RESUMO

Carbon nanomembranes (CNMs), with a high density of subnanometer channels, enable superior salt separation performance compared to conventional membranes. However, defects that occur during the synthesis and transfer processes impede their technical realization on a macroscopic scale. Here, we introduce a practical and scalable interfacial polymerization method to effectively heal defects while preserving the subnanometer pores within CNMs. The defect-healed freestanding CNMs show an exceptional performance in forward osmosis (FO), achieving a water flux of 105 L m-2 h-1 and a specific reverse salt flux of 0.1 g L-1 when measured with 1 M NaCl as draw solution. This water flux is 10 times higher than that of commercially available FO membranes, and the reverse salt flux is 70% lower. Through successful implementation of the defect-healing method and support optimization, we demonstrate the synthesis of fully functional, centimeter-scale CNM-based composite membranes showing high water permeance and a high salt rejection. Our defect-healing method presents a promising pathway to overcome limitations in CNM synthesis, advancing their potential for practical salt separation applications.

RESUMO

Background: Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) have been the major cause of mortality in type 2 diabetes. However, new approaches are still warranted since current diabetic medications, which focus mainly on glycemic control, do not effectively lower cardiovascular mortality rate in diabetic patients. Protocatechuic acid (PCA) is a phenolic acid widely distributed in garlic, onion, cauliflower and other plant-based foods. Given the anti-oxidative effects of PCA in vitro, we hypothesized that PCA would also have direct beneficial effects on endothelial function in addition to the systemic effects on vascular health demonstrated by previous studies. Methods and results: Since IL-1ß is the major pathological contributor to endothelial dysfunction in diabetes, the anti-inflammatory effects of PCA specific on endothelial cells were further verified by the use of IL-1ß-induced inflammation model. Direct incubation of db/db mouse aortas with physiological concentration of PCA significantly ameliorated endothelium-dependent relaxation impairment, as well as reactive oxygen species overproduction mediated by diabetes. In addition to the well-studied anti-oxidative activity, PCA demonstrated strong anti-inflammatory effects by suppressing the pro-inflammatory cytokines MCP1, VCAM1 and ICAM1, as well as increasing the phosphorylation of eNOS and Akt in the inflammatory endothelial cell model induced by the key player in diabetic endothelial dysfunction IL-1ß. Upon blocking of Akt phosphorylation, p-eNOS/eNOS remained low and the inhibition of pro-inflammatory cytokines by PCA ceased. Conclusion: PCA exerts protection on vascular endothelial function against inflammation through Akt/eNOS pathway, suggesting daily acquisition of PCA may be encouraged for diabetic patients.

RESUMO

A method for creating genuine nanopores in high area density on monolayer two-dimensional (2D) metallic oxides has been developed. By use of the strong reduction capability of hydroiodic acid, active metal ions, such as FeIII and CoIII, in 2D oxide nanosheets can be reduced to a divalent charge state (2+). The selective removal of FeO2 and CoO2 metal oxide units from the framework can be tuned to produce pores in a range of 1-4 nm. By monitoring of the redox reaction kinetics, the pore area density can be also tuned from ∼0.9 × 104 to ∼3.3 × 105 µm-2. The universality of this method to produce much smaller pores and higher area density than the previously reported ones has been proven in different oxide nanosheets. To demonstrate their potential applications, ultrasmall metal organic framework particles were grown inside the pores of perforated titania oxide nanosheets. The optimized hybrid film showed ∼100% rejection of methylene blue (MB) from the water. Its water permeance reached 4260 L m-2 h-1 bar-1, which is 1-3 orders of that for reported 2D membranes with good MB rejections.

RESUMO

The interfacial properties within a composite structure of membranes play a vital role in the separation properties and application performances. Building an interlayer can facilitate the formation of a highly selective layer as well as improve the interfacial properties of the composite membrane. However, it is difficult for a nanomaterial-based interlayer to increase the flux and retention of nanofiltration membranes simultaneously. Here, we report a nanofiltration membrane with a hybrid dimensional titania interlayer that exhibits excellent separation performance. The interlayer, composed of Fe-doped titania nanosheets and titania nanoparticles, helps the formation of an ultrathin (∼30 nm thick) and defect-free polyamide selective layer with an ideal nanostructure. The hybrid dimensional interlayer endows the membrane with a superior permeability and alleviates flux decline. In addition, the rigid interlayer framework on a PVDF support drastically improves the pressure resistance of nanofiltration membranes and shows negligible flux loss up to 1.5 MPa of pressure.

RESUMO

The incidence of thyroid cancer (TC) has increased rapidly worldwide in recent years. Exposure to endocrine disruptors can affect thyroid hormones and is probably carcinogenic to humans. The effects of polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs), some heavy metals (Cd, Pb, As and Hg) on risk of TC have been rarely reported. Hence, we aimed to examine the associations of TC risk with exposure to PBDEs and four heavy metals. This case-control study involved 308 TC cases and 308 age- and sex-matched controls. Plasma PBDEs concentrations were determined by gas chromatograph-mass spectrometry. Concentrations of heavy metals concentrations in urine specimens were detected by graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometry or inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry. Conditional logistic regression models were used to explore associations of PBDEs and 4 heavy metals exposures with TC risk. A joint-effect interaction term was inserted into the logistic regression models to assess the multiplicative interaction effects of PBDEs-heavy metals on TC risk. Some PBDE congeners (BDE-028, -047, -099, -183, -209) were positively correlated with TC risk. As and Hg were also associated with the increased TC risk. Compared with low exposure levels, participants with high exposure levels of As and Hg were 5.35 and 2.98 times more likely to have TC, respectively. Co-exposure to BDE-209 and Pb had a negative interaction effect on TC risk. Some PBDE congeners (e.g. BDE-028, -047, -209) and Hg had a significant positive interaction effect on the risk of TC. The joint exposure of BDE-183 and Hg showed a negative interaction effect on TC risk, but the corresponding OR value was still statistically significant. Exposure to PBDEs, As and Hg may be associated with TC development. Joint exposure to PBDEs and Pb or Hg has interaction effects on TC risk. Further prospective research with large sample is required to confirm these findings.

RESUMO

Mumps remains one of the worldwide major health problems over the past decade. Seasonal variations of mumps indicate that meteorological factors play an important role in the development of mumps, but few studies have investigated the relationship between extreme meteorological factors and the incidence of mumps. Daily mumps cases and meteorological factors in Hefei, China, from 2011 to 2016 were obtained. A generalized additive model combined with the distributed lag nonlinear model (DLNM) was used to quantify the risk of extreme meteorological factors on mumps incidence. Nonlinear relationships were observed among all meteorological factors and mumps incidence. We found that extremely low and high temperatures increased the risk of mumps. The relative risks (RRs) of the cumulative effects along 30 lag days were 2.02 (95%CI: 1.14-3.56) and 2.42 (95%CI: 1.37-4.24), respectively. Both short and long sunshine duration had negative correlation on mumps, with cumulative RRs of 0.64 (95%CI: 0.46-0.92) and 0.57 (95%CI: 0.44-0.74), respectively. In the subgroup analysis, males were found to be more sensitive to extreme weather, especially extreme temperatures and sunshine duration. This study suggests that extreme meteorological factors, especially extreme temperatures and sunshine duration, exert a significant impact on the incidence of mumps. When formulating and implementing effective strategies to the prevention and control of mumps, authorities should take the effect caused by extreme meteorological factors into consideration and pay more attention to susceptible populations, such as male children and teenagers.

RESUMO

A highly stretchable nanocomposite (NC) hydrogel was fabricated via in situ free radical polymerization of acrylamide. In particular, an exfoliated two-dimensional MXene (Ti3C2) nanosheet was utilized as a crosslinker instead of traditional organic crosslinkers. The exfoliated Ti3C2 nanosheets were confirmed by atomic force microscopy (AFM) and dynamic light scattering (DLS) measurements. Compared with traditional organic crosslinked N,N-methylene bisacrylamide (BIS)/polyacrylamide (PAM) hydrogels (fracture strength of 32.0 kPa and elongation of 109.6%), the synthesized Ti3C2/PAM NC hydrogels exhibited greatly improved mechanical properties with fracture strengths of 66.5 to 102.7 kPa, compressive strengths of 400.6 to 819.4 kPa and elongations at break of 2158.6% to 3047.5% as the Ti3C2 content increases from 0.0145% to 0.0436%. The enhanced mechanical performances can be attributed to the honeycomb-like fine structure with uniform pores as well as more flexible polymer chains in NC hydrogel networks. When loaded with drugs, Ti3C2/PAM NC hydrogels exhibited good sustained-release performance, higher drug loading amounts (97.5-127.7 mg g-1) and higher percentage releases (62.1-81.4%), greatly superior to those of the BIS/PAM hydrogel (46.4 mg g-1, 45.0%). Our work reveals the application of MXene materials in the fabrication of NC hydrogels with enhanced mechanical and drug release behaviors.

RESUMO

A terahertz metamaterial resonator consisting of two rectangular strips embedded in a closed-ring resonator is designed and investigated in this paper that can simultaneously generate the classical electromagnetically induced transparency effect and two Fano resonance modes. The formation of the transparent window and the Fano dips can be attributed to the coupling of the localized resonance modes between the closed-ring resonator and the two embedded rectangular strips. The effect of embedded rectangular strip sizes on the transmitted performance is discussed, and it is found that the resonant performance of the transparent window and Fano effect depends mainly on the length of the rectangular strips in the longitudinal direction. Based on this, two different device applications related to the embedded rectangular strips are discussed. The metamaterial proposed here could open up new avenues toward the control of terahertz waves in many technology-related areas.

RESUMO

This paper gives the design of electromagnetically induced transparency effect using two U-shaped resonators with different opening directions (same direction and opposite direction). It is revealed that extremely similar transparency effect can be found for the two cases. The reason is that the two structures have the same sizes. However, the change in position of the two U-shaped resonators in the opposite opening has a significant effect on the transparent peak which is mainly reflected in the broadening of the broadband and the frequency shift of the working frequency, while there is almost no change in resonance performance for the same opening. We provide the field distributions for analyzing the causes of these different results. We believe these performance can guide future research.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: Chronic exposure to arsenic during pregnancy or early life continues to be a major global health problem worldwide, affecting hundreds of millions of people. However, its effects on birth size are uncertain. The aim of this study is to summarized the association between maternal arsenic exposure and birth size. METHODS: A comprehensive literature search was conducted on the maternal arsenic exposure and birth size (birth weight, birth length, head circumference and chest circumference) through databases (PubMed, Qvid Medline, Web of Science, Cochrane and EMBASE), the last search was in March 2019. Heterogeneity was testes by using the Q statistic and stratifying for epidemiological factors. The possibility of publication bias was assessed through Begg's test. RESULTS: A total of 12 studies provided sufficient data were included. Meta-analysis revealed that maternal arsenic exposure was associated with the decrease of birth weight (ß = -25.0 g; 95% CI: -41.0, -9.0) and head circumference (ß = -0.12 cm; 95% CI: -0.24, -0.01) in random-effect model, birth length (ß = -0.12 cm; 95% CI: -0.17, -0.07) in fixed-effect model, no significant reduction was suggested in chest circumference (ß = -0.74 cm; 95% CI: -1.78, 0.3). In addition, we found that the birth weight decreased stronger in women living in the Americas, or appling the exposure marker of urine. CONCLUSIONS: Maternal arsenic exposure is associated with the decrease of the birth weight, length and head circumference. Millions of people are still exposured to high-level arsenic, therefore, high quality epidemiologic studies that involve large samples are necessary to determine the precise relationships between maternal arsenic exposure with birth size. And that effective mitigation measures are also need to prevent arsenic exposure in women of reproductive age.

RESUMO

Various kinds of structure designs have been proposed to achieve the multiple-band metamaterial absorbers. However, the discrete distance of adjacent frequencies of multiple absorbers is considerably large, which will inevitably overlook a large amount of information hidden in the off-resonance absorption areas. Herein, a narrow discrete distance of dual-band terahertz absorber based on two pairs of an Au strip/dielectric layer backed by Au film is designed. Two nearly 100% absorptivities of resonance peaks having the discrete distance of only 0.30 THz are realized. The relative discrete distance of the device is 13.33%, and this value can be adjusted via the length change of an Au strip. Furthermore, we present two narrow discrete distances of a triple-band absorber through stacking one more pair of an Au strip and dielectric layer. Results prove that two discrete distances of only 0.14 THz and 0.17 THz in adjacent absorption modes of the first two and the last two are achieved, respectively; the relative discrete distances of them are respectively 6.57% and 7.22%, which are far from previous reports. Narrow discrete distances (or low values of relative discrete distance) of the multiple-band absorbers have a large number of applications in the investigation of some hidden information in very near frequencies.

RESUMO

StatsX (Statistics for X-STR) v2.0 is developed to facilitate the workflow for analysis of population data on X-chromosomal short tandem repeat (X-STR) marker. The interactive graphical and installable software can estimate allele/haplotype frequencies from female, male, and pooled samples and calculate forensic parameters by importing a single file. In addition, it is able to filter out the invalid raw data and export a series of pre-formatted Arlequin input files that are directly used for testing the significance of the Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (HWE), linkage disequilibrium (LD), and gender differentiation. As expected, all results of frequencies and forensic parameters can be saved as EXCEL workbooks and also plotted as bar or line graphs. Further, full concordance was obtained by recalculating frequencies and forensic parameters with other established software from a published Han Chinese population.

RESUMO

Broadband metamaterial absorbers are of critical importance in practical applications, but their obtainment approaches are quite complex at present. We demonstrate here that a fairly simple structure design formed by a rectangular-shaped resonator having an elongated slot can be utilized to achieve a broadband absorption response at terahertz frequencies. More than 50% absorption in a continuous frequency range of 1.62 THz (with a central frequency of 2.05 THz) can be gained, and its relative absorption bandwidth is 79.02%, which is superior to that of previous broadband absorption devices. The basic principle of the broadband absorption originates from the superposition of four different but narrowly separated resonance peaks that resulted from different response positions of the suggested resonator. Results further reveal that the broadband terahertz absorption performance (or its four resonance peaks) can be controlled by the resonator dimensions. The suggested method can provide a new type of design strategy to realize broadband integrated terahertz absorption devices.

RESUMO

In this paper, the following questions were investigated: the proportion of mass loss, the mass fraction of oil, the structure, composition and ultimate analysis of solid residues and gas products. By comparing the treatment effect of using both microwave and electric as the source of heat to dispose the oil-based drilling cuttings (OBDC), the advantages of microwave heating treatment were demonstrated. Meanwhile, the composition of liquid products by microwave pyrolysis was analyzed. The results show that the microwave heating is better than electric heating and the former can promote the pyrolysis of petroleum hydrocarbons. The results of component analysis of the liquid products from OBDC by microwave pyrolysis show that C12∼C20 components pyrolyze at 500 °C. At the same time, a mass of C21∼C24 components volatilize. At the temperature above 500 °C, the thermal cracking reactions of >C25 components occur and a maximum content of paraffin in liquid products is obtained. As the temperature increases, the components obtained by pyrolysis become more and more complex.

RESUMO

This work aimed at investigating electrocatalytic hydrodechlorination (ECH) mechanisms of chlorophenols (CPs) on a Pd-modified cathode. Experiments on the ECH of 2,4-dichlorophenol were conducted under extreme test conditions, i.e., with various buffer solutions and several sodium salt solutions as supporting electrolytes. Buffer solutions promote dechlorination due to their property of retarding the alkalinity of a solution. ECH was found to be significantly inhibited by sulfite. Experimental results showed that sulfite poisoning on Pd catalysts was reversible. Protonation may account, at least in part, for the observed high pH dependency of ECH, which proceeded rapidly, with lower apparent activation energy (E a) in the acidic electrolyte. In addition, pH influenced the selectivity of dechlorination of CPs. It was inferred that the ECH of CPs on the Pd-modified electrode was a preactivated electrocatalytic reaction.

RESUMO

The aim of the present work was to investigate the trace elements and the correlation with flavonoids from Sparganii rhizoma. The ICP-AES and ultraviolet-visible spectroscopy were employed to analyze trace elements and flavonoids. The concentrations of trace elements and flavonoids were calculated using standard curve. The content of flavonoids was expressed as rutin equivalents. The cluster analysis was applied to evaluate geographical features of S. rhizoma from different geographical regions. The correlation analysis was used to obtain the relationship between the trace elements and flavonoids. The results indicated that the 15 trace elements were measured and the K, Ca, Mg, Na, Mn, Al, Cu, and Zn are rich in Sparganii rhizome. The different producing regions samples were classified into four groups. There was a weak relationship between trace elements and flavonoids.

RESUMO

A simple, sensitive, and validated high-performance liquid chromatography-photodiode array method has been established for the simultaneous determination of anthraquinones and resveratrol in Polygonum Cillinerve (Nakai) Ohwi (Zhushaqi in Chinese). The evaluation was performed using a Sunfire C18 reversed-phase column with 30°C column temperature. The mobile phase was composed of a gradient elution of 0.5% acetic acid (solvent A) and methanol (solvent B) with flow rate of 1.0 mL/min. The detection wavelength was at 254 nm. The method developed and validated is simple, shows good linearity, sensitivity, precision, and recovery, and is applied to analyze anthraquinones and resveratrol in 13 batches of Zhushaqi. The results show that the target compounds of Zhushaqi are significantly different among these samples. Based on results of the statistical analysis, the samples collected from Funiu Mountain were clustered together, and the samples obtained from Bozhou Market were close together. The developed method can be a useful tool in quality control and used to evaluate difference and to identify the geographical area of Zhushaqi, and also to provide technical support for the pharmacological and clinical research of related drugs.

RESUMO

Two novel triphenylamine-based thiophene derivative monomers, 4-cyano-4',4″-di(4-methoxythiophen-2-yl)triphenylamine and 4-methoxy-4',4″-di(4-methoxythiophen-2-yl)triphenylamine, were successfully synthesized. The corresponding polymers including poly (4-cyano-4',4″-di(4-methoxythiophen-2-yl)triphenylamine) and poly (4-methoxy-4',4″-di(4-methoxythiophen-2-yl)triphenylamine) were electrochemically synthesized and characterized by multiple test method. The electrochemical measurements and spectroelectrochemical analyses revealed that both of the two polymers had quasi-reversible redox behavior and multi-electrochromic properties. The two polymer films showed reversible electrochemical oxidation, excellent optical contrasts in NIR region (62% at 1070 nm for the first polymer, and 86% at 1255 nm for the second polymer), satisfactory coloration efficiencies and fast switching times. The research on the application of the as prepared polymer in the fabrication of electrochromic device was also conducted, employing PCMTPA or PMMTPA as the anodically coloring materials.

RESUMO

The mammalian target of rapamycin (mTOR) is known to regulate cell proliferation and growth by controlling protein translation. Recently, it has been shown that mTOR signaling pathway is involved in long-term synaptic plasticity. However, the role of mTOR under different pain conditions is less clear. In this study, the spatiotemporal activation of mTOR that contributes to pain-related behaviors was investigated using a novel animal inflammatory pain model induced by BmK I, a sodium channel-specific modulator purified from scorpion venom. In this study, intraplantar injections of BmK I were found to induce the activation of mTOR, p70 ribosomal S6 protein kinase (p70 S6K) and eukaryotic initiation factor 4E-binding protein 1 (4E-BP1) in rat L5-L6 spinal neurons. In the spinal cord, mTOR, p70 S6K and 4E-BP1 were observed to be activated in the ipsilateral and contralateral regions, peaking at 1-2 h and recovery at 24 h post-intraplantar (i.pl.) BmK I administration. In addition, intrathecal (i.t.) injection of rapamycin - a specific inhibitor of mTOR - was observed to result in the reduction of spontaneous pain responses and the attenuation of unilateral thermal and bilateral mechanical hypersensitivity elicited by BmK I. Thus, these results indicate that the mTOR signaling pathway is mobilized in the induction and maintenance of pain-activated hypersensitivity.

RESUMO

Intraplantar (i.pl.) injection of BmK I, a receptor site 3-specific modulator of voltage-gated sodium channels (VGSCs) from the venom of scorpion Buthus martensi Karsch (BmK), was shown to induce long-lasting and spontaneous nociceptive responses as demonstrated through experiments utilizing primary thermal and mirror-imaged mechanical hypersensitivity with different time course of development in rats. In this study, microglia was activated on both sides of L4-L5 spinal cord by i.pl. injection of BmK I. Meanwhile, the activation of p38/MAPK in L4-L5 spinal cord was found to be co-expressed with OX-42, the cell marker of microglia. The unilateral thermal and bilateral mechanical pain hypersensitivity of rat induced by BmK I was suppressed in a dose-dependent manner following pretreatment with SB203580 (a specific inhibitor of p-p38). Interestingly, microglia activity was also reduced in the presence of SB203580, which suggests that BmK I-induced microglial activation is mediated by p38/MAPK pathway. Combined with previously published literature, the results of this study demonstrate that p38-dependent microglial activation plays a role in scorpion envenomation-induced pain-related behaviors.
