RESUMO

To attain a direct MIDI output from an electric guitar, we devised and implemented a sophisticated laser sensor system capable of measuring finger positions. This sensor operates on the principle of optical triangulation, employing six lasers and seven position-sensing detectors that are time-multiplexed. The speed and precision of this sensor system meet the necessary criteria for creating an electric guitar with a direct digital output, perfectly satisfying the application's requirements.

Optical rangefinders based on Self-Mixing Interferometry are widely described in literature, but not yet on the market as commercial instruments. The main reason is that it is relatively easy to propose new elaboration techniques and get results in controlled conditions, while it is very difficult to develop a reliable instrument. In this paper, we propose a laser distance sensor with improved reliability, realized through a wavelength modulation at a different frequency, able to decorrelate single measurement errors and obtain improvement by averages. A dedicated software is implemented to automatically calculate the modulation pre-emphasis, needed to linearize the wavelength modulation. Finally, data selection algorithms allow to overcome signal fading problems due to the speckle effect. A prototype demonstrates the approach with about 0.1 mm accuracy up to 2 m of distance at 200 measurements per second.

We demonstrate that the native configuration of a self-mixing interferometer attains a minimum detectable displacement of 0.72 nm or λ/1870 at the laser wavelength of 1310 nm, obtained by the bare laser diode package including a monitor photodiode, observed in the electrical domain by means of an oscilloscope and without any electronic processing of the signal.

A low-cost optical reflectivity sensor is proposed in this paper, able to detect the presence of objects or surface optical properties variations, at a distance of up to 20 m. A collimated laser beam is pulsed at 10 kHz, and a synchronous digital detector coherently measures the back-diffused light collected through a 1-inch biconvex lens. The sensor is a cost-effective solution for punctual measurement of the surface reflection at different distances. To enhance the interference immunity, an algorithm based on a double-side digital baseline restorer is proposed and implemented to accurately detect the amplitude of the reflected light. As results show, the sensor is robust against ambient light and shows a strong sensitivity on a wide reflection range. The capability of the proposed sensor was evaluated experimentally for object detection and recognition, in addition to dedicated measurement systems, like remote encoders or keyphasors, realized far from the object to be measured.

We propose a new detection scheme for self-mixing interferometry using two photodiodes for implementing a differential acquisition. The method is based on the phase opposition of the self-mixing signal measured between the two laser diode facet outputs. The subtraction of the two outputs implements a sort of balanced detection that improves the signal quality, and allows canceling of unwanted signals due to laser modulation and disturbances on laser supply and transimpedance amplifier. Experimental results demonstrate the benefits of differential acquisition in a system for both absolute distance and displacement-vibration measurement. This Letter provides guidance for the design of self-mixing interferometers using balanced detection.

RESUMO

The closed-loop technique has been demonstrated as a possible configuration to design a vibrometer based upon self-mixing interferometry. The electronic feedback loop allows a better linearity while extending the linearity range of a self-mixing interferometer. A deep analysis of the feedback loop is carried out in order to improve stability and performance through a digital approach. This work describes first the simulation of the closed-loop vibrometer, and then the performance obtained through its implementation on an FPGA based prototype.

RESUMO

This work describes the development of an optical sensor for measurement of vibration without contact. The realized vibrometer is based on real-time digital elaboration of the signal obtained by a self-mixing interferometer, with an embedded autofocus system. Two different algorithms are implemented, for the continuous working on diffusive surfaces, with different levels of optical reflectivity. Thanks to the autofocus and the digital processing, the proposed sensor is easy to use and requires no assistance of a skilled operator.

We propose an array of non-imaging micro-concentrators as a mean to recover the loss of sensitivity due to area fill-factor. This is particularly important for those image photo detectors in which complex circuit functions are required and a substantial fraction of the pixel area is consumed, like e.g., 3D camera, SPAD arrays, fluorescence analyzers, etc., but also in CMOS sensors. So far, the low fill-factor was an unacceptable loss of sensitivity precluding from the development of such devices, whereas by using a concentrator array a recovery is possible, up to the inverse square of numerical aperture of the objective lens. By ray tracing, we calculate the concentration factors of several geometries of non-imaging concentrator, i.e., truncated cone, parabolic and compound parabolic, both reflective and refractive. The feasibility of a sizeable recovery of fill-factor (up to 50) is demonstrated.

An instrument for noncontact measurement of differential vibrations is developed, based on the self-mixing interferometer. As no reference arm is available in the self-mixing configuration, the differential mode is obtained by electronic subtraction of signals from two (nominally equal) vibrometer channels, taking advantage that channels are servo stabilized and thus insensitive to speckle and other sources of amplitude fluctuation. We show that electronic subtraction is nearly as effective as field superposition. Common-mode suppression is 25-30 dB, the dynamic range (amplitude) is in excess of 100 microm, and the minimum measurable (differential) amplitude is 20 nm on a B = 10 kHz bandwidth. The instrument has been used to measure vibrations of two metal samples kept in contact, revealing the hysteresis cycle in the microslip and gross-slip regimes, which are of interest in the study of friction induced vibration damping of gas turbine blades for aircraft applications.

A novel telemetric system based on either differential pulse voltammetry (DPV) or direct current amperometry (DCA) by using a diffused infrared transmission channel is presented. Unlike similar pre-existing instruments based on infrared transmission, the present system works on a single-way communication, thus avoiding problems related to cross-talking between two-way channels. The infrared channel is also immune from electromagnetic interferences from the surrounding environment. Further advancement is the development of an original miniaturised system (dimension 1cm x 1.2 cm x 0.5 cm) with reduced weight (5-6 g), suitable for affixing to the rat head and allowing real time telemetric monitoring using DCA sampling of neurotransmitters such as dopamine or serotonin every 100 ms. The set-up is based on a transmitter (TX) circuit mounted on the animal's head and connected to the electrodes inserted into its brain. The TX circuit generates the proper electrical signals for DPV or DCA, collects the electrical response of the brain and transmits it, via an infrared channel, to a receiving station (RX) interfaced with a personal computer. The PC performs the sampling and elaboration of polarographic traces in a flexible and programmable way.
