Aquaculture, the fastest growing food production sector cannot continue to rely on finite stocks of marine fish as the primary source of the omega-3 (n-3) long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids (LC-PUFA), eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA; 20:5n3) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA; 22:6n-3), for feeds. A four-month feeding trial was conducted to investigate the impact of a de novo oil, with high levels of EPA and DHA, obtained from transgenic Camelina sativa on growth performance, tissue fatty acid profiles, and expression of lipid metabolism genes when used as a replacement for fish oil in feed for European seabass (Dicentrachus labrax). Triplicate groups of 50 juvenile fish (initial weight 16.7 ± 0.92 g) per tank were fed for 4 months with one of three isolipidic and isoproteic experimental diets consisting of a standard diet containing a commercial blend of fish oil and rapeseed oil (CFO), a diet containing transgenic Camelina oil (TCO), or a blend of fish oil and rapeseed oil with enhanced levels of EPA and DHA (EFO) formulated to match the n-3 LC-PUFA profile of the TCO feed. Final weight of fish fed the GM-derived oil was not different to fish fed either CFO or EFO. Slight lower growth performance of fish fed TCO at the beginning of the trial was related to transient reduced feed intake, possibly caused by glucosinolates in the raw Camelina sativa oil. The GM-derived oil improved the nutritional quality of the fish fillet by enhancing total n-3 PUFA levels compared to the fish fed the other two feeds, and maintained flesh EPA and DHA at the same levels as in fish fed the diets containing fish oil. The metabolic response in liver and intestine was generally relatively mild although diets TCO and EFO seemed to trigger a metabolic response consisting of an up-regulation of both ß-oxidation (cpt1a) and fatty acid transport (fabp1), possibly reflecting higher levels of LC-PUFA. Overall, the present study indicated that an oil of terrestrial origin, Camelina sativa, when engineered to contain high levels of EPA and DHA can replace fish oil in feeds for European seabass with no detrimental impact on growth or feed efficiency, while also maintaining or increasing tissue n-3 LC-PUFA contents.

La trombosis del seno lateral es una complicación potencialmente mortal de la otitis media aguda, aunque infrecuente en la actualidad debido al amplio uso de antibióticos. Sus manifestaciones clínicas son habitualmente fiebre, cefalea y otalgia, agregándose vómitos, edema de papila y compromiso del estado general. El examen diagnóstico de elección es la resonancia magnética en fase venosa y el manejo incluye terapia antibiótica endovenosa, miringotomía con instalación de tubo de ventilación y mastoidectomía, asociado o no a anticoagulación. Se reporta el caso de un escolar de 9 años derivado al Hospital Carlos Van Buren con un hidrocéfalo ótico secundario a una trombosis del seno lateral, manejado con terapia antibiótica endovenosa, mastoidectomía simple, miringotomía con instalación de tubos de ventilación y anticoagulación, evolucionando favorablemente con regresión de la sintomatología y recanalización del seno en el control imagenológico. Se realiza una revisión bibliográfica sobre la presentación clínica, diagnóstico y manejo de la trombosis del seno lateral en niños como complicación de la otitis media aguda.


Lateral sinus thrombosis (LST) is a potentially life threatening complication of acute otitis media. However, report rates have been decreasing since the spreaded use of antibiotic prescription. Patient developing LST usually complain about fever, headache and ear pain. Consequently, they may develop vomiting, papilledema and unhealthy-ness. Magnetic resonance venography (MRV) is considered the gold standard for LST diagnosis. Management procedures include parenteral antibiotics, myringotomy with tympanostomy tube and mastoidectomy, associated or not with anticoagulant therapy. The present study reports the case of a 9-year-old male referred to the Hospital Carlos Van Buren diagnosed with an otitic hydrocephalus secondary to lateral sinus thrombosis, managed with intravenous antibiotic therapy, simple mastoidectomy, myringotomy with tympanostomy tube placement and anticoagulation. Favorable clinical and imagenologic outcomes were obtained. We provide a brief summary about clinical features, diagnosis and management of the LST in children as a complication of acute otitis media.

The present study aimed to determine a non-invasive nocturnal lighting system for the behavioural observation of a highly light sensitive species, Senegalese sole (Solea senegalensis). Locomotor activity, four types of behaviour and plasma melatonin were analysed in groups of 12 adult Senegalese sole (Solea senegalensis) reared in captivity and held under four night illumination treatments: total darkness (control), high 50lux intensity red light (group RH), low 5lux intensity red light (group RL) and infrared light (group IR). All groups experienced the same conditions during the day (lights on from 07:00 to 19:00) with white lighting of 125lux. Clarity of video images taken at night for the observation of fish behaviour were ranked as follows: group RH>RL>IR>control. All treatments presented a daily rhythm in locomotor activity with high activity from 14:00 to 18:00 and low activity from 21:00 to 12:00. The sole exposed to the high intensity red light at night appeared to be disturbed as during the low nocturnal locomotor activity period group RH presented higher activity and significantly higher nocturnal behaviour related to escape or fear than was observed in the other groups. The groups control, RL and IR exhibited similar levels of nocturnal locomotor activity and nocturnal behaviour related to escape or fear. Plasma melatonin, at mid-dark was not significantly different between the control and groups RL and IR, while melatonin was significantly lower in group RH compared to the control. The authors recommended low intensity red night illumination for the non-invasive study of nocturnal behaviour of Senegalese sole adults.
