RESUMO

This paper introduces a specialized robotic system under development for radiosurgery using a small-sized linear accelerator. The robotic system is a 5-DOF manipulator that can be installed above a patient to make an upper hemispherical workspace centered in a target point. In order to determine the optimal lengths of the link, we consider the requirements for the workspace of a linear accelerator for radiosurgery. A more suitable kinematic structure than conventional industrial manipulators is proposed, and the kinematic analysis is also provided. A graphic simulator is implemented and used for dynamic analysis. Based on those results, a prototype manipulator and its control system are under development.

Amorphous Si (a-Si)/crystalline Si (c-Si) heterojunction (SiHJ) can serve as highly efficient and robust photoelectrodes for solar fuel generation. Low carrier recombination in the photoelectrodes leads to high photocurrents and photovoltages. The SiHJ was designed and fabricated into both photoanode and photocathode with high oxygen and hydrogen evolution efficiency, respectively, by simply coating of a thin layer of catalytic materials. The SiHJ photoanode with sol-gel NiOx as the catalyst shows a current density of 21.48 mA/cm(2) at the equilibrium water oxidation potential. The SiHJ photocathode with 2 nm sputter-coated Pt catalyst displays excellent hydrogen evolution performance with an onset potential of 0.640 V and a solar to hydrogen conversion efficiency of 13.26%, which is the highest ever reported for Si-based photocathodes.

We report an ultrathin NiOx catalyzed Si np(+) junction photoanode for a stable and efficient solar driven oxygen evolution reaction (OER) in water. A stable semi-transparent ITO/Au/ITO hole conducting oxide layer, sandwiched between the OER catalyst and the Si photoanode, is used to protect the Si from corrosion in an alkaline working environment, enhance the hole transportation, and provide a pre-activation contact to the NiOx catalyst. The NiOx catalyzed Si photoanode generates a photocurrent of 1.98 mA cm(-2) at the equilibrium water oxidation potential (EOER = 0.415 V vs. NHE in 1 M NaOH solution). A thermodynamic solar-to-oxygen conversion efficiency (SOCE) of 0.07% under 0.51-sun illumination is observed. The successful development of a low cost, highly efficient, and stable photoelectrochemical electrode based on earth abundant elements is essential for the realization of a large-scale practical solar fuel conversion.

Typical dye sensitized solar cells (DSSCs) exhibit a severe reduction of power conversion efficiency when the cell size is increased. In order to cope with this issue, we have investigated the use of anodized TiO(2) nanotubes on Ti foil in combination with the standard TiO(2) nanoparticle paste coated anode structure. The presence of nanotubes in the anode structure enabled a significant mitigation of the size-dependent deterioration of the DSSC performance, with a trend of much milder decrease of the efficiency as a function of the cell dimension up to 9 cm(2). The observed improvement is partly attributed to the elimination of fluorine-doped tin oxide glass in the anode structure, as well as the enhanced charge collection via the nanotube coated Ti substrate, resulting from enhanced mechanical and electrical connections and possibly improved light trapping. The introduction of TiO(2) nanotubes on the Ti foil substrate led to a substantial improvement of the J(sc) current density.

We previously isolated a novel compound, HY251, with the molecular structure of 3-propyl-2-vinyl-1,2,3,3a,3b,6,7,7a,8,8adecahydrocyclopenta[ a]indene-3,3a,7a,8a-tetraol from the roots of Aralia continentalis. The current study was designed to evaluate the detailed molecular mechanisms underlying the apoptotic induction by HY251 in human ovarian cancer PA-1 cells. TUNEL assay and Western blot analyses revealed an appreciable apoptotic induction in PA-1 cells treated with 60 µM of HY251 for 24 h. This apoptotic induction was associated with caspase-8-dependent Bid cleavage, which in turn resulted in the formation of pro-apoptotic truncated Bid (tBid), and activation of caspase-9 and -3, as well as the cleavage of poly(ADP-ribose) polymerase (PARP). Moreover, we found that this death event was also associated with the significant upregulation and activation of the p53 tumor-suppressor protein through phosphorylation at Ser15. Therefore, we suggest that HY251 may be a potent cancer chemotherapeutic candidate for the treatment of ovarian cancer.

Cardiovascular complications have been major concerns in the treatment of diabetes, and up to 80% of all deaths in diabetic patients are linked to cardiovascular problems. Impaired angiogenesis is one of the most serious symptoms associated with diabetes, resulting in delayed wound healing and lower limb amputation. Endothelial progenitor cells (EPCs), a subpopulation of adult stem cells, are recruited from bone marrow to the injured vessel to promote endothelial regeneration and neovascularization, playing an important role in angiogenesis. Interestingly, several clinical studies have showed that the number of recruited EPCs is reduced and their function is decreased under diabetic conditions, implying that diabetic EPC dysfunction may contribute to defective angiogenesis and resultant cardiovascular complications in diabetes. To recover the functional abilities of diabetic EPCs and to address possible application of EPC cell therapy to diabetic patients, some studies provided explanations for diabetic EPC dysfunction including increased oxidative stress, involvement of the inflammatory response, alteration in the nitric oxide pathway and reduced signals for EPC recruitment. This review discusses clinical evidence of impairment of EPC functions under diabetic conditions and the suggested mechanisms for diabetic EPC dysfunction.
