RESUMO

A rare case of ectopic splenic tissue in the liver is presented which mimicked a liver tumor. It is considered that some splenic tissue was seeded in the liver during the splenectomy that the patient underwent 23 years ago. Computed tomography (CT), magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and angiographic features of this lesion were almost indistinguishable from those of other liver tumors.

RESUMO

The purpose of the present study was to determine whether all patients with non-small cell lung cancer, clinically defined as stage 1 or 2, should have examinations to determine the presence of distant metastatic (M1) disease. The survival rates of patients who underwent the examinations and those who did not were compared. In all groups, the examinations had in no way positively affected survival. The 33 patients in whom distant recurrence had occurred within 12 months of curative operation, were then evaluated to establish the relationship between the recurrent site and the preoperative examination: negative scans on the examination failed to predict the low incidence of early distant recurrence. Those data suggest that the routine use of radionuclide or CT scans is of no benefit to asymptomatic patients with local, early disease.

RESUMO

Computed tomography (CT) findings of 8 cases of thymic hyperplasia in children aged 7 to 15 years were retrospectively analyzed in comparison to 8 cases of tumors of anterior mediastinum. All cases of thymic hyperplasia retained a somewhat triangular or arrowhead-like shape at least on one side while tumors showed bilateral globular contour with lobulated border. No compression of the air way or pleural fluid was observed in thymic hyperplasia. These CT features are useful for making a diagnosis of thymic hyperplasia when an older child is presented with an anterior mediastinal mass on chest X-ray.

RESUMO

The computed tomography manifestations of 39 patients with histologically proved anterior mediastinal tumors were studied by categorizing the tumors by content as solid homogeneous, cystic homogeneous, and heterogeneous. Among 24 solid tumors, thymomas were easily distinguished by their lack of invasiveness from malignant lymphomas and germ-cell tumors. Among 11 cystic tumors, pericardial and thymic cysts were differentiated from cystic teratomas and bronchogenic cysts by their lack of recognizable capsules with or without calcification. The differential diagnosis of a variety of tumors of the anterior mediastinum was facilitated by computed tomography in all but a few exceptional cases.

RESUMO

The computed tomographic (CT) findings in seven cases of mediastinal bronchogenic cysts were reviewed. Two showed homogeneous high density masses with CT numbers of 97 and 89 Hounsfield units (HU). One had a CT number of 40 HU. Four cases had low density masses with CT numbers ranging from -3 to 20 HU; however, two of these four low density masses had either high density outer walls or deposits. All but one of the patients' chest radiographs revealed similar water density masses. Radiographic evidence of calcium deposits was previously considered rare, but its demonstration with CT appears to be common in mediastinal bronchogenic cysts.

RESUMO

The computed tomographic (CT) appearance of a choledochal cyst is reported. Although the appearance on the precontrast scan was highly suggestive of this diagnosis, the definitive was made on CT following the intravenous administration of a biliary contrast agent.
