RESUMO

The Japanese Home-health Apparatus Industrial Association is an official independent organization comprising ten departments. That concerned with home electronic sphygmomanometers, which has seven participants from different Japanese manufacturers, has already undertaken and is currently involved in various activities related to voluntary standards for performance validation and quality assurance. Because Japanese companies form a large proportion of manufacturers, these activities are important in terms of autonomic regulation. Although many improvements have been made to home electronic sphygmomanometers, some problems still remain unresolved, especially in terms of measurement reliability and easy operation by lay people. Another aspect of the department's work relates to making proposals on major validation standards, such as those of the Association for the Advancement of Medical Instrumentation, the British Hypertension Society and Comité Européen de Normalisation (CEN). Clinical validation should be discussed in order to define a more accurate standard method of measurement using auscultation and more appropriate criteria that are unaffected by primary blood pressure variation.

RESUMO

The Inhibitory effect of N-ethoxycarbonyl-2-ethoxy-1,2-dihydroquinoline (EEDQ), a hydrohobic carboxyl modifying reagent, on the N,N'-dicyclohexylcarbodiimide (DCCD)-sensitive Na+/H(+)-antiporter in Archaebacterial H. halobium, was studied. The inhibition time course suggests that a single carboxyl residue is modified by EEDQ. The profile of pH dependence of EEDQ effect and the competitive binding of [14C]-DCCD and EEDQ indicate that EEDQ does not compete with DCCD for the same site but modifies one of the two functional H+ binding sites previously reported [Murakami and Konishi (1989) Arch. Biochem. Biophys. 271, 515-523].

RESUMO

A new selective and differential agar medium, polymyxin-mannose-tellurite (PMT) agar was devised to differentiate easily colonies of Vibrio cholerae O1 from those of V. cholerae non-O1. The differentiation between colonies of the two vibrios is based on mannose-fermentation. Colonies of V. cholerae O1 on the agar are agglutinated with O1 antiserum of V. cholerae much more easily than those on thiosulfate-citrate-bile salts-sucrose (TCBS) agar.

RESUMO

A total of 249 strains of mesophilic Aeromonas including 179 A. hydrophila and 70 A. caviae were tested for production of cholera-like enterotoxin by reversed passive latex agglutination (RPLA) assay. A cholera-like enterotoxin neutralized with cholera antitoxin was demonstrated in the culture filtrates from eight (4.5%) of the 179 A. hydrophila strains, while none of A. caviae strains revealed the enterotoxin production in the test. Production of the cholera-like enterotoxin in the eight strains of A. hydrophila was also confirmed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA).

RESUMO

A simple method for the separation and identification of Bacteroides fragilis from other Bacteroides species through the use of oxgall-impregnated filter paper disks is described. As in the antibiotic sensitivity test, filter paper disks containing defined amounts of bile salt were placed on a lawn of bacterial cells on Gifu anaerobic medium agar plates. Bile-resistant bacteria were identified as strains of Bacteroides fragilis after incubation in anaerobic jars containing hydrogen and carbon dioxide generators at 35 C for 24 hr. The optimum concentration of bile salt, yielding results very similar to those of the conventional tube method, was determined to be 25 mg per disk, empirically. Since this method is easy to perform, time saving, economical and gives clear results, it may be readily used as a daily routine test in the clinical microbiology laboratory.
