BACKGROUND: Mucosal thickening and mucosal antral cyst (MAC) in the maxillary sinus are incidental findings in panoramic radiographs. METHODS: The study sample consisted of 5021 participants in a nationally representative Health 2000 Health Examination Survey using panoramic radiography. RESULTS: The prevalence of mucosal thickening was 12% and of MACs 7%, both being twice as frequent in men as in women. Mucosal thickening was most common in the 40- to 49-year age group, whereas MACs were most often seen in younger age groups. Pathologic dental findings and root canal treatments were significantly associated with mucosal thickening but not with MACs. The odds ratios of vertical infrabony pockets were 5.2-fold compared with edentulous. CONCLUSION: This nationally representative study indicates that dental infections are etiologic for antral mucosal thickening, but not for MACs.

Несмотря на значительное улучшение ситуации, в европейских странах все еще часто наблюдаются случаи неблагоприятных последствий медицинских вмешательств и существуют неопровержимые свидетельства вреда, нанесенного пациентам. Основное внимание в рамках восьмого форума по вопросам будущего уделялось рассмотрению накопленного опыта и нерешенных проблем в области управления вопросами безопасности пациентов, стоящих перед участвующими в нем европейскими странами. Участники форума поставили перед собой задачу обменяться опытом в решении вопросов безопасности пациентов и извлечь из него полезные уроки, выявить пробелы в знаниях для изыскания путей улучшения управления вопросами безопасности пациентов, а также поддержать стремление международного сообщества к повышению уровня безопасности пациентов в Европейском регионе ВОЗ.

Despite substantial improvements, European countries still have a large incidence of adverse effects from health interventions and powerful evidence of harm to patients. The Eighth Futures Forum on governance of patient safety focused on experience and open questions related to the governance of patient safety in participating European countries. The aim was to exchange and learn from experience on governing patient safety, to identify the knowledge gaps on how to improve the governance of patient safety and to support the international drive towards increasing patient safety in the WHO European Region.
