RESUMO

Photocatalysis, a promising solution to environmental challenges, relies on the generation and utilization of photogenerated charge carriers within photocatalysts. However, the recombination of these carriers often limits efficiency. Heterostructures, especially Cu2O/TiO2, have emerged as effective solutions to enhance charge separation. This study systematically explores the effect of interfacial morphologies on the band bending within Cu2O/TiO2 anatase heterostructures by employing density functional theory. Through this study, eight distinct interfaces are identified and analyzed, revealing a consistent staggered-type band alignment. Despite variations in band edge positions, systematic charge transfer from Cu2O to TiO2 is observed across all interfaces. The proposed band bending configurations would suggest enhanced charge separation and photocatalytic activity under ultraviolet illumination due to a Z-scheme configuration. This theoretical investigation provides valuable insights into the interplay between interfacial morphology, band bending, and charge transfer for advancing the understanding of fundamental electronic mechanisms in heterostructures.

Ermp1 is a putative metalloprotease from Schizosaccharomyces pombe and a member of the Fxna peptidases. Although their function is unknown, orthologous proteins from rats and humans have been associated with the maturation of ovarian follicles and increased ER stress. This study focuses on proposing the first prediction of PPI by comparison of the interologues between humans and yeasts, as well as the molecular docking and dynamics of the M28 domain of Ermp1 with possible target proteins. As results, 45 proteins are proposed that could interact with the metalloprotease. Most of these proteins are related to the transport of Ca2+ and the metabolism of amino acids and proteins. Docking and molecular dynamics suggest that the M28 domain of Ermp1 could hydrolyze leucine and methionine residues of Amk2, Ypt5 and Pex12. These results could support future experimental investigations of other Fxna peptidases, such as human ERMP1.

Objective: To characterize concentrations of adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH), insulin, and thyroxine (T4) at 2 times of the year in healthy horses in Saskatchewan. Animals and procedure: A prospective, observational study was carried out in 52 healthy, client-owned horses. Inclusion criteria were no recent travel outside of Saskatchewan, normal physical examination findings, and no history or evidence of ongoing illness. Blood concentrations of ACTH, insulin and T4 were determined by chemiluminescence. Samples were collected in spring and fall and compared using the paired Student's t-test or Wilcoxon signed-rank test. Generalized estimating equations were used to assess the associations between ACTH, T4, and insulin concentrations and gender, age, season, body condition score, glucose concentration, and breed. Results: There were increases in both ACTH and insulin concentrations in the fall compared to spring (P < 0.001 and P = 0.001, respectively). Other than season, insulin concentration was associated with breed, whereas ACTH concentration was associated with age. Finally, T4 concentration was associated with breed and glucose concentration, but not with season. Conclusion and clinical relevance: These results highlighted the differences between spring and fall concentrations of both ACTH and insulin in healthy horses residing in the Canadian prairie provinces, which are known for extreme differences in summer and winter temperatures as well as day length. Geographically adjusted reference values are necessary to account for these variations, to improve diagnostic accuracy. This is the first published Canadian study evaluating these factors and their associations with hormone concentrations in clinically healthy animals.


Concentrations sanguines printanières et automnales d'hormone adrénocorticotrope, d'insuline et de thyroxine chez des chevaux en bonne santé en Saskatchewan. Objectif: Caractériser les concentrations d'hormone adrénocorticotrope (ACTH), d'insuline et de thyroxine (T4) à 2 moments de l'année chez des chevaux en bonne santé en Saskatchewan. Animaux et procédure: Une étude observationnelle prospective a été réalisée auprès de 52 chevaux en bonne santé appartenant à des clients. Les critères d'inclusion étaient l'absence de voyage récent à l'extérieur de la Saskatchewan, les résultats normaux de l'examen physique et l'absence d'antécédents ou de signes de maladie persistante. Les concentrations sanguines d'ACTH, d'insuline et de T4 ont été déterminées par chimiluminescence. Des échantillons ont été collectés au printemps et à l'automne et comparés à l'aide du test de Student apparié ou du test du rang de signe de Wilcoxon. Des équations d'estimation généralisées ont été utilisées pour évaluer les associations entre les concentrations d'ACTH, de T4 et d'insuline et le sexe, l'âge, la saison, l'état corporel, la concentration de glucose et la race. Résultats: Il y avait une augmentation des concentrations d'ACTH et d'insuline à l'automne par rapport au printemps (P < 0,001 et P = 0,001, respectivement). Hormis la saison, la concentration d'insuline était associée à la race, alors que la concentration d'ACTH était associée à l'âge. Enfin, la concentration de T4 était associée à la race et à la concentration en glucose, mais pas à la saison. Conclusion et pertinence clinique: Ces résultats ont mis en évidence les différences entre les concentrations printanières et automnales d'ACTH et d'insuline chez les chevaux en bonne santé résidant dans les provinces des Prairies canadiennes, reconnues pour leurs différences extrêmes de températures estivales et hivernales ainsi que de durée du jour. Des valeurs de référence géographiquement ajustées sont nécessaires pour tenir compte de ces variations et améliorer la précision du diagnostic. Il s'agit de la première étude canadienne publiée évaluant ces facteurs et leurs associations avec les concentrations d'hormones chez des animaux cliniquement sains.(Traduit par Dr Serge Messier).

The orthorhombic phase of FeNbO4, a promising anode material for solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs), exhibits good catalytic activity toward hydrogen oxidation. However, the low electronic conductivity of the material specifically in the pure structure without defects or dopants limits its practical applications as an SOFC anode. In this study, we have employed density functional theory (DFT + U) calculations to explore the bulk and electronic properties of two types of doped structures, Fe0.9375A0.0625NbO4 and FeNb0.9375B0.0625O4 (A, B = Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Co, Ni) and the oxygen-deficient structures Fe0.9375A0.0625NbO3.9375 and FeNb0.9375B0.0625O3.9375, where the dopant is positioned in the first nearest neighbor site to the oxygen vacancy. Our DFT simulations have revealed that doping in the Fe sites is energetically favorable compared to doping in the Nb site, resulting in significant volume expansion. The doping process generally requires less energy when the O-vacancy is surrounded by one Fe and two Nb ions. The simulated projected density of states of the oxygen-deficient structures indicates that doping in the Fe site, particularly with Ti and V, considerably narrows the bandgap to ∼0.5 eV, whereas doping with Co at the Nb sites generates acceptor levels close to 0 eV. Both doping schemes, therefore, enhance electron conduction during SOFC operation.

The development of pure-blue perovskite light-emitting diodes (PeLEDs) faces challenges of spectral stability and low external quantum efficiency (EQE) due to phase separation in mixed halide compositions. Perovskite quantum dots (QDs) with strong confinement effects are promising alternatives to achieve high-quality pure-blue PeLEDs, yet their performance is often hindered by the poor size distribution and high trap density. A strategy combining thermodynamic control with a polishing-driven ligand exchange process to produce high-quality QDs is developed. The strongly-confined pure-blue (≈470 nm) CsPbBr3 QDs exhibit narrow size distribution (12% dispersion) and are achieved in Br-rich ion environment based on growth thermodynamic control. Subsequent polishing-driven ligand exchange process removes imperfect surface sites and replaces initial long-chain organic ligands with short-chain benzene ligands. The resulting QDs exhibit high photoluminescence quantum yield (PLQY) to near-unity. The resulting PeLEDs exhibit a pure-blue electroluminescence (EL) emission at 472 nm with narrow full-width at half-maximum (FWHM) of 25 nm, achieving a maximum EQE of 10.7% and a bright maximum luminance of 7697 cd m-2. The pure-blue PeLEDs show ultrahigh spectral stability under high voltage, a low roll-off of EQE, and an operational half-lifetime (T50) of 127 min at an initial luminance of 103 cd m-2 under continuous operation.

CdS, characterized by its comparatively narrow energy band gap (∼2.4 eV), is an appropriate material for prospective use as a photoanode in photoelectrochemical water splitting. Regrettably, it encounters several obstacles for practical and large-scale applications, including issues such as bulk carrier recombination and diminished conductivity. Here, we have tried to address these challenges by fabricating a novel photoelectrode (ZnO/CdS) composed of one-dimensional ZnO nanorods (NRs) decorated with two-dimensional CdS nanosheets (NSs). A facile two-step chemical method comprising electrodeposition along with chemical bath deposition is employed to synthesize the ZnO NRs, CdS NSs, and ZnO/CdS nanostructures. The prepared nanostructures have been investigated by UV-visible absorption spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and scanning electron microscopy. The fabricated ZnO/CdS nanostructures have shown enhanced photoelectrochemical properties due to the improvement of the semiconductor junction surface area and thereby enhanced visible light absorption. The incorporation of CdS NSs has been further found to promote the rate of the charge separation and transfer process. Subsequently, the fabricated ZnO/CdS photoelectrodes achieved a photocurrent conversion efficiency 3 times higher than that of a planar ZnO NR photoanode and showed excellent performance under visible light irradiation. The highest applied bias photon-to-current conversion efficiency (% ABPE) of about ∼0.63% has been obtained for the sample with thicker CdS NSs on ZnO NRs with a photocurrent density of ∼1.87 mA/cm2 under AM 1.5 G illumination. The newly synthesized nanostructures further demonstrate that the full photovoltaic capacity of nanomaterials is yet to be exhausted.

This dataset offers images of mouse brains impacted by photothrombotic stroke in the sensorimotor cortex published by Weber et al. NeuroImage (2024). Data is gathered using two primary techniques: (1) whole-brain ex-vivo magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and (2) 40 µm thick coronal histological sections that undergo immunofluorescence staining with NeuroTrace. Infarct areas and volumes are assessed through MRI at two distinct time frames-three days (acute) and 28 days (chronic) following photothrombotic stroke induction. Subsequently, the brains are sectioned into 40 µm thick coronal slices, stained with NeuroTrace, and imaged as whole sections. The dataset holds considerable value for reuse, particularly for researchers focused on stroke volume estimation methods as well as those interested in comparing the efficacy of MRI and histological techniques.

This review presents comparative information corresponding to the progress in knowledge of some aspects of infection by the porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) and severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) coronaviruses. PEDV is an alphacoronavirus of great economic importance due to the million-dollar losses it generates in the pig industry. PEDV has many similarities to the SARS-CoV-2 betacoronavirus that causes COVID-19 disease. This review presents possible scenarios for SARS-CoV-2 based on the collected literature on PEDV and the tools or strategies currently developed for SARS-CoV-2 that would be useful in PEDV research. The speed of the study of SARS-CoV-2 and the generation of strategies to control the pandemic was possible due to the knowledge derived from infections caused by other human coronaviruses such as severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS) and middle east respiratory syndrome (MERS). Therefore, from the information obtained from several coronaviruses, the current and future behavior of SARS-CoV-2 could be inferred and, with the large amount of information on the virus that causes COVID-19, the study of PEDV could be improved and probably that of new emerging and re-emerging coronaviruses.

Stroke volume is a key determinant of infarct severity and an important metric for evaluating treatments. However, accurate estimation of stroke volume can be challenging, due to the often confined 2-dimensional nature of available data. Here, we introduce a comprehensive semi-automated toolkit to reliably estimate stroke volumes based on (1) whole brains ex-vivo magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) and (2) brain sections that underwent immunofluorescence staining. We located and quantified infarct areas from MRI three days (acute) and 28 days (chronic) after photothrombotic stroke induction in whole mouse brains. MRI results were compared with measures obtained from immunofluorescent histologic sections of the same brains. We found that infarct volume determined by post-mortem MRI was highly correlated with a deviation of only 6.6 % (acute) and 4.9 % (chronic) to the measurements as determined in the histological brain sections indicating that both methods are capable of accurately assessing brain tissue damage (Pearson r > 0.9, p < 0.001). The Dice similarity coefficient (DC) showed a high degree of coherence (DC > 0.8) between MRI-delineated regions of interest (ROIs) and ROIs obtained from histologic sections at four to six pre-defined landmarks, with histology-based delineation demonstrating higher inter-operator similarity compared to MR images. We further investigated stroke-related scarring and post-ischemic angiogenesis in cortical peri­infarct regions and described a negative correlation between GFAP+fluorescence intensity and MRI-obtained lesion size.

RESUMO

Stem cell therapy is an emerging treatment paradigm for stroke patients with remaining neurological deficits. While allogeneic cell transplants overcome the manufacturing constraints of autologous grafts, they can be rejected by the recipient's immune system, which identifies foreign cells through the human leukocyte antigen (HLA) system. The heterogeneity of HLA molecules in the human population would require a very high number of cell lines, which may still be inadequate for patients with rare genetic HLAs. Here, we outline key progress in genetic HLA engineering in pluripotent stem and derived cells to evade the host's immune system, reducing the number of allogeneic cell lines required, and examine safety measures explored in both preclinical studies and upcoming clinical trials.

BACKGROUND: Population-based practice patterns in the United States reveal continent diversions are only performed in 8%-10.4% of patients.1-4 Ideally, for patients undergoing radical cystectomy the choice of urinary diversion should be influenced by clinical factors and patient preference, with discussions surrounding quality of life. Unfortunately, receipt of continent diversion has been shown to be influenced by a plethora of other factors such as surgeon preference/training, geography, socioeconomic status, gender, and hospital volume.1-3 Thus, by providing detailed instruction and long-term follow-up, we hope to mitigate some of these disparities by changing the perceptions regarding feasibility and complications of continent diversions. OBJECTIVE: To provide step-by-step instruction and to report long-term clinical outcomes in bladder cancer patients receiving an Indiana pouch continent cutaneous urinary diversion (CCUD) after robot-assisted radical cystectomy. DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: After Institutional Review Board approval, a prospectively maintained bladder cancer database was queried for patients with T1-T4, N0-N1, M0 bladder cancer undergoing radical cystectomy with CCUD at a tertiary referral center from 2004 to 2020. OUTCOME MEASUREMENTS AND STATISTICAL ANALYSIS: Complications at 30- and 90-day were recorded according to the Clavien-Dindo classification. Continence rates were recorded by chart review. RESULTS AND LIMITATIONS: A total of 97 patients were included with a median follow-up of 93months. Clinically, 91.8% had ≤T2 disease and 29.9% received neoadjuvant chemotherapy. The median length of surgery was 8.0 hours, length of hospital stay was 8.3days, and urinary continence rate was 99.0%. The overall complication rate was 73.2% and 76.5% at 30- and 90-day, respectively. The major complication rate (Clavien III-V) was 17.5% at 30-day and 22.7% at 90-day. The most common major complications were abdominal infection and uretero-colonic stricture. The readmission rate was 21.4% and median overall survival was 108months. CONCLUSION: CCUD provides exceptional functional outcomes with acceptable complication rates compared to other diversion types. CCUD is a reliable reconstructive option and with this step-by-step video as a reference, we hope it will be offered to more patients.

Photocatalysis has gained significant attention and interest as an environmentally friendly and sustainable approach to the production of hydrogen through water splitting and the reduction and conversion of CO2. Copper tungstate (CuWO4) is a highly promising candidate for these applications owing to its appropriate bandgap and superior stability under different conditions. However, the redox behavior of the CuWO4 surfaces under different environments and their impact on the morphology of the material nanoparticles, as well as the electronic properties, remain poorly understood. In this study, we have employed density functional theory calculations to investigate the properties of the bulk and pristine surfaces of CuWO4 and how the latter are impacted by oxygen chemisorption under the conditions required for photocatalytic water splitting and carbon dioxide reduction processes. We have calculated the lattice parameters and electronic properties of the bulk phase, as well as the surface energies of all possible nonpolar, stoichiometric, and symmetric terminations of the seven low-Miller index surfaces and found that the (010) and (110) facets are the thermodynamically most stable. The surface-phase diagrams were used to derive the equilibrium crystal morphologies, which show that the pristine (010) surface is prominent under synthesis and room conditions. Our crystal morphologies suggest that the partially oxidized (110) surface and the partially reduced (011) surface may play an important role in the photocatalytic splitting of water and CO2 conversion, respectively. Our results provide a comprehensive understanding of the CuWO4 surfaces under the conditions of important photocatalytic applications.

Social relationships, affiliative social attachments, are important for many species. The best studied types of relationships are monogamous pair bonds. However, it remains unclear how generalizable models of pair bonding are across types of social attachments. Zebra finches are a fascinating system to explore the neurobiology of social relationships because they form various adult bonds with both same- and opposite-sex partners. To test whether different bonds are supported by a single brain network, we quantified individuals' neuroendocrine state after either 24 h or 2 weeks of co-housing with a novel same- or opposite-sex partner. We defined neuroendocrine state by the expression of 22 genes related to 4 major signaling pathways (dopamine, steroid, nonapeptide, and opioid) in six brain regions associated with affiliation or communication [nucleus accumbens (NAc), nucleus taeniae of the amygdala (TnA), medial preoptic area (POM), and periaqueductal gray (PAG), ventral tegmental area, and auditory cortex]. Overall, we found dissociable effects of social contexts (same- or opposite-sex partnerships) and duration of co-housing. Social bonding impacted the neuroendocrine state of four regions in males (NAc, TnA, POM, and PAG) and three regions in females (NAc, TnA, and POM). Monogamous pair bonding specifically appeared to impact male NAc. However, the patterns of gene expression in zebra finches were different than has previously been reported in mammals. Together, our results support the view that there are numerous mechanisms regulating social relationships and highlight the need to further our understanding of how social interactions shape social bonds.

The increasing demand for clean fuels and sustainable products has attracted much interest in the development of active and selective catalysts for CO conversion to desirable products. This review maps the theoretical progress of the different facets of most commercial catalysts, including Co, Fe, Ni, Rh, and Ru. All relevant elementary steps involving CO dissociation and hydrogenation and their dependence on surface structure, surface coverage, temperature, and pressure are considered. The dominant Fischer-Tropsch synthesis mechanism is also explored, including the sensitivity to the structure of H-assisted CO dissociation and direct CO dissociation. Low-coordinated step sites are shown to enhance catalytic activity and suppress methane formation. The hydrogen adsorption and CO dissociation mechanisms are highly dependent on the surface coverage, in which hydrogen adsorption increases, and the CO insertion mechanism becomes more favorable at high coverages. It is revealed that the chain-growth probability and product selectivity are affected by the type of catalyst and its structure as well as the applied temperature and pressure.

BACKGROUND: Dietary pattern involving meat consumption has an association with serum uric acid level which subsequently has an impact on moods. However, this relationship is not clearly established in pregnant women, particularly those who are accustomed to daily meat consumption. OBJECTIVE: This study investigated the relationship between red meat consumption and uric acid level and the subsequent impact on mood disorders in 1st trimester pregnant women. METHODOLOGY: A total of 92 pregnant women in their first trimester (8-12 weeks), were selected for this study. Socio-demographic characteristics including age, body mass index (BMI), educational qualification, sleep hours, blood pressure and exercise status were recorded. To assess meat consumption, classification based on the recruited population consumption was divided into low and high meat consumption groups. Serum uric acid level was estimated in plasma. Mood disorder, namely, depression and anxiety were assessed using a self-reported Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) questionnaire. Collected data was analysed using different statistical tools. RESULTS: Logistic regression analysis showed higher odds of depression (OR = 0.059, 95% CI 0.02-0.172, p < 0.001) and anxiety (OR = 0.144, 95% CI 0.055-0.375, p < 0.001) in the high meat consumption group. Further, the potential confounders, high BMI and less exercise increased the odds of depression and anxiety in high meat consumption groups. Linear regression analysis revealed a significant influence of meat consumption on uric acid level (F (1, 90) = 305.385, p < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: The study recommends regular clinical screening of mood disorders, and recommends reasonable consumption of lean meat and/or replacing some portions with fish, as well as, a commitment to eating a healthy, balanced diet. It also suggests extensive studies because it could be linked to postpartum mood disorders among those who consume red meat every day.

Purpose/Background: Patients and healthcare providers use online health information and social media (SM) platforms to seek medical information. As the incidence of cancer rises, the popularity of SM platforms has yielded widespread dissemination of incorrect or misleading information about it. In this study, we aimed to assess public knowledge about incorrect cancer information and how they perceive such information in Saudi Arabia. Methods: A nationwide survey was distributed in Saudi Arabia. The survey included questions on demographics, SM platform usage, and common misleading and incorrect cancer information. Results: The sample (N = 3509, mean age 28.7 years) consisted of 70% females and 92.6% Saudi nationals. Most participants had no chronic illness. One-third were college graduates and less than one-quarter were unemployed. Conclusions: Differences in level of knowledge about cancer emerged in association with different demographic factors. Public trust in health information on SM also led to being misinformed about cancer, independent from educational level and other factors. Efforts should be made to rapidly correct this misinformation.

Background One of the leading causes of cancer-related deaths in females under 45 years old is breast cancer (BC). The definition of triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC) is the lack of expression of estrogen receptors (ERs) as well as progesterone receptors (PRs) and Erb-B2 receptor tyrosine kinase 2 (HER2) gene amplification. Triple-positive breast cancer (TPBC), on the other hand, is defined as tumors expressing a high level of ER, PR, and HER2 receptors. This study aims to assess the phenotypes of TNBC and TPBC by comparing their individual clinical behavior patterns and prognosis throughout the course of the disease in a tertiary cancer center in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia (KSA). Methods Our study is a retrospective study using electronic medical records (EMRs) to identify all female patients diagnosed with BC using the International Classification of Diseases-10 (ICD-10) codes (between C50 and C50.9). About 1209 cases with primary BC female patients were recognized based on histopathology reports. Further subclassification into TPBC and TNBC was performed. Statistical analysis was performed using Rv3.6.2 (R Studio, version 3.5.2, Boston, MA, USA). The descriptive data were presented as means and standard deviations (SD). Survival curves were approximated using the Kaplan-Meier method. The comparison between survival curves between both groups was achieved using the log-rank test. The multivariate model was constructed based on the identified predictors using univariate analysis. Results Univariate analysis of overall survival (OS) showed that mortality was higher in TNBC compared to TPBC (HR = 2.82, P-value <0.05). However, in a multivariate analysis, molecular subtypes did not show a significant effect on OS with a P-value of 0.94. We found that age at diagnosis has been associated with a 4% increase in mortality risk with a yearly rise in age. Conclusion In this limited retrospective cohort study, we found that TNBC may not be associated with a higher risk of death than TPBC. However, other factors, including age at diagnosis, surgical intervention, and lymphovascular invasion (LVI), have been observed to increase the risk of mortality. On the other hand, patients with TNBC were found to have a worse prognosis in terms of local recurrence. This information cannot be generalized to all patients with BC given the limitations of this study. Further, larger cohorts are needed to explore biological and treatment-related outcomes in patients with TNBC and TPBC.

The influence of metal complexation of two polar ß-lactam antibiotics was investigated using surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy (SERS) technique. SERS method was applied to track the structural changes and the degradation behaviour of the studied compounds upon Zinc (II) ions-complexation. In situ laser-induced coral reefs-like photomicroclusters have been utilized as a SERS platform. The produced coral reefs-like photomicroclusters were characterized using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and transmission electron microscope (TEM). The antibacterial efficiency of the antibiotics was investigated and compared before and after metal complexation using two techniques; agar well diffusion and growth curve. To provide a detailed elucidation of the complexation reaction, mass fragmentation of metal- antibiotics complexes was investigated using liquid chromatography/mass spectrometric (LC/MS) technique. It was found that metal complexation of classical ß-lactam antibiotic (Ticarcillin) promoted the rate of its degradation, leading to a decrease of the antibacterial efficiency. On the other side, the antibacterial activity of the newly developed ß-lactam (Faropenem) has been greatly enhanced via metal-complexation reaction.

INTRODUCTION: Testicular cancer (TC) is a serious health issue, which requires early detection through testicular self-examination (TSE). OBJECTIVES: To investigate Saudi nursing students' health beliefs about TC and TSE using the Health Belief Model (HBM) scale and assess the validity and reliability of the HBM scale. METHODS: This cross-sectional study recruited a convenience sample of 374 nursing students from six nursing colleges in different cities in Saudi Arabia. Data were collected through self-report questionnaires that included demographic and academic information, as well as a valid and reliable HBM scale for TC and TSE. RESULTS: Most participants were single (88.8 %), in their third year of nursing education (43.9 %), had excellent or very good health (83.2%), had no family history of TC (88.9%), and had no medical problems with their testicles (92.8%). The participants had low susceptibility to TC and moderate beliefs about the seriousness of TC. Furthermore, participants reported moderate levels of perceived benefits and health motivation for preventing TC and practicing TSE, but high levels of perceived barriers and low levels of self-efficacy for practicing TSE. The internal reliability (Cronbach's alpha) of susceptibility, benefits and health motivation, seriousness, barriers, self-efficacy, and health motivation and promotion sub-scales was 0.91, 0.89, 0.88, 0.84, 0.67, and 0.65, respectively. Significant relationship between students' performing TSE and their health beliefs about Susceptibility (t=1.93, p=0.04) and Seriousness of having TC (t=2.88, p=0.03), and self-efficacy (t=3.91, p<0.001) and barriers (t=-2.51, p=0.04) to practice TSE. CONCLUSION: The study concluded that Saudi nursing students had moderate levels of health beliefs about TC and TSE, with high perceived barriers and low levels of self-efficacy for practicing TSE.

BACKGROUND: The interaction between healthcare professionals (HCPs) and family members during cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) in critical care units (CCUs) has received significant attention. In the Arabic region, family members are typically excluded from participating in critical care treatments, despite the cultural and religious significance of their presence. This highlights a lack of policies and research addressing the cultural factors related to family involvement in CPR within this context. OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to explore the nature of the relationship between HCPs and family member relations during CPR in Jordanian CCUs. METHODS: This study employed a qualitative research design. Data were collected through semi-structured interviews with 45 participants, including 31 HCPs and 14 family members of patients who had undergone CPR in Jordan. Data was managed, organized, and thematically analyzed using NVivo. RESULTS: The study revealed three main themes: Family-Witnessed Resuscitation (FWR) through the eyes of HCPs, FWR through the eyes of family members, and the relationship between HCPs and family members during CPR. The last theme has three subthemes: "Looking out for the Patient," "Looking out for Ourselves," and "Looking out for Each Other." These themes highlighted the complex and dynamic relationships between HCPs and family members during CPR in Jordan. Participants emphasized the importance of clear communication, mutual respect, and a collaborative approach to decision-making during CPR. CONCLUSION: The resultant study model uniquely explains the relationship between Jordanian health professionals and family members during CPR, with important implications for clinical practice and healthcare policies regarding family involvement during resuscitation in Jordan. Further research is needed to explore the cultural and societal factors influencing family involvement in resuscitation in Jordan and other Arab countries.
