RESUMO

PURPOSE: To facilitate the assessment of choroid vascular layer thickness in patients with wet age-related macular degeneration (AMD) using artificial intelligence (AI). METHODS: We included 194 patients with wet AMD and 225 healthy participants. Choroid images were obtained using swept-source optical coherence tomography. The average Sattler layer-choriocapillaris complex thickness (SLCCT), Haller layer thickness (HLT), and choroidal thickness (CT) were auto-measured at 7 regions centered around the foveola using AI and subsequently compared between the 2 groups. RESULTS: The SLCCT was lower in the AMD group than in the control group (P < 0.05). The HLT was significantly higher in the AMD group than in the control group at the Tparafovea and T-perifovea in the total population (P < 0.05) and in the ≤70-year subgroup (P < 0.05). The CT was higher in the AMD group than in the control group, particularly at the N-perifovea, T-perifovea, and T-parafovea in the ≤70-year subgroup; Interestingly, it was lower in the AMD group than in the control group at the Nparafovea, N-fovea, foveola, and T-fovea in the >70-year subgroup (P < 0.05). CONCLUSION: This novel AI-based auto-measurement was more accurate, efficient, and detailed than manual measurements. SLCCT thinning was observed in wet AMD; however, CT changes depended on the interaction between HLT compensatory thickening and SLCCT thinning.

INTRODUCTION: This study aimed to compare retinal vascular parameters and density in patients with moyamoya disease using the optical coherence tomography angiography. METHODS: This clinical trial totally enrolls 78 eyes from 39 participants, and all these patients with moyamoya disease (N = 13) are set as experimental group and participants with health who matched with age and gender are considered as the control group (N = 26). Then all these participants receive optical coherence tomography angiography detection. Participants' general data are collected and analyzed. Skeleton density (SD) value, vessel density (VD) value, fractal dimension (FD) value, vessel diameter index (VDI) value, foveal avascular zone (FAZ) value are analyzed. RESULTS: A total of 39 participants are included in this study. The SD value in the experimental group was significantly lower than that in control group (0.175 [0.166, 0.181] vs. 0.184 [0.175, 0.188], p = 0.017). Similarly, the VD value in the experimental group was significantly lower than that in the control group (0.333 [0.320, 0.350] vs. 0.354 [0.337, 0.364], p = 0.024). Additionally, the FD value in the experimental group was significantly lower than that in the control group (2.088 [2.083, 2.094] vs. 2.096 [2.090, 2.101], p = 0.022). As for the VDI and FAZ, VDI and FAZ values in the experimental group were lower than those in the control group, there was no significant difference in VDI and FAZ values between the two groups. CONCLUSIONS: Our study, using non-invasive and rapid OCTA imaging, confirmed decreased retinal vascular parameters and density in patients with moyamoya disease.

OBJECTIVE: To investigate macula structure thickness and volume changes in patients with moyamoya disease (MMD). METHOD: In this cross-sectional study, we used artificial intelligence (AI) -assisted optical coherence tomography (OCT) to analyze the thickness and volume of macula in Moyamoya patients. ETDRS zoning divides the macula into nine different regions. In 15 patients with radial scanning OCT, the average thickness and volume of retina, RNFL, GCL, and choroid in these regions were measured. In 30 patients with radial or horizontal scanning OCT, based on the anatomical structure, the macula is divided into seven segments. Mean Sattler layer-choriocapillaris complex thickness (SLCCT), Haller layer thickness, and total choroidal thickness were measured for each segment using AI-assisted OCT. RESULTS: We recruited 30 patients (59 eyes) with MMD. In the 15 patients (29 eyes) who underwent radial scanning OCT, no significant change in retina, RNFL, GCL, and choroidal thickness was identified between the two groups (p > 0.05). There was no significant change in retina, RNFL, or choroidal volume between the two groups in different ETDRS macula regions (p > 0.05). The GCL volume in the macula's inner ring nasal portion (IN) was significantly lower. SLCCTs were considerably reduced in six macula regions in moyamoya groups (p < 0.05). There was no statistically significant change in Haller layer thickness. Only the nasal perifovea (PE_N) exhibited a significant variation in choroidal thickness. The Moyamoya group showed reduced choroidal thickness in PE_N segment. CONCLUSION: In patients with MMD, there is thinning of the Sattler layer-choriocapillaris complex in the choroid.

Hesperidin nanoparticles (HNPs) were made for the first time employing an antisolvent recrystallization technique in a double homogenate system with positive and negative clockwise rotation in order to completely use the underutilized nutritional components in citrus peel. Dimethyl sulfoxide (DMSO), ethanol, and deionized water were used as the solvents and antisolvents in the hesperidin solution preparation. Hesperidin solution concentration of 60.26 mg/mL, homogenization speed of 8257 rpm, antisolvent-to-solvent volume ratio of 6.93 mL/mL, and homogenization time of 3.15 min were the ideal experimental conditions. HNPs have to be at least 72.24 nm in size. The structures of the produced hesperidin samples and the raw hesperidin powder were identical, according to the findings of the FTIR, XRD, and TG characterization tests. The HNP sample had an in vitro absorption rate that was 5.63 and 4.23 times greater than that of the raw hesperidin powder, respectively. It was discovered that DMSO was more suited than ethanol for creating HNP particles. In the realms of dietary supplements, therapeutic applications, and health promotion, the HNPs produced by the ARDH technology would be a potential formulation on increasing uses for a wider range of nutraceuticals (synergistic).

BACKGROUND: To explore the efficacy and safety of laser peripheral iridoplasty (LPIp) with different energy levels and locations in the treatment of primary angle closure disease (PACD) assessed by swept-source anterior segment optical coherence tomography (AS-OCT). METHODS: We enrolled patients with PACD following best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), intraocular pressure (IOP), anterior chamber gonioscopy, ultrasound biomicroscopy(UBM), optic disc OCT, and visual field examinations. After Pentacam and AS-OCT measurements, the patients were randomly divided into four treatment groups for LPIp with two different energy levels (high vs. low energy) and two locations (far from the periphery vs. near the periphery) and combined with laser peripheral iridotomy. BCVA, IOP, pupil diameter, central anterior chamber depth, anterior chamber volume, anterior opening distance (AOD)500, AOD750, trabecular iris angle (TIA)500, and TIA750 in four quadrants before and after laser treatment were compared. RESULTS: We followed up 32 patients (64 eyes; average age, 61.80 ± 9.79 years; 8 patients/16 eyes per group) for up to 2 years. The IOP of all enrolled patients was decreased after surgery compared to that before (t = 3.297, P = 0.002), the volume of the anterior chamber was increased (t=-2.047, P = 0.047), and AOD500, AOD750, TIA500, and TIA750 were increased (all P < 0.05). Within-group comparisons showed that BCVA in the low-energy/far-periphery group was improved after surgery (P < 0.05). After surgery, the IOP was decreased in the two high-energy groups, whereas the volume of the anterior chamber, AOD500, AOD750, TIA500, and TIA750 were increased in all groups (all P < 0.05). However, when comparing every two groups, the high-energy/far-periphery group showed a stronger effect on pupil dilation than the low-energy/near-periphery group (P = 0.045). The anterior chamber volume in the high-energy/near-periphery group was larger than that in the high-energy/far-periphery group (P = 0.038). The change in TIA500 was for 6 points smaller in the low-energy/near-periphery group than in the low-energy/far-periphery group (P = 0.038). Other parameters showed no significant group differences. CONCLUSION: LPIp combined with iridotomy can effectively reduce IOP, increase anterior chamber volume, increase chamber angle opening distance, and widen the trabecular iris angle. Intraoperatively, high-energy laser spots positioned one spot diameter from the scleral spur can obtain the best effect and safety. Swept-source AS-OCT can safely and effectively quantify the anterior chamber angle.

The flavonoids myricetin and dihydromyricetin are significant components of Hovenia acerba seed. In this work, myricetin and dihydromyricetin were extracted from Hovenia acerba seed using an ultrasound-assisted technique, and the extraction parameters were adjusted using the response surface design approach. HPLC was used to assess the yield of myricetin and dihydromyricetin. According to the data, myricetin and dihydromyricetin yields were 0.53 mg/g and 4.06 mg/g at a 60 % ethanol solution concentration, 180 W of ultrasonic irradiation power, a 20 mL/g ratio of liquid to solid, and a 40 °C optimal extraction temperature. The aforementioned findings are virtually in agreement with the experimental findings suggested by the model. The study mentioned above thus offers a means of separating and developing useful components of natural goods.

To create genistein particles, a brand-new antisolvent recrystallization technique was employed. The response surface approach was utilized to optimize the single factor test findings, which were acquired via the preliminary tests. The ideal liquid-to-liquid ratio was 9, the solution concentration was 21 mg/mL, the nozzle diameter was 700 µm, the feed rate was 39.65 mL/min, and the homogenization rate was 1500 rpm. The smallest mean particle size measured was 202.782 nm. SEM was used to study the powder's morphology, while thermal analysis and infrared imaging were used to evaluate its characteristics. The homogeneous antisolvent recrystallization method-prepared GMP has a better dissolving rate and stronger antioxidant activity when compared to genistein powder. The antisolvent recrystallization approach used in this study, which uses low-speed homogenizing instead of conventional grinding and homogenizing, can successfully reduce particle size, improve bioavailability, and use less energy. This topic may thus be made popular because it has real-world applications.

Objective@#To describe the prevalence and association of sleep quality and anxiety-depression co-morbid symptoms among nursing students, in order to provide a reference basis for promoting the development of nursing students mental health.@*Methods@#Using a prospective study design, baseline survey was conducted in January 2019 among a random cluster sample of 1 716 individuals in three medical universities in Hefei, Anhui Province, and a follow-up survey was conducted in October 2019, with a valid number of 1 573 individuals after matching with the baseline survey. The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) was used to assess nursing students sleep quality, and the Depression Anxiety Stress Scale (DASS-21) to assess the anxiety-depression comorbid symptoms.@*Results@#The detection rates of anxiety-depression co-morbidities among nursing students at baseline and follow-up survey were 16.9% and 18.2%, respectively, and the detection rates of poor sleep quality among nursing students at baseline and follow-up survey were 10.1% and 10.3%, respectively. The results of the binary Logistic regression model showed that baseline PSQI score were positively associated with the risk of anxiety-depression co-morbid symptoms among nursing students at baseline ( OR=1.49, 95%CI =1.40-1.59) and after nine months of follow-up ( OR=1.22, 95%CI =1.16-1.28). Furthermore, the influence of baseline sleep quality on the risk of anxiety-depression co-morbid symptoms were mainly concentrated in the five dimensions of sleep time, sleep efficiency, sleep disorders, hypnotic drugs and daytime dysfunction, and such effects of sleep time, sleep disorders and daytime dysfunction still existed in the follow-up investigation.@*Conclusion@#Poor sleep quality of nursing students can increase the risk of anxiety-depression co-morbidities. Improving sleep quality of nursing students has a positive effect on improving their mental health.

BACKGROUND: The mortality and morbidity of hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) are still unacceptably high, despite decades of extensive studies. Aerobic glycolysis is a hallmark of cancer metabolism, closely relating to invasion and metastasis of HCC. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are involved in the regulation of aerobic glycolysis. miR-183-5p, an oncogenic miRNA, is highly expressed in HCC, but the regulatory mechanism of miR-183-5p in migration, invasion and aerobic glycolysis in HCC remains unclear. PURPOSE: To elucidate whether miR-183-5p affects aerobic glycolysis to regulate the migration and invasion of HCC, and to explore its regulatory mechanism. METHODS: We attempted to observe the effects of miR-183-5p on the migration and invasion of HepG2 cells by a wound-healing assay and Transwell assays. The effect of miR-183-5p on glycolysis was determined by glucose uptake and lactate generation. Western blot and qPCR were used to detect the relevant proteins and miRNA expression. RESULTS: Our results show that miR-183-5p promoted migration and invasion, enhanced glycolysis via increasing glucose uptake and lactate generation, and up-regulated glycolysis-related gene (PKM2, HK2, LDHA, GLUT1) expression in HepG2 cells. Further experiments indicated that miR-183-5p could decrease PTEN expression, but increased Akt, p-Akt and mTOR expression in HepG2 cells. CONCLUSION: These findings suggest that miR-183-5p may promote HCC migration and invasion via increasing aerobic glycolysis through targeting PTEN and then activating Akt/mTOR signaling.
