RESUMO

INTRODUCTION AND AIMS: Epstein-Barr virus (EBV) infection is an etiologic factor in EBV-associated gastric carcinoma (EBVaGC). The aim of our study was to describe the clinical and histopathologic characteristics of EBV infection in intestinal-type gastric adenocarcinoma samples. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Of 180 paraffin-embedded gastrectomy samples, 28 were studied. Chromogenic in situ hybridization was performed to detect EBV. Sociodemographic and histopathologic data were obtained from the patients' clinical histories. RESULTS: A total of 21.4% of the samples were positive for EBV. The predominant morphologic characteristic was the lace pattern, with dense inflammatory infiltration. Fifty percent of the EBVaGC+ patients were men, and the median age of the positive patients was 59 years (range: 50-75); 77.2% of the EBVaGC- patients were men, and the median age of the negative patients was 66 years (range: 34-89). Helicobacter pylori infection was associated with 10.7% of the EBVaGC+ patients and 53.6% of the EBVaGC- patients. In the EBVaGC+ patients, the cardia was the most frequent tumor location (17.9%), 7.1% had histologic grades 2 and 3, and 17.9% presented with Borrmann classification type III. In the EBVaGC- patients, the cardia and fundus were the most frequent tumor locations (71.4%), 35.7% had histologic grade 2, and 39.3% and 21.4% presented with Borrmann classification type III and IV, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The present study describes the clinical and histopathologic characteristics associated with EBVaGC positivity. Those data may aid in the selection of cases that are candidates for analysis through molecular methods aimed at identifying EBV infection in intestinal-type gastric adenocarcinoma.

RESUMO

Incremental prediction of aggression from callous-unemotional (CU) traits is well established, but cross-cultural replication and studies of young children are needed. Little is understood about the contribution of CU traits in children who are already aggressive. We addressed these issues in prospective studies in the United Kingdom and Colombia. In a UK epidemiological cohort, CU traits and aggression were assessed at age 3.5 years, and aggression at 5.0 years by mothers (N = 687) and partners (N = 397). In a Colombian general population sample, CU traits were assessed at age 3.5 years and aggression at 3.5 and 5.0 years by mother report (N = 220). Analyses consistently showed prediction of age-5.0 aggression by age-3.5 CU traits controlling for age-3.5 aggression. Associations between age-3.5 CU traits and age-5.0 aggression were moderated by aggression at 3.5 years, with UK interaction terms, same informant, ß = .07 p = .014 cross-informant, ß = .14 p = .002, and in Colombia, ß = .09 p = .128. The interactions arose from stronger associations between CU traits and later aggression in those already aggressive. Our findings with preschoolers replicated across culturally diverse settings imply a major role for CU traits in the maintenance and amplification of already established aggression, and cast doubt on their contribution to its origins.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Articular cartilage (AC) is always affected in any joint with osteoarthritis. Ultrasound can be a useful tool in monitoring changes in the AC. The purpose of the present study is to ultrasound measure the thickness of the AC in the distal femur in young students and determine its relationship with body mass index (BMI), muscle mass, body fat and sports practice. MATERIALS AND METHODS: An observational cross-sectional study was conducted with healthy volunteers, between 15 and 25 years old. Anthropometric data were collected and the thickness of the femoral cartilage of the knee was measured at 5 points. In addition, the percentage of muscle and body fat was measured in a subgroup. RESULTS: 100 subjects were included in the study. The average age was 20 years (± 2.5). The average BMI was 23 kg/m2 (± 3.1). AC was thicker in men and sportsmen, versus women and sedentary people, with a statistically significant difference. When comparing BMI with AC thickness no significant relationship was found; however, only 2 participants had BMI > 30. CONCLUSIONS: Cartilage thickness has a direct relationship with the percentage of muscle, and inversely with the percentage of fat. BMI is not a good parameter when evaluating the dynamic behaviour of cartilage in non-obese youths

Objective. To perform a systematic review analysing the relationship between physical activity and modifiable cardiovascular risk factors in elderly people. Materials and methods. We conducted a search of PubMed, ScienceDirect, EBSCO, Annual Reviews, and Medline, as well as organisations such as the American College of Sport and Medicine, to include all studies published on the topic from 2008 to 2014. Results. Forty-seven studies were analysed. Most studies proposed protocols for moderate to vigorous intensity exercise, with a frequency of between 2 and 5 times per week and a duration per session of 150 to 300 min, to achieve positive changes on modifiable cardiovascular risk factors. Conclusion. Both anaerobic and aerobic exercise have significant benefits on control of cardiovascular risk factors and should be included in physical activity programmes for elderly people (AU)
