OBJECTIVE: To fabricate and characterize dental composites with calcium type pre-reacted glass-ionomer (PRG-Ca) fillers. METHODS: PRG-Ca fillers were prepared by the reaction of calcium fluoroaluminosilicate glass with polyacrylic acid. Seven dental composites were produced from the same organic matrix (70/30wt% Bis-GMA/TEGDMA), with partial replacement of barium borosilicate (BaBSi) fillers (60wt%) by PRG-Ca fillers (wt%): E0 (0) - control, E1 (10), E2 (20), E3 (30), E4 (40), E5 (50) and E6 (60). Enamel remineralization was evaluated in caries-like enamel lesions induced by S. mutans biofilm using micro-CT. The following properties were characterized: degree of conversion (DC%), roughness (Ra), Knoop hardness (KHN), flexural strength (FS), flexural modulus (FM), water sorption (Wsp), water solubility (Wsl), and translucency (TP). Data were analyzed to one-way ANOVA and Tukey's HSD test (α=0.05). RESULTS: All composites with PRG-Ca induced enamel remineralization. E0 and E1 presented similar and highest DC% than E2=E3=E4=E5=E6. Ra and KHN were not influenced by PRG-Ca fillers (p<0.05). The higher the content of PRG-Ca, the lower FS, FM and TP (p<0.05). Wsp increased linearly with the content of PRG-Ca fillers (p<0.05). E6 presented the highest Wsl (p<0.05), while the Wsl of the other composites were not different from each other (p>0.05). SIGNIFICANCE: Incorporation of 10-40wt.% of PRG-Ca fillers endowed remineralizing potential to dental composites without jeopardizing the overall behavior of their physicochemical properties. Dental composites with PRG-Ca fillers seems to be a good alternative for reinforcing the enamel against caries development.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the microshear bond strength (µSBS) to deep (DD) or superficial (SD) dentin (µSBS) overtime, nanoleakage (AG%), degree of conversion (DC%), water sorption (WSp), and solubility (WSl) of an adhesive system [Adper Single Bond 2(ASB)] containing matrix metalloproteinases (MMP) inhibitors [GM1489 (ASB-GM), Batimastat (ASB-BAT), or Chlorhexidine diacetate (ASB-CHX)]. ASB without inhibitor was used as control (CONTROL). MATERIALS AND METHODS: WSp and WSL were calculated based on ISO4049. DC% was analyzed using FT-IR spectroscopy. Dentin discs were used for µSBS evaluation. For AG%, resin-dentin beams were analyzed under scanning electronic microscopy. Data were analyzed using three-way ANOVA (AG% and µSBS) or ANOVA (DC%, WSp, WSl) and Tukey's HSD test. RESULTS: ASB-CHX presented the lowest DC%, lowest WSp, and highest WSl. ASB-GM reached the highest immediate µSBS in SD, only different from ASB-CHX. In DD, ASB-BAT and ASB-GM had the highest µSBS, statistically different from ASB-CHX. After twelve months, ASB-GM and ASB-BAT presented higher µSBS in SD when compared to CONTROL and ASB-CHX. In DD, ASB-GM reached the highest value, which was statistically different from CONTROL and ASB-CHX. CONTROL at both dentin depths and ASB-CHX at DD did not maintain bond stability. In SD after 12 months, ASB-BAT and ASB-GM decreased AG%. In DD, only ASB-GM reduced AG%. CONCLUSION: The ASB containing Batimastat and GM1489 maintained resin-dentin bond stability after 12 months for both dentin depths, without jeopardizing WSp, WSl, or DC% of the adhesive system. The ASB-GM presented greater µSBS after 12 months when compared with ASB. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: Batimastat and GM1489 could be suitable for inclusion as an MMP-inhibitor into Single Bond to improve the bond stability to superficial and deep dentin, without jeopardize the physic-mechanical proprieties.

PURPOSE: To investigate the effect of Ca(OH)2 concentration on pH neutralization, degree of conversion (DC%), and bonding performance of experimental self-etch adhesives (SEAs). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Four different concentrations of Ca(OH)2 (0 wt%, 1 wt%, 2 wt%, and 4 wt%) were added to the bond of an experimental two-step SEA consisting of primer (10-MDP [30 wt%], TEG-DMA [30 wt%], ethanol [35 wt%], water [5 wt%], camphorquinone [0.5 wt%], and tertiary amine [0.5 wt%]) and bond (bis-GMA [50 wt%], TEG-DMA [30 wt%], HEMA [20 wt%], camphorquinone [0.5 wt%], and tertiary amine [0.5 wt%]) to form four groups: E0, E1, E2 and E4. pH neutralization was evaluated until it reached equilibrium, and DC% within the hybrid layer was analyzed by micro-Raman spectroscopy. Human molars were wet ground until the occlusal dentin was exposed, SEAs were applied, and composite buildups were constructed. After storage in distilled water at 37°C for 24 h, the teeth were cut into composite-dentin beams. Microtensile bond strength (µTBS) was evaluated after 24 h of water storage at 37°C. Nanoleakage was evaluated by SEM. Data were analyzed using ANOVA and Tukey's HSD test (a = 0.05). RESULTS: All the SEAs reached pH equilibrium after thirteen days, with E1 and E4 presenting the highest pH (p < 0.05). E0 and E1 presented lower DC% than did E2 and E4 (p < 0.05). All the SEAs showed statistically similar mTBS and nanoleakage (p > 0.05). CONCLUSION: The incorporation of Ca(OH)2 endowed the SEAs with pH-neutralization ability and improved their DC%, without interfering with the bond strength to dentin or nanoleakage extent.

This study evaluated the effect of air-abrasion on t®m phase transformation, roughness, topography and the elemental composition of three Y-TZP (Yttria-stabilized tetragonal zirconia polycrystal) dental ceramics: two conventional (Lava Frame and IPS ZirCad) and one with high-translucency (Lava Plus). Plates obtained from sintered blocks of each ceramic were divided into four groups: AS (as-sintered); 30 (air-abrasion with 30 mm Si-coated Al2O3 particles); 50 (air-abrasion with 50 mm Al2O3 particles) and 150 (air-abrasion with 150 mm Al2O3 particles). After the treatments, the plates were submitted to X-ray diffractometry; 3-D profilometry and SEM/EDS. The AS surfaces were composed of Zr and t phases. All treatments produced t®m phase transformation in the ceramics. The diameter of air-abrasion particles influenced the roughness (150>50>30>AS) and the topography. SEM analysis showed that the three treatments produced groove-shaped microretentions on the ceramic surfaces, which increased with the diameter of air-abrasion particles. EDS showed a decrease in Zr content along with the emergence of O and Al elements after air-abrasion. Presence of Si was also detected on the plates air-abraded with 30 mm Si-coated Al2O3 particles. It was concluded that irrespective of the type and diameter of the particles, air-abrasion produced t®m phase transformation, increased the roughness and changed the elemental composition of the three Y-TZP dental ceramics. Lava Plus also behaved similarly to the conventional Y-TZP ceramics, indicating that this high translucency ceramic could be more suitable to build monolithic ceramic restorations in the aesthetic restorative dentistry field.

Resumo Este estudo avaliou o efeito da abrasão a ar na transformação de fase t®m, na rugosidade, topografia e composição elementar de três cerâmicas Y-TZP (Zircônia tetragonal policristalina estabilizada por ítrio): duas convencionais (Lava Frame e ZirCad) e uma de alta translucidez (Lava Plus). Placas obtidas de blocos sinterizados de cada cerâmica foram divididos em quatro grupos: AS (pré-sinterizado); 30 (jateamento com partículas de Al2O3 de 30 mm cobertas com Si); 50 (jateamento com partículas de Al2O3 de 50 mm) e 150 (jateamento com partículas de Al2O3 de 150 mm). Após os tratamentos, as placas foram submetidas à difratometria de Rx, perfilometria 3-D e microscopia eletrônica de varredura com espectroscopia de energia dispersiva de Rx (SEM/EDS). As superfícies pré-sinterizadas apresentaram predominantemente Zr e fase tetragonal. Todos os tratamentos superficiais produziram transformação t®m nas cerâmicas avaliadas. A topografia e a rugosidade foram influenciadas pelo diâmetro das partículas abrasivas (150>50>30>AS). A análise através de SEM mostrou que os três tratamentos produziram fendas retentivas nas superfícies das cerâmicas, por influência do tamanho das partículas. A análise através de EDS mostrou uma diminuição da concentração de Zr, paralela ao surgimento de O e Al, após o jateamento. No grupo tratado com partículas de Al2O3 de 30 mm cobertas com Si foi também observado um aumento de Si após o jateamento. Concluiu-se que, independente do tipo e do diâmetro das partículas, o jateamento produziu transformação t®m, aumentou a rugosidade e alterou a composição elementar das cerâmicas avaliadas. A Lava Plus apresentou comportamento semelhante às cerâmicas convencionais, indicando que esta cerâmica de alta translucidez pode ser mais adequada à confecção de restaurações monolíticas no campo da odontologia estética restauradora.

PURPOSE: To investigate the influence of 4-META concentration and type of solvent on the degree of conversion (DC%) and resin-dentin bond stability of experimental etch-and-rinse adhesives. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Four different concentrations of 4-META (12 wt%, 20 wt%, 30 wt%, 40 wt%) were added to a model adhesive system consisting of TEG-DMA (25 wt%), UDMA (20 wt%), HEMA (30 wt%), water (4 wt%), camphorquinone (0.5 wt%), and tertiary amine (0.5 wt%) dissolved in 20% acetone (A12, A20, A30 and A40) or 20% ethanol (E12, E20, E30 and E40). DC% was evaluated by FT-IR spectroscopy. Human molars were wet ground until the occlusal dentin was exposed, the adhesive systems were applied after 37% phosphoric acid etching, and resin composite buildups were incrementally constructed. After storage in distilled water at 37°C for 24 h, the teeth were cut into resin-dentin beams (cross-sectional area 1 mm2). Microtensile bond strength (µTBS) was evaluated after 24 h, 6 months, and 1 year of water storage at 37°C. The failure mode was categorized as adhesive, mixed, or cohesive. Data were analyzed using ANOVA and Tukey's HSD test (α = 0.05). RESULTS: A12 presented the lowest DC% (p < 0.05). All the other adhesive systems showed statistically similar DC% (p > 0.05). All adhesive systems maintained resin-dentin bond stability after 6 months of water storage, while only A40 and E40 maintained it after 1 year. CONCLUSION: Irrespective of the type of organic solvent, the incorporation of high concentrations of 4-META (40 wt%) improved the resin-dentin bond stability of the experimental etch-and-rinse adhesive systems over a period of 1 year.

This study evaluated the potential of a tri-functional monomer (trimethylolpropane trimethacrylate -TMPTMA) for inclusion in a dental composite organic matrix. Initially, four ternary matrixes with different concentrations (wt%) of bi-functional monomers [BisGMA (G), Bis-EMA (E) and TEGDMA (T)] were analyzed: GET523, GET532, EGT523 and EGT532 (the numbers (n) represent n×10 wt% of each monomer). The following properties were evaluated: degree of conversion, flexural strength, elastic modulus, hardness, absorption, solubility, diffusion coefficient of water and crosslink density. Based on the best overall results obtained for EGT532, all properties were re-evaluated in a matrix where TEGDMA (T) was replaced by a tri-functional monomer, TMPTMA (A)-EGA532. EGA532 presented the best results for flexural strength, hardness, absorption and crosslink density. EGT523, EGT532 and EGA532 presented the lowest diffusion coefficients of water. The overall results indicated that TMPTMA could be useful in formulating organic matrixes suitable for dental restorative composites.

RESUMO

O clareamento dental como tratamento estético em Odontologia tem sido amplamente empregado nos últimos anos e, visando o melhoramento deste, técnicas e produtos passaram por modificações. Todavia, ainda são encontrados alguns problemas que devem ser contornados. A sensibilidade pós-clareamento afeta mais da metade dos pacientes em diferentes graus. O presente estudo objetiva revisar os principais métodos empregados atualmente para reduzir essa incidência e/ou intensidade, podendo ser utilizados alguns protocolos nas fases pré, trans e pós-operatórias. Entre eles, destacam-se a escolha da técnica e da concentração do gel, uso de dessensibilizantes, aplicação tópica de flúor e administração de analgésicos e anti-inflamatórios.


Tooth bleaching procedures have been largely used. Techniques and products were improved along the years. However, some problems are still present and must be surpassed. Dentin hypersensitivity after tooth bleaching affects over fifty percent of pacients, in different levels. The present study aimed to review the current literature on the methods available to prevent and reduce the incidence and the intensity of hypersensitivity, using clinical protocols before, during and after the bleaching procedure. Among them, we highlight the choice of the technique and gel concentration, use of desensitizing agents and fluoride application, and administration of analgesics and anti-inflammatory.

PURPOSE: This study evaluated the sorption and solubility of self-etching adhesive systems after immersion in distilled water, lactic acid, and propionic acid. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Specimens of 2 two-step (P90 System Adhesive [P90], Clearfil SE Bond [CSE]) and 1 single-step (Adper Easy One [AEO]) adhesive systems were prepared and divided into 4 groups: P90 primer ( P90-P), P90 bond (P90-B), AEO, and CSE bond (CSE-B). Specimens were placed in a desiccator and weighed daily until achieving a constant mass (m1). The specimens (n = 5) were then immersed in the respective media and weighed until a achieving a constant mass (m2). The specimens were again desiccated (m3). Sorption and solubility data were analyzed with two-way ANOVA and Turkey's test. Specimens were also observed using SEM without immersion, after 24 h, and at the end of the respective total time of immersion. RESULTS: For all immersion media, the highest sorption values were obtained for AEO and P90-P, followed by CSE-B and P90-B, which presented the lowest sorption. The time required for adhesives to absorb the solutions was: 11 to 19 days for P90-P, 12 to 13 days for P90-B, 15 to 19 days for AEO, and 14 to 18 days for CSE-B. The highest values of solubility were shown for AEO and P90-P in all immersion media. In water and propionic acid, the adhesives with the lowest solubility values were CSE-B and P90-B. CSE-B had the lowest solubility in lactic acid. CONCLUSION: The greatest surface degradation was observed after each respective total time of immersion. AEO specimens presented more evident surface degradation and the highest sorption and solubility.

UNLABELLED: Indirect restorations in contact with free gingival margins or principally within the gingival sulcus, where the presence of organic acids produced by oral biofilm is higher, may present faster degradation of the resin-based cement pellicle. OBJECTIVES: To investigate the degradation of four resin-based cements: Rely X ARC (R), Variolink II (V), Enforce (E) and All Cem (A), after immersion in distilled water (DW), lactic acid (LA) and artificial saliva (AS) and to analyze the influence of the activation mode on this response. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Two activation modes were evaluated: chemical (Ch) and dual (D). In the dual activation, a two-millimeter thick ceramic disk (IPS Empress System) was interposed between the specimen and light-curing unit tip. Specimens were desiccated, immersed in distilled water, artificial saliva and lactic acid 0.1 M at 37°C for 180 days, weighed daily for the first 7 days, and after 14, 21, 28, 90 and 180 days and were desiccated again. Sorption and solubility (µg/mm 3 ) were calculated based on ISO 4049. The data were submitted to multifactor analysis of variance (MANOVA) and Tukey's HSD test for media comparisons (α=0.05). RESULTS: Sorption was higher after immersion in LA (p<0.05) and increased significantly with time (p<0.05). Sorption was influenced by the activation mode: Ch>D (p<0.05). The lowest solubility was presented by R (p<0.05). CONCLUSIONS: Lactic acid increased the degradation of resin-based cements. Moreover, the physical component of activation, i.e., light-activation, contributed to a low degradation of resin-based cements.

OBJECTIVE: This study analyzed the degree of conversion (DC%) of four resin-based cements (All Ceram, Enforce, Rely X ARC and Variolink II) activated by two modes (chemical and dual), and evaluated the decrease of DC% in the dual mode promoted by the interposition of a 2.0-mm-thick IPS Empress 2 disc. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In the chemical activation, the resin-based cements were prepared by mixing equal amounts of base and catalyst pastes. In the dual activation, after mixing, the cements were light-activated at 650 mW/cm² for 40 s. In a third group, the cements were light-activated through a 2.0-mm-thick IPS Empress 2 disc. The DC% was evaluated in a FT-IR spectrometer equipped with an attenuated total reflectance crystal (ATR). The data were analyzed by two-way ANOVA and Tukey's HSD test. RESULTS: For all resin-based cements, the DC% was significantly higher with dual activation, followed by dual activation through IPS Empress 2, and chemical activation (p<0.05). Irrespective of the activation mode, Rely X presented the highest DC% (p<0.05). Chemically activated Variolink and All Ceram showed the worst results (p<0.05). The DC% decreased significantly when activation was performed through a 2.0-mm-thick IPS Empress 2 disc (p<0.05). CONCLUSION: The results of the present study suggest that resin-based cements could present low DC% when the materials are dually activated through 2.0 mm of reinforced ceramic materials with translucency equal to or less than that of IPS-Empress 2.

OBJECTIVE: This study analyzed the degree of conversion (DC percent) of four resin-based cements (All Ceram, Enforce, Rely X ARC and Variolink II) activated by two modes (chemical and dual), and evaluated the decrease of DC percent in the dual mode promoted by the interposition of a 2.0-mm-thick IPS Empress 2 disc. MATERIAL AND METHODS: In the chemical activation, the resin-based cements were prepared by mixing equal amounts of base and catalyst pastes. In the dual activation, after mixing, the cements were light-activated at 650 mW/cm² for 40 s. In a third group, the cements were light-activated through a 2.0-mm-thick IPS Empress 2 disc. The DC percent was evaluated in a FT-IR spectrometer equipped with an attenuated total reflectance crystal (ATR). The data were analyzed by two-way ANOVA and Tukey's HSD test.
