RESUMO

A young cat with signs of chronic rhinitis was evaluated for underlying anatomical, inflammatory, or infectious disease. Initial diagnostics were significant for the isolation of an unusual pathogen, Haemophilus species. Isolation using a human RapID NH system erroneously identified the isolate as H. segnis, a human pathogen. No database of veterinary pathogens (Haemophilus) are included in the system and animal pathogens will either be erroneously identified or yield a unique biocode not listed. Because of the unique nature of the pathogen we explored the possibility of immunosuppression as a contributory factor to infection. A variety of laboratory tests were employed to evaluate immune function. The clinical indications and utility of immune function testing are discussed. No immune dysfunction was identified.

RESUMO

In an effort to understand the perceived correlation of internal mammary artery harvesting and wound healing difficulties in the inferior margins of the sternotomy incision, we showed the cutaneous vascular perfusion in the sternal and xiphoid areas by India ink injection studies in cadavers. With these studies, we demonstrated an inherent paucity of nutrient supply to the inferior sternum and xiphoid area. The classic internal mammary artery harvest further compromises the blood supply to these areas. We believe that limiting the most inferior dissection of the internal mammary artery and not including the distal bifurcation leaves intact the lateral musculophrenic nutrient supply to the inferior sternum and xiphoid area and to the ipsilateral abdominal rectus muscle. These guidelines will help to prevent ischemic complications of this area and may aid in reconstruction. If the bifurcation is harvested, we believe that the removal of the avascular xiphoid cartilage at the time of the initial bypass procedure may eliminate this as a potential septic focus.

RESUMO

When mature Protosiphon cells were placed in darkness, zoospore production was more extensive and was completed in a shorter time at a temperature of 27 C than at 22 or 15 C. Cool-white fluorescent (Sylvania) light inhibited the process measurably at a radiation intensity of 0.6±10(3) ergsjcm(2) -sec; inhibition was 96% complete at 14±10(3) ergs/cm(2) -sec. For mature cells previously grown under repeated 12-12 hr light-dark cycles, a dark period of approximately 2 hr at 22 C allowed cell division to proceed to a stage such that reillumination did not inhibit continued development of zoospores. Monochromatic light from 402 to approximately -494 nm, as compared to darkness, inhibited zoospore formation; maximal inhibition was at 432-461 nm. In contrast, monochromatic light from 522 to 726 nm stimulated zoospore formation relative to darkness. Synchronous zoospore production was obtained using the following regimes: (A) 12 hr cool-white alternated with 12 hr yellow, (B) 12 hr cool-white alternated with 12 hr blue. Under regime A synchronous zoospore release (following synchronous production) occurred near the end of the yellow irradiation period, while under regime B it occurred near the end of the cool-white irradiation period. The significance of this in terms of photoprocesses and possible photoreceptors is discussed.
