RESUMO

Toxoplasma gondii is one of the most common foodborne protozoan parasite causing congenital infection, abortion, and stillbirth in humans and animals. The temperate and humid climate is one of the most important factors in the high prevalence of T. gondii. Sheep are among the important sources of meat production in Guilan province, Iran. Therefore, the consumption of raw and half-cooked meat is one of the major risk factors for T. gondii infection. Toxoplasmosis in patients with intact immune systems is usually asymptomatic; however, it but can be life-threatening in patients with a weak immune system (for example, patients with the human immunodeficiency viruses/acquired immunodeficiency syndrome or cancer and transplant recipients). Guilan is divided into three geographical regions of plains with a temperate climatic condition, hillsides with a semi-humid climate, and heights with cold mountainous climate. Climate situations play a role in the prevalence of toxoplasmosis. The present study aimed to investigate the seroprevalence of T. gondii infection among sheep in Guilan province, north of Iran. In the current cross-sectional study, a total of 400 sheep sera samples were tested for the determination of immunoglobulin G (IgG) antibody against T. gondii using the enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The samples were divided into different groups according to the geographical location and animal age. T. gondii antibody (i.e., IgG) was detected in 166 sheep (41.5%). The highest frequency of T. gondii infection (72.7%; n=56) was observed for the age group of > 4 years; the difference was statistically significant in this regard (P=0.0001) in comparison to that reported for other groups. In addition, the seroprevalence of T. gondii was significantly higher in the plains (53.9%) than that of the hillsides and heights (P=0.0001). Consequently, the seroprevalence of T. gondii infection in Guilan was high indicating a significant relationship with geographical location and animal age.

RESUMO

The genus Anaplasma is an obligated intracellular Rickettsia and among its species, Anaplasma phagocytophilum (A. phagocytophilum) is a zoonotic agent that infects host neutrophils. The aim of this study was molecular detection of A. phagocytophilum infection based on MSP4 gene in owned and stray dogs in Tehran, capital of Iran. One hundred and fifty blood samples were collected from dogs in Tehran and suburbs of Tehran, Iran. Firstly, the thin blood smears were prepared and Giemsa staining method was conducted. Then, the samples were examined under oil immersion objective and 0.67% of them were observed infected with A. phagocytophilum. The DNA was extracted from blood samples using a DNA isolation kit (MBST, Iran), and MSP4 gene extraction was performed by Polymerase chain reaction (PCR) and nested-PCR. Finally, 2% of the samples were positive for A. phagocytophilum. The data were analyzed using SPSS software (version 19.0) and Chi-square test was performed. There was no significant relation between infection and age, as well as sex and ectoparasitic infestation (P>0.05). This article was a report of A. phagocytophilum infection in dogs and their potentials as host carriers of this important microorganism in Tehran, Iran.

RESUMO

This paper reports tests on a lab-scale surface aeration vessel was equipped with a Rushton turbine to examine its performance in terms of standard aeration efficiency (SAE), mixing time, and void fraction characteristics. These characteristics were investigated by tests using variations of rotor speed, impeller immersion depth, and water level. Results showed that variation of impeller immersion depth had a greater effect on the SAE compared to variation of water level. Moreover, the SAE increased with rotor speeds up to about 150 to 200 rpm and then decreased. In addition, void fraction improved by impeller immersion depth and rotor speed enhancement; however, mixing time and power number were reduced as rotor speed increased. According to the response surface methodology statistical optimizations, optimum values for rotor speed, impeller immersion depth, and water level were 168.90 rpm, 25 mm, and 30 cm, respectively, to achieve the maximum value of SAE.

RESUMO

Volatile fatty acids (VFAs) are key intermediates in anaerobic digestion. Enriched acetogenic and methanogenic cultures were used for the syntrophic anaerobic digestion of VFAs in a continuous fixed-bed reactor at mesophilic conditions. The interactive effects of propionic (HPr), butyric (HBu), and acetic (HAc) acids were analyzed. Furthermore, hydraulic retention time (HRT) and methanogen-to-acetogen ratios (M/As) were investigated as the key microbiological and operating variables of VFA anaerobic degradations. Experiments were carried out based on central composite design (CCD) and results were analyzed using response surface methodology (RSM). Effluent concentrations of HPr, HBu, HAc, and biogas production rate (BPR) were directly measured as responses. The optimum conditions were found to be HPr = 1122.9 mg/L, HBu = 1792.4 mg/L, HAc = 1735.4 mg/L, HRT = 21 hours, and M/A = 2.4 (corresponding to the maximum VFA removal and BPR). The results of verification experiments and predicted values from fitted correlations were in close agreement at a 95% confidence interval.

RESUMO

In the first, Cadmium selenide Nanoparticle loaded on activated carbon (CdSe-NP-AC) has been synthesized and characterized by different techniques including XRD and SEM. Then, this new adsorbent successfully has been applied for the removal of muroxide (MO) from aqueous solution in batch studies, while the effect of various experimental parameters like initial pH (pH(0)), contact time, amount of (CdSe-NP-AC) and initial MO concentration (C(0)) on its removal percentage was examined by one at a time optimization method. It was found following optimization of variable, the adsorption of MO onto (CdSe-NP-AC) followed pseudo-second-order kinetics and show Tempkin and Langmuir models for interpretation of experimental data. It was observed that by increasing the temperature the removal percentage was improved and the positive change in entropy (ΔS°) and heat of adsorption (ΔH°) show the endothermic nature of process, while the high negative value in Gibbs free energy change (ΔG°) indicates the feasible nature of adsorption process.

RESUMO

Volatile fatty acids (VFAs) are key intermediates in anaerobic digestion. Enriched acetogenic and methanogenic cultures were used for syntrophic anaerobic digestion of VFAs in a high-load continuous reactor fed with acetic (HAc), propionic (HPr) and butyric (HBu) acids at maximum concentrations of 5, 3 and 4 g/L, respectively. Interactive effects of HPr, HBu and HAc were analyzed. Furthermore, hydraulic retention time (HRT) and methanogen to acetogen population ratio (M/A) were investigated as key microbiological and operating variables of VFA anaerobic degradations. Optimum conditions were found to be HPr=1125.0mg/L, HBu=1833.4 mg/L, HAc=1727.4 mg/L, HRT=21 h and M/A=2.5 (corresponding to maximum VFA removal and biogas production rate (BPR)). Results of verification experiments and predicted values from fitted correlations were in close agreement at 95% confidence interval. HRT and M/A had positive effects on VFA removal and BPR. M/A was the most important factor that affected BPR. All VFAs inhibited VFA removals.

RESUMO

Healthcare-associated infection (HCAI) following open heart surgery is not only a major cause of mortality and morbidity, but also carries higher costs. There are limited data on the additional costs due to HCAI in non-western countries. To estimate the direct cost of the four most common HCAIs in an Iranian sample, we studied 1191 patients admitted for elective open heart surgery. HCAIs were defined using the National Nosocomial Infections Surveillance criteria (Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Atlanta, GA, USA). The financial costs of length of stay per day in hospital, paraclinical services, medications, instruments, and operating room were provided by the hospital's finance department. The contribution of HCAI to excess direct medical costs in patients with HCAI was assessed by multivariable linear regression. In the study population, the mean age was 57.3±11.9 years, 857 (72.0%) were men, and 64 (5.4%) developed HCAI. In total there were 73 infections of which the most common was surgical site infection (49.3%), followed by urinary tract infection (20.5%), bloodstream infection (16.5%), and pneumonia (13.7%). After adjustment for other confounders HCAI remained associated with excess direct medical costs (ß=1707.06, SE=90.84; P < 0.001). The medical costs in patients with HCAI were almost twice those in patients without HCAI. More than half of the excess cost was attributable to prolonged hospitalisation.

RESUMO

OBJECTIVE: To examine the role of vascular invasion as a prognostic factor in melanoma. DESIGN: Retrospective survival analysis. SETTING: Academic medical center. PATIENTS: A total of 526 patients with primary cutaneous melanoma from the University of California, San Francisco, Melanoma Center database with 2 years of follow-up or documented relapse. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: (1) Presence of vascular involvement defined as vascular invasion with tumor cells within blood or lymphatic vessels; or uncertain vascular invasion, with melanoma cells immediately adjacent to the endothelium. (2) Percentage with metastasis or death and relapse-free and overall survival. RESULTS: The presence of either type of vascular involvement significantly increased the risk of relapse and death and reduced the survival associated with melanoma. The impact of vascular involvement on these outcomes was similar to that of ulceration. In a multivariate analysis, vascular involvement was the second most important factor (after tumor thickness) in the primary tumor in predicting survival. CONCLUSIONS: Vascular involvement is an important independent predictor of metastasis and survival in melanoma. The phenomenon of uncertain vascular invasion describes an earlier step than definite vascular invasion in tumor progression.
