RESUMO

The first case of the novel coronavirus in Brazil was notified on February 26, 2020. After 21 days, the first case was reported in the second largest State of the Brazilian Amazon. The State of Pará presented difficulties in combating the pandemic, ranging from underreporting and a low number of tests to a large territorial distance between cities with installed hospital capacity. Due to these factors, mathematical data-driven short-term forecasting models can be a promising initiative to assist government officials in more agile and reliable actions. This study presents an approach based on artificial neural networks for the daily and cumulative forecasts of cases and deaths caused by COVID-19, and the forecast of demand for hospital beds. Six scenarios with different periods were used to identify the quality of the generated forecasting and the period in which they start to deteriorate. Results indicated that the computational model adapted capably to the training period and was able to make consistent short-term forecasts, especially for the cumulative variables and for demand hospital beds.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVES: The increased demand for esthetics and minimally invasive tooth restorations resulted in a rapid development of adhesive dentistry. However, much controversy remains about the safe use and cytotoxic effects of different groups of dental adhesives. The present study performed a systematic review to identify the answer to the following question: are self-etch adhesives more cytotoxic than those employing the etch-and-rinse system? METHODS: This systematic review was performed in accordance with the PRISMA statement; a quality assessment for in vitro studies was conducted using the ToxRTool. Specific search strategies were developed and performed in the electronic databases MEDLINE via PubMed, Cochrane Library, Scopus, Web of Science, and LILACS/BBO. After removal of duplicated studies and application of the exclusion criteria, ten eligible articles were selected and submitted to a qualitative descriptive analysis comparing both groups of dental adhesives. Most in vitro test systems employed pulp cells or gingival fibroblasts. RESULTS: The methodologies presented great variability regarding the exposure to the test materials. Only four studies assessed the role of the degree of conversion of the materials in their toxicity, with conflicting results. SIGNIFICANCE: While the lack of methodological standardization among the studies still hinders the establishment of a relationship between type of dental adhesive and toxicity, studies employing dentin barrier systems indicate greater cytotoxicity for etch-and-rinse adhesives.

RESUMO

Objective: To compare the bond strength of three-step and self-etch adhesive systems with and without prior acid etching on bonding of fiberglass posts in root canals. Material and Methods: Experiments were conducted on roots of five upper molars without curvature and sectioned in a cervical-apical direction. With the aid of a highspeed turbine and diamond tips, cylindrical cavities 7 mm in depth and 1.4 mm in diameter were made in the dentine. The roots of the same tooth were used, where the retainers were cemented, thus generating three groups: Group A: Adper Scotchbond Multipurpose Plus (SBMP) + Rely X ARC; Group B: Single Bond Universal (SBU-1) + Rely X ARC, with acid etching prior to adhesive insertion; Group C: Single Bond Universal (SBU-2) + Rely X ARC. The samples were stored in a bacteriological incubator at 37ºC with 100% humidity for 48h and were subsequently cross-sectioned to obtain 3 dentine discs 1mm in thickness. Forty-five specimens were subjected to the push-out test. Results: Through the analysis of variance and Tukey's test, it was found that SBMP showed, with statistical significance (p<0.05), highest bond strength when compared with the SBU-1 and SBU-2 systems. The observed difference in the discs was located in the cervical portion. Conclusion: The three-step adhesive system had higher bond strength with the substrate than the self-etching adhesive only in the disc in the cervical portion; further, statistically, the prior application of phosphoric acid in SBU-1 did not affect its bond strength significantly.

RESUMO

AIM: The aim of this study was to evaluate the inflammatory response to MTA Fillapex, AH Plus, and Pulp Canal Sealer Extensive Work Time (EWT), in a murine bone defect grafting model. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Bilateral mandibular critical defects were produced in 45 Wistar rats with a trephine bur#2 and filled with the endodontic sealers. After 7, 14, and 28 days, the rats were euthanized and their jaws were histologically prepared. RESULTS: For the 7-day group, no statistical significance was observed among all studied groups (p > 0.05), and high levels of inflammatory infiltrate were detected. After 14 and 28 days, Pulp Canal Sealer EWT showed statistically lower inflammatory response in comparison to other sealers (p < 0.05) except for the control group (no sealers). CONCLUSION: Pulp Canal Sealer EWT presented the lowest levels of inflammatory response. The critical defect grafting model was an effective method to detect differences among differences on the biological response to endodontic sealers. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Knowing the biocompatibility of endodontics sealers that will be used in filling the root canal.

RESUMO

INTRODUCTION: The aim of this in vitro study was to evaluate the effect of 10% citric acid and 17% ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid (EDTA) irrigating solutions on the surface morphology of young and old root dentin by determining the number and diameter of dentinal tubules using scanning electron microscopy (SEM). METHODS AND MATERIALS: Fifty healthy human teeth collected from young (≤30 years) and old (≥60 years) individuals (n=25) were first prepared with a Largo bur #2 to produce smear layer on the root canal surface. Subsequently, the crowns and the root middle and apical thirds were sectioned and removed, and the cervical thirds were sectioned vertically in the buccal-lingual direction into two equal halves. The obtained samples were then immersed in 2.5% sodium hypochlorite for 30 min and randomly separated into two treatment groups for each age group. In each age group, ten samples were selected as controls and did not receive any type of treatment. The rest of the specimens were then rinsed, dried and treated for 4 min with 10% citric acid or 17% EDTA. The samples were then assessed with SEM regarding the number and diameter of dentinal tubules. All data were assessed using Student's t-test. The level of significance was set at 0.05. RESULTS: Regardless of the type of treatment, no significant differences were observed in the number of open tubules between the young and old root dentin (P>0.05). Nonetheless, the diameter of the tubules in the old root dentin was larger when 17% EDTA was used (P<0.05). Both, young and old root dentin did not differ with the 10% citric acid treatment (P>0.05). CONCLUSION: The results showed that 17% EDTA treatment induced a significant demineralization in old root dentin.

RESUMO

A characterization of the physical-chemical composition of the atmospheric PM adsorbed to airborne pollen was performed. Airborne pollen was sampled using a Hirst-type volumetric spore sampler and observed using a Field Emission Electron Probe Microanalyser for PM analysis. A secondary electron image was taken of each pollen grain and EDS spectra were obtained for individually adsorbed particles. All images were analysed and the size parameters of the particles adsorbed to pollen was determined. The measured particles' equivalent diameter varied between 0.1 and 25.8 µm, mostly in the fine fraction. The dominant particulates identified were Si-rich, Organic-rich, SO-rich, Metals & Oxides and Cl-rich. Significant daily differences were observed in the physical-chemical characteristics of particles adsorbed to the airborne pollen wall. These differences were correlated with weather parameters and atmospheric PM concentration. Airborne pollen has the ability to adsorb fine particles that may enhance its allergenicity.

RESUMO

In a forensic investigation, the analysis of earth materials such as sediments and soils have been used as evidence at a court of law, relying on the study of properties such as color, particle size distribution and mineral identification, among others. In addition, the analysis of the organic composition of sediments and soils is of particular value, since these can be used as complementary independent evidence to the inorganic component. To investigate the usefulness of organic indicators in sediment characterization and discrimination, seventy-seven samples were collected during a period of one year in two river beaches located at the southern bank of the Douro River estuary in the North of Portugal. Isotopes of total carbon, pollen and plant wax-marker analyses were performed. In both beaches, an increase of the organic matter concentrations was noticeable, moving landward, related with the higher cover of associated plant material. The results obtained showed that the combination of all the techniques adopted showed a clear discrimination between samples from the two beaches, and also showed a differentiation of samples in relation to distance from the river in both beaches. The results also show that seasonality in these beaches was not a determining factor for discrimination, at the times considered. In addition, the effects of time was not marked.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: This study evaluated the compressive strength of first maxillary premolars from young and elderly people. BACKGROUND: Findings have revealed that changes happening on dental structure lead to a higher susceptibility of tooth fracture. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Thirty teeth were divided into four groups as follows: G I (n = 7) premolars of elderly patients with fused roots, G II (n = 8) premolars of elderly with separate roots, G III (n = 7) pre-molars of young people with fused roots and G IV (n = 8) premolars of young people with roots separated. The roots were placed in polyvinyl chloride (PVC) cylinder and embedded in acrylic resin. Afterward, the samples were subjected to fracture by compressive strength in a universal testing machine. Loads were applied in continuous and progressive speed of 0.5 mm/min until the moment of fracture. The values found underwent statistical analysis (ANOVA α = 0.05). RESULTS: With regard to age, there was a statistical difference, the teeth of the elderly being more susceptible to fracture (p < 0.05). With regard to root morphology, no significant differences between both groups were observed (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION: It was concluded that with the methodology employed, the age factor was important with regard to fracture resistance to compression.

RESUMO

The Algarve is located at a very short distance from North Africa, in Southern Portugal, and as one of the most touristic regions of Portugal, it is accessible by air, land and sea. It is very susceptible to many illegal activities, such as illegal migration, drug trafficking, kidnapping, and murder, among others. Therefore, an Algarve soils database for forensic purposes is being conducted with the conjunction of geological and palynological methodologies on soils characterization, since this is of fundamental importance to assess reliable evidence on forensic investigations. In this study, the properties of soils from several proximate sites from the Algarve were investigated, namely: (i) colour determined by spectrophotometry; (ii) particle size distribution determined by laser granulometry; (iii) low-field magnetic susceptibility by a susceptibility meter; and (iv) pollen content using a light microscope. Finally, a hierarchical cluster analysis was applied to ascertain the capacity of the different soil properties for discrimination between samples. The study reveals the utility of geobotanical techniques for forensic discrimination of soils. Even though some similarities between some of the samples were found, each one presented a combination of colour, particle size distribution, magnetic susceptibility and pollen features that enable the determination of a fingerprint expected to reveal a specific site for future selection of coastal search areas in the Algarve region.

RESUMO

Tunisia is one of the largest phosphate producers in the world (more than 10 million tons per year since the early nineties). The Kalaat Khasba mine (NW of Tunisia) has operated from 1893 until 1993 and data demonstrate that, in the phosphorites of Kalaat Khasba, Cd is enriched 105-208 times, when compared with shales, and U is enriched by a factor varying between 18 and 44. The general trend shows an increase in heavy elements content with decreasing particle size. On the other hand, concentrations of Sr, Cr and U exhibit the same distribution for the different size fractions. It was found that Cd concentrations exceed the allowed EC soil limits for growing crops. Hence, owing to the tailings exposure and to the mobilisation of the finest particles by rainfall and wind, Cd could have detrimental effects on human health and on the environment because a significant portion of Cd was found in the exchangeable form.

RESUMO

In this study, the colour of 23 sediment samples collected in different Portuguese beaches in the North (Entre-Douro and Minho) and 33 in the South (Algarve) was tested. Spectral colour parameters (L*a*b*) were measured after several presentation/pre-treatment methods: drying at 40 degrees C, sieving (<150 and <63 microm) and ashing at 850 degrees C, using a Konica Minolta CM-2600d spectrophotometer. A descriptive statistical analysis with L*a*b* values for each presentation/pre-treatment method was performed to ascertain within-sample reproducibility followed by a hierarchical cluster analysis to obtain significant discrimination between samples using colour analysis. The samples analysed presented a colour closest to red and yellow continuums and a lightness close to the pale side of the L*a*b* system colour sphere with samples collected in the North presenting analysis on average darker L values than the samples collected in the South. The cluster analysis, dried, unsieved bulk samples L*a*b* values gave the best discrimination between samples. The clusters analysis dried, unsieved bulk samples-dried, sieved <150 microm fraction set allowed better discrimination between samples compared with the dried, sieved <63 microm fraction set or dried, unsieved bulk samples-ashed bulk, unsieved samples set and even with dried, unsieved bulk samples/dried, sieved <150 microm fraction/dried, sieved <63 microm fraction/ashed bulk, unsieved samples considered all together.
