We propose a technique for classifying paints with time-dependent properties using a new method of merging principal-component analyses (the "PCA-merge" method) that utilizes shifting of the barycenter of the PCA score plot. To understand the molecular structure, elemental concentrations, and the concentrations in the evolved gaseous component of various paints, we performed comprehensive characterizations using Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry, and head-space-gas chromatograph/mass spectrometry while drying the paint films for 1-48 h. As various detected intensity- and time-axis variables have different dimensions that cannot be handled equally, we normalized those data as an angle parameter (θ) using arctangent to reduce the influence of high/low intensity data and the various analytical instrument. We could classify the paints into suitable categories by applying multivariate analysis to this arctangent-normalized data set. In addition, we developed a new PCA-merge method to analyze data groups that include different time components. This method merges the PCA data groups of each time-component axis into that of specific-component axes and distinguishes each sample by utilizing the shift in the barycenter of the PCA score plot. The proposed method enables the simultaneous utilization of various data groups that contain information about static and dynamic properties. This provides further insight into the characteristics of the paint materials via shifts in the barycenter of the PCA scores without requiring numerous peak identifications.

Microplastics (MPs) have been found in a wide range of animal species including humans. The detection of MPs in human lungs suggests that humans inhale airborne microplastics (AMPs). Although birds respire more efficiently than mammals and are therefore more susceptible to air pollution, little is known about their inhalation exposure to MPs. In this study, we analyzed samples isolated from the lungs of several species of wild birds in Japan by attenuated total reflection (ATR) imaging method of micro-Fourier transform infrared (µFTIR) spectroscopy to clear whether AMPs can be inhaled and accumulate within the lungs of wild birds. To isolate MPs from lung samples of rock doves (Columba livia), black kites (Milvus migrans), and barn swallows (Hirundo rustica) euthanized for pest control, digestion and density separation were performed. After each sample collected on an alumina filter was measured by ATR imaging method using µFTIR spectroscopy, the physical and chemical characteristics of the detected MPs were evaluated. Six MPs were detected in 3 of 22 lung samples. Polypropylene and polyethylene were found in rock doves and ethylene vinyl acetate was found in a barn swallow. Most MPs were fragments of 28.0-70.5 µm. Our results demonstrated that in addition to dietary sources, some wild birds are exposed to MPs by inhalation, and these MPs reach the lungs.

SUMMARY: Ectopic ACTH (adrenocorticotrophic hormone) syndrome (EAS) is rarely associated with small-cell lung cancer (SCLC). Although chemotherapy is initially effective for SCLC, complicated EAS scarcely improves. Recently, immune checkpoint inhibitors have been used to treat SCLC. Atezolizumab plus chemotherapy for SCLC improved progression-free survival compared to conventional chemotherapy. However, little has been reported on the efficacy of the combination therapy for SCLC with EAS. We report a 72-year-old male who presented with 4-week history of leg oedema, proximal myopathy, weight loss, and worsened symptoms of diabetes and hypertension. Laboratory findings revealed hypokalaemia, increased plasma ACTH, and serum cortisol levels. Cortisol levels were not suppressed by the high-dose dexamethasone test. Chest and abdominal CT revealed a right lower lobe tumour with multiple metastases on the hilar lymph nodes, liver, lumbar spine, and bilateral enlarged adrenal glands. The patient was diagnosed with stage 4B SCLC with EAS. Hypercortisolaemia was then treated with metyrapone and atezolizumab plus chemotherapy, which was started for SCLC. After 10 days, the tumour shrank noticeably, and the ACTH level drastically decreased concomitantly with low cortisol levels with symptoms of fever, appetite loss, and general fatigue. Hydrocortisone treatment was initiated, and the symptoms resolved immediately. We describe a case of SCLC with EAS treated with atezolizumab plus chemotherapy, presenting with adrenal insufficiency. Close observation is required for patients with adrenal insufficiency receiving atezolizumab plus chemotherapy because of its stronger effect. Furthermore, advances in cancer therapy and care for endocrine paraneoplastic syndrome needs to be adapted. LEARNING POINTS: The immune checkpoint inhibitor atezolizumab has recently been approved for the treatment of small-cell lung cancer (SCLC). Approximately 1-6% of tumour ectopically produce ACTH and cause ectopic ACTH syndrome (EAS) as an endocrine paraneoplastic syndrome. The use of combined chemotherapy and atezolizumab in the ectopic ACTH syndrome secondary to small-cell lung cancer may cause a precipitous fall in circulating ACTH/cortisol, resulting in symptomatic adrenal insufficiency The advances in cancer therapy and treatment for endocrine paraneoplastic syndrome need to be adapted.
