RESUMO

The transverse Anderson localization (TAL) can always be observed in one-dimensional (1D) disordered systems as long as the transverse dimension is significantly larger than the localization length. This paper presents a detailed modal analysis in one particular realization of the 1D disordered optical waveguides with wavelength-scale feature size based on the imaginary distance beam propagation method (BPM). The localized modes are independent of the physical properties of the external excitation. Additionally, we investigate how the boundaries of disordered waveguides affect the localized modes, which are only related to the design parameters such as feature size, refractive index contrast, and fill-fraction. Finally, we explore the impact of the design parameters on the average localized mode width in the 1D disordered waveguides.

A narrow beam propagating through the disordered optical fiber first undergoes diffusive broadening, until its width becomes comparable to the localization length. The study of numerical algorithms and statistical methods in the simulation analysis process of disordered optical fibers demonstrates that the influence of polarization characteristics and transverse grids on calculation errors is critical for statistical numerical simulation in disordered systems. We performed a detailed numerical analysis of the effect of different design parameters in disordered fibers on the localization effect-that is, the localization length, including the refractive index contrast, feature size, and fill-fraction. The results show that the optimal fill-fraction is 50%, and that higher refractive index contrast and larger feature size relative to the wavelength both result in a smaller effective beam width. Finally, numerical evidence is also provided that optical images can be transported via transverse Anderson localization.

Local anesthetics are widely used clinically for perioperative analgesia to achieve comfort in medical treatment. However, when the concentration of local anesthetics in the blood exceeds the tolerance of the body, local anesthetic systemic toxicity (LAST) will occur. With the development and popularization of positioning technology under direct ultrasound, the risks and cases of LAST associated with direct entry of the anesthetic into the blood vessel have been reduced. Clinical occurrence of LAST usually presents as a series of severe toxic reactions such as myocardial depression, which is life-threatening. In addition to basic life support (airway management, advanced cardiac life support, etc.), intravenous lipid emulsion (ILE) has been introduced as a treatment option in recent years and has gradually become the first-line treatment for LAST. This review introduces the mechanisms of LAST and identifies the clinical symptoms displayed by the central nervous system and cardiovascular system. The paper features the multimodal mechanism of LAST reversal by ILE, describes research progress in the field, and identifies other anesthetics involved in the resuscitation process of LAST. Finally, the review presents key issues in lipid therapy. Although ILE has achieved notable success in the treatment of LAST, adverse reactions and contraindications also exist; therefore, ILE requires a high degree of attention during use. More in-depth research on the treatment mechanism of ILE, the resuscitation dosage and method of ILE, and the combined use with other resuscitation measures is needed to improve the efficacy and safety of clinical resuscitation after LAST in the future.

Chemotherapy-induced cognitive impairment (CICI) is widely recognized as a frequent adverse side effect following the administration of chemotherapeutic agents. This study aimed to explore the neuroprotective functions and mechanisms of microRNAs (miRNAs) mediated by dexmedetomidine (Dex) on cisplatin-induced CICI. The model rats received 5 mg/kg cisplatin injections once per week for 4 weeks. Dex (30 µg/kg) was administered before cisplatin treatment. The protective effects of Dex were evaluated using Morris water maze, Nissl staining, and transmission electron microscopy. Dex-mediated miRNAs were screened via miRNA sequencing. The effects of Dex and key miRNAs on mitochondrial DNA gene mt-ND1 and caspase-9 expression were tested. Dex exhibited a protective effect against decreased learning memory ability, hippocampal neuronal damage, and mitochondrial damage in CICI rats. Thirty-nine differentially expressed (DE) miRNAs were screened, 13 of which responded positively to Dex treatment. Gene Ontology annotation identified that DE miRNAs were mainly involved in transcription, DNA-templated. Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathway analysis showed that DE miRNAs were mainly involved in neuronal function and brain development-related pathways, such as axon guidance and calcium signaling pathways. Compared to cisplatin treatment, the expression of miR-429-3p responded more strongly to Dex treatment. In cisplatin-treated cultured hippocampal neurons, Dex treatment and miR-429-3p overexpression significantly increased mitochondrial DNA gene mt-ND1expression and decreased caspase-9 expression. Our study suggests that Dex alleviates CICI by modulating miR-429-3p expression in rats. Thus, Dex may be effective in preventing the side effects of cisplatin.

BACKGROUND: Bryopsis hypnoides Lamouroux is a siphonous green alga, and its extruded protoplasm can aggregate spontaneously in seawater and develop into mature individuals. The chloroplast of B. hypnoides is the biggest organelle in the cell and shows strong autonomy. To better understand this organelle, we sequenced and analyzed the chloroplast genome of this green alga. PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: A total of 111 functional genes, including 69 potential protein-coding genes, 5 ribosomal RNA genes, and 37 tRNA genes were identified. The genome size (153,429 bp), arrangement, and inverted-repeat (IR)-lacking structure of the B. hypnoides chloroplast DNA (cpDNA) closely resembles that of Chlorella vulgaris. Furthermore, our cytogenomic investigations using pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) and southern blotting methods showed that the B. hypnoides cpDNA had multimeric forms, including monomer, dimer, trimer, tetramer, and even higher multimers, which is similar to the higher order organization observed previously for higher plant cpDNA. The relative amounts of the four multimeric cpDNA forms were estimated to be about 1, 1/2, 1/4, and 1/8 based on molecular hybridization analysis. Phylogenetic analyses based on a concatenated alignment of chloroplast protein sequences suggested that B. hypnoides is sister to all Chlorophyceae and this placement received moderate support. CONCLUSION: All of the results suggest that the autonomy of the chloroplasts of B. hypnoides has little to do with the size and gene content of the cpDNA, and the IR-lacking structure of the chloroplasts indirectly demonstrated that the multimeric molecules might result from the random cleavage and fusion of replication intermediates instead of recombinational events.
