology.
