RESUMO
The authors report the case of a 26-year-old woman with hepatomegaly, who had recurrent and progressive nausea and abdominal pain. Computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated fatty replacement of the entire pancreas resulting from cystic fibrosis. The pulmonary disease was totally asymptomatic. Fatty replacement of the pancreas is the most frequent pattern in older patients with cystic fibrosis. This pattern correlates with pancreatic exocrine dysfunction.

We report the first case of acute acalculous cholecystitis associated with primary antiphospholipid-antibody syndrome. The diagnosis was serological and was based on positive tests for lupus anticoagulant or anticardiolipin antibodies. The treatment was exclusively medical. Cholecystitis was cured with low-molecular weight heparin and oral anticoagulants. A rapid diagnosis can prevent lack of therapeutic errors such as surgery, antibiotherapy or corticotherapy, and long-term anticoagulant treatment can be proposed to prevent recurrent thrombosis.

One hundred fifty-two institutionalized persons with late-stage dementia were rated with a geriatric developmental screening scale that notes cognitive, language, sensorimotor, and self-care abilities. The results showed that the loss of functional abilities in late-stage dementias seems to occur in reverse order of their development in childhood. Developmental congruence was noted within these persons regardless of diagnosis. In addition, the average functional age rating correlated well with scores from the Folstein Mini Mental State examination (MMS) (Folstein, Folstein, & McHugh, 1975): The close correlation between scores indicates that the MMS is a fast and simple tool for predicting not only cognitive impairment but also the approximate stage of functional development.
