RESUMO

In this study COVID-19 effects on different aspects of life that how this virus created a mess in every discipline of life starting from a small tuck shop of a street to a huge business with a chain between different countries; and some preventive measures are also suggested. Not only mental healthiness as well as physical health of people was also disturbed to a large extent. People being quarantined did not do any practice and had nothing to do, their boredom made them mentally and physically inactive. For minimization the effect of this pandemic on mental healthiness, interventions were practiced and psychological support systems were developed to help mentally effected people; on the other hand, to improve physical health the hospital workers worked day and night in return they got affected too either mentally or physically. Many of the youngsters started alcohol consumption during quarantine. Because of the closure of educational institutes, the students were sent back to their homes where there was no proper guidance for them and they lost their interests in studies; and in a sense educational impact of COVID-19 was also unbearable. Agricultural system was affected badly and the whole world passed through a huge economic loss. The flights and traffic were blocked throughout the world, and it is the only positive impact that COVID-19 led to the environment by improving water and air quality as there was a remarkable reduction in the emission of greenhouse gases.

RESUMO

Combinations of polymers can improve the functional properties of microspheres to achieve desired therapeutic goals. Hence, the present study aimed to formulate Prunus armeniaca gum (PAG) and sodium alginate microsphere for sustained drug release. Blended and coated microspheres were prepared using the ionotropic gelation technique. The effect of polymer concentration variation was studied on the structural and functional properties of formulated microspheres. FTIR, XRD, and thermal analysis were performed to characterize the microspheres. All the formulations were well-formed spherical beads having an average diameter from 579.23 ± 07.09 to 657.67 ± 08.74 µm. Microspheres entrapped drugs within the range 65.86 ± 0.26-83.74 ± 0.79%. The pH-dependent swelling index of coated formulations was higher than blended. FTIR spectra confirmed the presence of characteristic peaks of entrapped Tramadol hydrochloride showing no drug-polymer interaction. In vitro drug release profile showed sustained release following the Korsmeyer-Peppas kinetic model with an R2 value of 0.9803-0.9966. An acute toxicology study employing the oral route in Swiss albino mice showed no signs of toxicity. It can be inferred from these results that blending PAG with sodium alginate can enhance the stability of alginate microspheres and improve its drug release profile by prolonging the release time.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To assess the frequency of corneal dystrophies on the basis of histopathology in surgically-removed corneas. METHODS: The descriptive study was conducted at Foundation University Medical College, Islamabad, and Al Shifa Eye Hospital, Rawalpindi, Pakistan, from May to October 2011, and comprised post-keratoplasty corneal specimen irrespective of age and gender. The surgically-removed corneas were processed according to the standard guidelines of histopathological processing. The histopathological sections were examined for various corneal dystrophies. Data was recorded on a proforma and was analysed using SPSS 17. RESULTS: Of the 63 patients in the study, 12(19%) were diagnosed as having corneal dystrophies. In these 12 patients, 6(50%)were diagnosed as stromal corneal dystrophies and 5(42%)had posterior corneal dystrophies, and 1(8%)had anterior corneal dystrophy. CONCLUSIONS: Histopathological examination of corneas is a reliable method to diagnose and classify corneal dystrophies.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To determine interobserver reproducibility of thyroid cytopathology in cases of thyroid fine needle aspirates. METHODS: The retrospective, descriptive study, was conducted at the Foundation University Medical College, Islamabad, using cases related to period between 2009 and 2011. A total of 200 cases of fine-needle aspirations were retrieved from the archives. Three histopathologists independently categorised them into 6 groups according to Bethesda reporting system guidelines without looking at previous reports. Kappa statistics were used for analysis of the results on SPSS 17. RESULTS: Of the 200 patients, 194 (97%) were females and 6 (3%) were males. The overall mean age of patients was 46 +/- 20 years. Kappa value calculated for observer-1 and observer-2 was 0.735; for observer-1 and observer-3, 0.841; and for observer-2 and observer-3, 0.838, showing substantial interobserver agreement. Histopathological correlation was available, for 39 (19.5%). Of these cases, 5 (13%) were 'non-diagnostic, 20 (51%) 'benign, 2 (5%) 'atypia of undetermined significance/follicular lesion of undetermined significance, 6 (15%) 'follicular neoplasm, 1 (3%) 'suspicious for malignancy, and 5 (13%) 'malignant. CONCLUSIONS: Good overall interoberver agreement was found, but discordance was seen when certain categories were analysed separately.
