RESUMO

Inferior turbinate lateralization via an endonasal approach is a reliable low-risk procedure to correct inferior turbinate hypertrophy resistant to medical treatment. This well-established technique provides nasal comfort while conserving the mucosal membrane and physiology of the inferior turbinate, minimizing the postoperative complications (empty nose syndrome) besetting turbinoplasty involving mucosal or submucosal reduction.

RESUMO

Carbon materials including carbon nanoparticles, such as nanographite, graphene and graphenic materials, and carbon nanotubes are known to be highly hydrophobic. Oxidation treatments are widely used as the best methods to improve their affinity in a liquid medium or a polymer matrix so that they can be dispersed, handled and processed. Here, we have applied eight different oxidation treatments in order to graft oxygen-containing functional groups at the surface of polyhedral graphitic particles synthesized by arc discharge from graphite, also called astralenes. The used functionalization approaches include both standard chemical attack by strong oxidants and radical functionalization of the sp2 network by direct C[double bond, length as m-dash]C bond opening. Commonly efficient functionalization methods were unsuccessful to functionalize astralenes while radicals generated from arylhydrazine could lead to functionalization of the outer surface of astralenes. The occurrence of functionalization could be shown by TGA coupled with MS and XPS. The reported method represents the first example of functionalization of astralenes. The efficiency of the applied functionalization methods is discussed considering the chemical reactivity of different carbon nanomaterials including graphene and carbon nanotubes.

RESUMO

The mango blossom gall midge, Procontarinia mangiferae, is a multivoltine species that induces galls in inflorescences and leaves of the mango tree, Mangifera indica. In subtropical Reunion Island, populations of P. mangiferae are observed all-year round, but the pattern and the role of dormancy in their life cycle have never been documented. We performed field and laboratory experiments using more than 15,000 larvae. We demonstrated that a larval diapause may affect a part of the midge population, regardless of the season. The total duration of the diapause varied from 6 weeks to more than 1 year. One year of field monitoring showed that the highest incidence of diapause was observed in larvae collected during the summer from mango leaves, where it affected approximately one-third of the individuals. This facultative diapause allows the permanent presence of P. mangiferae in the orchards. By recording diapause duration during 22 weeks under controlled conditions, we showed that high temperatures (26 °C) increased diapause duration and extended the range of the dates of diapause emergence, whereas cool temperatures (20 °C) shortened diapause duration and shortened the range of the dates of emergence from diapause. A temperature decrease from 26 to 20 °C triggered the emergence of diapausing individuals. These mechanisms ensure the synchronization of the emergence of diapausing individuals with the appearance of mango inflorescences, which is also induced by cool winter temperatures.

RESUMO

Leaf size-stem size allometric relationships are important features of biomass allocation in plants and are affected by biological functions linking the two organs. They have been studied at specific and supraspecific levels, but not at the infraspecific level. It was hypothesized that allometric relationships link leaf size and stem size at the cultivar level, and are cultivar-specific in relation to distinctive functional stem traits: hydraulic conductivity and mechanical strength. Allometric relationships between leaf size and stem size were established for 3 yr, using the standardized major axis method, on current-year branches, composed of one to 16 growth units, for four mango (Mangifera indica) cultivars characterized by contrasting growth habits. The hydraulic and mechanical stem properties of these cultivars were also measured. The slopes of the relationships were similar among cultivars, but not the y-intercepts. Different y-intercepts in the stem mass vs branch cross-sectional area relationship and in the leaf mass vs stem mass relationship were related to mechanical and to hydraulic stem properties, respectively. These results showed that leaf-stem allometry in mango cultivars was shaped by hydraulic and mechanical stem properties, supporting a functional interpretation of the relationship between leaf and stem dimensions.

RESUMO

Using a combination of top-down lithographic techniques, isolated, individual and oriented multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) were grown on nickel or iron nanoscaled dots. In the first step of the process, micron-sized catalytic metallic dots (either iron or nickel) were prepared using UV lithography. MWNTs were then synthesized from these catalysts using a direct current plasma-assistance and hot-filament-enhanced chemical vapor deposition (CVD) reactor. Samples were characterized by means of scanning electron microscopy. It turns out that the splitting up of the micron-sized dot is favored in the iron case and that the surface diffusion of the metal is enhanced using ammonia in the gaseous mixture during the CVD process. The results are discussed giving arguments for the understanding of the MWNT growth mechanism. In a second step, a focused ion beam (FIB) procedure is carried out in order to reduce the initial dot size down to submicronic scale and subsequently to grow one single MWNT per dot. It is found that nickel is most appropriate to control the size of the dot. Dots of size 200 nm +/- 40 nm are then required to grow individual MWNTs.

RESUMO

The American Thoracic Society/European Respiratory Society Task Force underlined that the use of in-line filters during respiratory function tests "is an area of controversy". The aim of the present study was to measure the contamination occurring during forced expiration downstream from a screen pneumotachograph (SP) with and without an in-line filter (Pall PF30S). A total of 40 healthy subjects performed eight consecutive maximal expiratory manoeuvres into four sterile apparatuses (A1: no filter, no SP; A2: filter-only; A3: SP-only; A4: filter and SP) in random order. A blood agar plate was fixed downstream from the apparatus. Colony-forming units (CFUs) were counted after 24 h incubation at 37 degrees C. Of the 40 plates obtained with each apparatus, 13 were sterile with A1 (range 0-679 CFUs), 25 with A2 (0-49 CFUs), 30 with A3 (0-35 CFUs) and 39 with A4 (one CFU in the only positive plate). A1 versus A2 and also A3 versus A4 gave different values for the CFU number, but A2 and A3 showed similar contamination levels. The authors conclude that: 1) the in-line filter does not perform better than a screen pneumotachograph; 2) it does not eliminate the need to decontaminate the pneumotachograph; and 3) equipment placed downstream from an in-line filter and a screen pneumotachograph is almost protected from contamination.

RESUMO

Functionalization of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) surface by sulfonated poly (ether ether ketone) SPEEK chains using a direct attachment reaction was investigated. A two step method was performed. MWNTs were oxidized by a nitric acid treatment to generate carboxyl groups on their surface. The grafting reaction of sulfonated groups of SPEEK with carboxyl groups present on the surface of oxidized MWNTs readily proceeds by using hexane diamine as an interlinking molecule. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) shows that tubes are wrapped by polymer chains. Near edge X-ray absorption fine structure spectroscopy (NEXAFS) at the C K-edge, O K-edge, and N K-edge and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) were used to give evidence of covalent functionalization of MWNTs by SPEEK macromolecules.

RESUMO

Combined spatially resolved electron-energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) and high resolution near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) spectroscopy have been used to investigate the nitrogen doping of multi-walled carbon nanotubes (N-MWNT). EELS indicates that most of the tubes are nitrogen-doped. NEXAFS spectroscopy reveals pyridine-like and nitrile N structures. High resolution NEXAFS experiments show that the main nitrogen concentration originates from a high amount of molecular N2 encapsulated into only a small quantity of tubes.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: Improvement of dentofacial appearance is often the main motives of patient seeking orthodontic treatment. However perception of aesthetic and orthodontic treatment need may be different among populations of different cultural background. The aim of the present study was to compare the perception of aesthetic and orthodontic treatment need between Caucasian (French) and African (Senegalese) MATERIALS AND METHOD: In the present study the perception of the attractiveness of 98 colours photographs of dentitions were assessed by 34 Caucasian and 31 African lay judges by mean of a Power Point presentation. Each slide were displayed for evaluation during 20 seconds RESULTS: The two populations share the same perception of orthodontic aesthetic with respect to some occlusal traits. However they diverge in their appreciation of 70% of the dentitions with midline diastemas. There were also significant differences in the perception of orthodontic treatment need with the Caucasian judges suggesting treatment more often than Africans. CONCLUSION: The results are discussed in term of accessibility in orthodontic treatment in association with socioeconomic status.

RESUMO

Carbon nanofibers are grown by direct current and hot filaments-activated catalytic chemical vapor deposition while varying the power of the hot filaments. Observations of these carbon nanofibers vertically oriented on a SiO2 (8 nm thick)/Si(100) substrate covered with Co nanoparticles (10-15 nm particle size) by Scanning Electron and Transmission Electron Microscopies show the presence of a graphitic "nest" either on the surface of the substrate or at the end of the specific nanofiber that does not encapsulate the catalytic particle. Strictly in our conditions, the activation by hot filaments is required to grow nanofibers with a C2H2 - H2 gas mixture, as large amounts of amorphous carbon cover the surface of the substrate without using hot filaments. From these observations as well as data of the literature, it is proposed that the nucleation of carbon nanofibers occurs through a complex process involving several steps: carbon concentration gradient starting from the catalytic carbon decomposition and diffusion from the surface of the catalytic nanoparticles exposed to the activated gas and promoted by energetic ionic species of the gas phase; subsequent graphitic condensation of a "nest" at the interface of the Co particle and substrate. The large concentration of highly reactive hydrogen radicals mainly provided by activation with hot filaments precludes further spreading out of this interfacial carbon nest over the entire surface of the substrate and thus selectively orientates the growth towards the condensation of graphene over facets that are perpendicular to the surface. Carbon nanofibers can then be grown within the well-known Vapor-Liquid-Solid process. Thus the effect of energetic ions and highly reactive neutrals like atomic hydrogen in the preferential etching of carbon on the edge of graphene shells and on the broadening of the carbon nanofiber is underlined.

RESUMO

The growth of multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) produced by a catalytic chemical vapor deposition (CCVD) process has been monitored using a tapered element oscillating microbalance (TEOM) probe. This technique displays a high sensitivity (<1 microg). Growths in the TEOM microreactor are investigated with catalytic particles (Fe, Ni) dispersed on different supports. First, high surface area FeAl2O3 or Fe (Ni) exchanged on zeolite powders is used. Second, growths are performed on array of nickel dots or FeSi-nc particles dispersed on large holes patterned on Si(100) substrates. An accurate monitoring of the early stages of growth permits a precise evaluation of the growth rates and shows substantial differences between these samples which greatly differ by the surface area. On catalysts dispersed on Si(100) the mass uptake is linear throughout the process. On high surface area catalysts, however, a saturation of the mass uptake is indifferently observed. This saturation is explained either by diffusion limitation by the growing MWCNTs or by internal diffusion through the pores or external diffusion through the grains of the catalyst. The kinetic dependence with partial pressure of the incoming C2H6:H2 gas mixture is then explored on the FeAl2O3 catalyst. A linear dependence of the MWCNT growth an (P(C2H6)/P(H2))(1/2) is found. A simple model is then developed that accounts for this dependence only if an associative and competitive adsorption of ethane is the rate determining step of the overall process. These results thus bring insight to improve and control the CCVD growth kinetics of MWCNTs.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: There is still lack of consensus regarding the most effective follow-up for stage I and II melanoma patients although some consensus conferences have provided guidelines stating that clinical examination should be the standard. OBJECTIVES: Our aim was to study the value of adding ultrasound lymph node examination (7.5 MHz) to the routine clinical examination recommended by French guidelines in melanoma follow-up. METHODS: A cohort of melanoma patients was enrolled between 1 July 1995 and 1 July 2000 in a follow-up protocol including clinical examination performed four times a year for thick melanomas (Breslow index > or = 1.5 mm) and twice a year for thin melanomas (Breslow index < 1.5 mm) according to French guidelines, and ultrasound lymph node examination performed every 6 months for thick melanomas and every year for thin melanomas. Follow-up was continued up to 1 July 2003. When clinical or ultrasound examination indicated signs of node recurrence, surgical biopsy of the involved node was performed. When ultrasound examination was only suspicious, another ultrasound examination was performed within the following 3 months. The results of both clinical and ultrasound examinations were compared with histopathology examination when node biopsy was performed. RESULTS: Ultrasound follow-up was performed for 373 patients (213 females and 160 males). Mean age at diagnosis of melanoma was 59 years (range 14-90, SD 15). In total, 1909 ultrasound examinations combined with clinical examination were analysed. Node biopsy was performed in 65 patients and demonstrated melanoma metastases in 54. Sensitivity of clinical examination and ultrasound examination was 71.4%[95% confidence interval (CI) 55.4-84.3] and 92.9 (95% CI 80.5-98.5), respectively, P = 0.02. Specificity of clinical examination and ultrasound examination was 99.6% (95% CI 99.2-99.8) and 97.8% (95% CI 97.0-98.4), respectively. Despite this apparent superiority of ultrasound examination over palpation, only 7.2% of the patients really benefited from ultrasound examination (earlier lymph node metastasis detection or avoidance of unnecessary surgery), while 5.9% had some deleterious effect from ultrasound examination (unnecessary stress caused by repetition of ultrasound examination for benign lymph nodes, useless removal of benign lymph node). CONCLUSIONS: This study confirms the greater sensitivity of ultrasound examination to clinical examination in the diagnosis of node metastases from cutaneous melanoma. However, the place of ultrasound in routine follow-up is at least questionable as only a very small proportion of patients (1.3%) really benefited from adding ultrasound examination to clinical examination.

RESUMO

Multiwalled carbon nanotubes are grown by microwave plasma chemical vapor deposition with CH4 and H2 as precursor gases. Ni and Ni/Pt electroplated layers are used as catalysts for the synthesis of the tubes. We observe that a very efficient filling of the tubes takes place with Ni. In some cases Ni/Pt filling is also observed inside the tubes. High-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) studies, coupled with energy-dispersive X-ray analyses of the tubes, indicate Ni nanorods with a highly symmetrical cylindrical structure. The diameter of the cylindrical nanorods is on the order of 40 nm, and their length is 660 nm. The nano area diffraction pattern of the nanorods reveals the cubic structure of nickel, and electron diffraction spots corresponding to (111), (200), (220) planes are evident. The lattice constant of Ni measured from the diffraction spots was found to be 0.347 +/- 0.0013 nm. This should be compared with 0.352 nm, the value of "a" in bulk Ni. The decrease in the lattice constant may be due to the strain experienced inside the tubes. Raman spectroscopy shows the typical signature of the tangential breathing mode present in the tubes at 1580 cm-1 that shifts to a new position when the C12 is replaced by 13C. The shift, however, is too small and is difficult to explain on the basis of mass difference. HRTEM experiments indicate the presence of Ni3C in the samples dominantly in the interfacial region.

RESUMO

The study of lattice distortions in structures with spherical or cylindrical geometry is of growing interest in the field of carbon nanoparticles (onions, nanotubes, etc.). We report an image analysis procedure entirely performed in reciprocal space which provides a global map of the inter-shell distances in carbon nanoparticles. This procedure is applied to carbon nanoparticles with a size of 100 nm that are generated under CVD conditions and exhibit positive as well as negative curvature of the basal lattice planes. These nanoparticles are subjected to intense electron irradiation under the beam of a high-voltage electron microscope with an acceleration voltage of 1.25 MeV. We observe a compression in their centre and a dilation of the outer shells. The reciprocal-space analysis of the high-resolution electron microscopy images opens the way to investigate the stability and equilibrium structure of carbon nanoparticles and to conclude on the formation mechanism.

RESUMO

A general stochastic model is presented that simulates the time course of flowering of individual trees and populations, integrating the synchronization of flowering both between and within trees. Making some hypotheses, a simplified expression of the model, called the 'shoot' model, is proposed, in which the synchronization of flowering both between and within trees is characterized by specific parameters. Two derived models, the 'tree' model and the 'population' model, are presented. They neglect the asynchrony of flowering, respectively, within trees, and between and within trees. Models were fitted and tested using data on flowering of Psidium cattleianum observed at study sites at elevations of 200, 520 and 890 m in Reunion Island. The 'shoot' model fitted the data best and reproduced the strong irregularities in flowering shown by empirical data. The asynchrony of flowering in P. cattleianum was more pronounced within than between trees. Simulations showed that various flowering patterns can be reproduced by the 'shoot' model. The use of different levels of organization of the general model is discussed.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: Relapsing polychondritis is a rare autoimmune disease, characterized by recurrent inflammation of cartilaginous tissues. In some cases, many other tissues can be involved. CASE REPORT: We describe the case of a 64 year-old man with relapsing polychondritis, whose first symptoms were papulonodular and mucosal aphthous lesions. The skin biopsy revealed vasculitis without leukocytoclasic features. The diagnostic of relapsing polychondritis was made only two years later, thanks to recurrent auricular chondritis. Since the beginning, the disease was associated with a myelodysplasia. DISCUSSION: Dermatological manifestations are noticed in less than 50 p. 100 of cases during the evolution of relapsing polychondritis. An association with a myelodysplasia has already been reported, and it could be a particular form of relapsing polychondritis. Myelodysplasic syndromes are more frequently associated with relapsing polychondritis than with other vasculitis. It must be sought especially when cutaneous and mucosal manifestations exist.

RESUMO

BACKGROUND: We describe two severe cases of polymorphic eruption of pregnancy associated with dyshidrosis and purpuric lesions. CASE-REPORT: Two patients, primigravida at 35 and 34 weeks of amenorrhea, were admitted in our department for a severe and itchy eruption. In the first case, some papular lesions were particularly concentrated on the abdominal striae, associated with vesicles on the limbs. There were plantar dyshidrosis and purpuric macules on the toes. In the second case, there were a maculopapular eruption on the abdomen and limbs, some vesicles and bullae of palms and soles, and a purpura of heels. In both cases, the skin biopsy showed dermic inflammatory, direct immunofluorescence and Pemphigoide Gestationis Factor research were negatives. The two patients were treated with betamethasone dipropionate (Diprosone(R)), and hydroxyzine (Atarax(R)). They gave birth to healthy babies. DISCUSSION: Dyshidrosis is not exceptional in polymorphic eruption of pregnancy. Indeed, in the several series of polymorphic eruption of pregnancy we checked, a pompholyx distribution was observed in 5 p. 100 of the cases. It is not necessary a sign of pemphigoid gestationis, even if this localization is commonly observed. The purpuric lesions are unusual because, according to our knowledge, there is no description of purpura associated with palmoplantar lesions in polymorphic eruption of pregnancy. The purpuric lesions may be secondary to high capillary permeability, increased by severe dermic inflammation of the polymorphic eruption of pregnancy and, possibly, high level of circulating estrogens.

RESUMO

Supercritical fluid extraction (SFE) followed by packed column supercritical fluid chromatography with ultraviolet detection was evaluated as a quantitative method for determining 4 antifungals (fluconazole, tioconazole, hexaconazole, and UK-47,265) in rodent diet. Chromatography was achieved with a cyano-bonded silica column, UV detection at 210 nm, and methanol-modified supercritical carbon dioxide as mobile phase. The effects of modifier concentration, temperature, and column pressure on antifungal retention time was studied. Off-line SFE was optimized at 2 spike levels, ranging from 0.5 to 10 g/kg, for each of the 4 antifungals. Average recoveries ranged from 79.0% for UK-47,265 to 96.5% for hexaconazole. Overall, the procedure provides a suitable method for analyzing antifungals in spiked rodent diet.

RESUMO

The appearance on the French market of a carbomer tear substitute, Gel-Larmes, an original galenic form, constitutes a real therapeutic progress in the treatment of dry eye syndrome. An open randomized multicentric trial was conducted comparing the tolerance and efficacy of Gel-Larmes with those of eye drops containing chondroitin sulphate. The statistical analysis evidences an inferior average number of daily instillations for Gel-Larmes, its better efficacy on the symptoms as well as on the objective criteria: biomicroscopic examination, break-up time, rose Bengal test. The tolerance of the product is excellent and 81% of the patients express their wish to pursue Gel-Larmes versus 54% for the reference product.

RESUMO

Metastases are the most frequent malignant tumors of the kidney, but these lesions are of late onset in neoplastic disease. The 19 cases reported here were all investigated with various imaging techniques (CT 12 cases, ultrasonography 12 cases, urography 8 cases, angiography 2 cases, MRI 1 case). The most common primary malignancies were lung cancer, melanoma and cancer of the contralateral kidney. In this series, 8 of the lesions were solitary, and 9 were unilateral. Tumor vascularity was evaluated in 15 cases: 14 of these lesions were hypovascular. The differential diagnosis includes small cysts, lymphoma, bilateral renal cancer, multiple small abscesses and multiple small infarcts.
